Re: do you call MIL 'mom'

I don't and I won't, especially since my mom passed away. I don't feel comfortable doing it. DH called my parents mom and dad. He loves it (but he loves my family more than his LOL).

Re: do you call MIL 'mom'

Hell to the no! I just started calling her by her first name and that's as uncomfortable as I'm going to get! 'Mom' is a word of respect and there is a lot I do not respect or look up to about my MIL. One thing being that I tell her over and over again that we're not having children so yesterday she mentioned it 5 TIMES!!!!!

Re: do you call MIL 'mom'

After reading all the responses thus far it looks like I am going to have to call her by her first name. I know myself and I KNOW I am going to sound sooooooo awkward doing it.....I was raised in a pretty conservative household and I never called adults by their first names.

BIL's wife calls her 'Mar' (her name is Mary) but I was told I can't COPYCAT?!?! WTFFFFFFFFF?!?!?!? She told me I have to come up with my own thing. She's not warm or funny so I can't come up with something goofy like I'm inclined to.

I think I'm just gonna have to act like the 30 year old grown up that I am and call her MARY.

Re: do you call MIL 'mom'

actually ive never called her anything at all...a little background, she speaks basically no english, so weve never really had a conversation so its not like a huge thing and i hardly see her but i guess i would call her by her first name...only thing is she has a nickname but if ive never even said her real name, i would feel awkward calling out her nickname all of a sudden. idunno, its a weird situation but no, would never call her mom

Why not call her 'RY'? If SIL calls her 'Mar' then you can get the second half of the name!

Re: do you call MIL 'mom'

OK, so DH's mom died a few years ago, so obviously I don't call her anything (that sounds incredibly morbid, but you know what I mean).

However, I have this problem with my FIL. I adore him to pieces, and I -want- to call him dad (and he wants me to call him dad)...but I still get weirded out by it. I am now to the point where I can write it in e-mails/cards to him, but I still call him by his first name when I am talking to him. I'll get there one day!

Re: do you call MIL 'mom'

My MIL passed away before I met DH but I don't call his father 'Dad'...I just use his first name.

I think it's a bit old fashioned (not saying anything wrong with it- just saying it's old fashioned) to call inlaws Mom and Dad. I don't really know of anyone who does that anymore.

Re: do you call MIL 'mom'

Yes. I love it! I call her either Mom, Mami, or Suegra. I call FIL Dad or Suegro.
BIL calls them Suegra and Suegro. That's what is typical in their culture.
DH calls my parents mom and dad.
