hare r u handling BIG purchases?

hi there ladies-
Since we went to closing on our home about 3 weeks b4 the wedding...we had a bit of expenses this year.
We already had a new bedrm set and dining rm set...purchased a year prior to our wedding. Mission style- quarter sawn oak- beautiful solid furniture.

Phyl-
I think that sounds fairly reasonable. We bought leather furniture about 5 years ago = sofa/loveseat and oversized chair for close to $3000. I know the kind you are talking about and that is more expensive than what we got.
I dont know if you live near Patchogue, but we bought our furniture at a place called 'affordable leather gallery', and the prices were great. I dont even know if they are still around, but it is worth a phone call.

$$ and babies

Me too! I'm a big penny pincher but know that there IS value in the stuff you're buying. Our cute little couches from IKEA won't be here 20 years later like the furniture my parents had. Sounds like the couch you're looking at will. As I said before, if you've got the cash and can do it, go for it. If not, keep those folding chairs just a wee bit longer :o)

RE: babies. We'll, is it 'wouldn't it be neat if' talk or 'I think we should start trying' talk. IF its speculative, then try to keep that in perspective.

With all the cash flying out the door, I was hyperventilating from time to time. We paid for our wedding and honeymoon, bought a volvo and new furniture. We didn't buy a house and will be in our apartment for a while (want to save up for more than a 20% downpayment so we can support our mortgage on one salary), but I do understand what you're experiencing. It can be very uncomfortable to spend all that money so quickly. Its a whirlwind.

For cashflow purposes, we bought our new furniture from IKEA (we've become assembly experts!). Much less expensive than what you're looking at, but b/c it was for only our apartment (and all we wanted to spend at this point) we went for it. Realizing that when we do buy a house, it will all become good furniture for family rooms and guest areas.

start up purchases?

that is a VERY good way to think of it. Again, I am the penny pincher and it isn't a barain if you can't afford it or really dont need it. But this is the better material ...and better constructed so it costs more...and lasts longer (I hope),
It is just that Rob has been talking about kids lately and I cant imagine managing that right now.
I think that would be ok

yep- we have talked about it..way b4 he even popped the big question. I felt that we needed time as Mr & MRS b4 mom and dad...maybe 2 years. he accepted that. But i dont think he realizes HOW different our life will be after kids. Bascially, without sounding mean, we will be giving up/redirecting ...our lives completely.
I had both my parents die within 1-1/2 years of each other when I was 21..and then had to live with and deal with a younger bro who still acts like he is 16 and has no reponsibility. So, I really had to grow up fast..and now want to enjoy the fact that I have a GREAT guy, a nice house, a pain in the butt job, and great in laws.
so I want to be the kid for a while- I guess u could say.

If his casual comments are stressing you, then you should ask him to stop. Or just reinforce your previously agreed 2 years...its OK to dream and wish together....so long that's all that's going on (read: not subtle nudging...you know what I mean, right?)

My mom died when I was 5. With dad working 2 jobs to support us, I grew up really fast too. And in the past few years, my dad has been in and out of hospitals from here to Boston for hear disease issues. Like you, this is the first time life is calm, and I'm also enjoying the peace...and not ready to make the huge personal sacrifice a child would require. One day, yes. Not Today.
