how do u pay for vacations?

dh and i split the bills this way:

dh
car
car insurance

me
electric
cable/phone/internet
homeowners ins

mortgage - split in 1/2

- groceries or things for our home, we dont split, whoever is otu buying that day just pays

we also contribute to a savings acct & checking acct (checking acct is used to pay mortgage)

well we are now planning a vacation to greece
so how do we pay for that? silly question.. but i'm just wondering how other couples work that out?

For all our vacations, even before getting married, we split the airfare and hotel evenly. DH pays for everything else, like dinners, excursions, etc.

ETA: Just wanted to add....

We pay our own bills, like credit cards, car payments, etc. DH works for Cable so we get that for 'free' he pays small amount for I think the boxes, or something like that.

We have a family plan for our cell phones, so we each pay our own portion.

We live in an apartment within his grandmother's house, so DH pays the rent and give his grandmother some money per month to cover any misc costs, but she doesn't charge us for electric or anything like that. Food we split down the middle.

As far as vacations go, since I am the one who insisted we go on vacation this year, I am paying.
After our wonderful Hawaii honeymoon last year (that cost DH a pretty penny) we where going to skip a vacation this year but I really really need one. In the future we are going to have a vacation fund which we will both contribute to.

We split the major costs (hotel, airfare, excursion-type things) 50/50. We have separate checking accounts. We book on one debit card just to keep it easy (ie., why bother booking air travel on two separate cards - so much easier to have it all on one IMO). Then whoever's card was used gets reimbursed by the other person. Does that make sense?

When it comes to costs on the trip though - meals, shows, that kinda stuff - we both pay. We don't pay too much attention to who pays for everything though, to be honest. Sometimes he does, sometimes I do. That's how we are when we're home and go out to restaurants and bars, so it's kinda the same when we travel.

DH:
Electric

Groceries are usually half and half, depending on who gets their CC out first.

But then DH puts some of his salary every two weeks into our joint savings, and I take out of that to pay off my CC bills and help with the mortgage. On paper it looks like I pay more bills, which technically I do, but it all works out because I don't put ANY money into our savings. And when I'm running low to pay off the bills, I take from the money that DH has put in from his salary. This is the same for vacations. One of us will just put it on a CC and it ultimately gets paid off, lol.

We both transfered our paychecks into 1 account.
I'm in charge of all the bills and putting $ into savings.

I enjoy it actually lol. Keeps me nice and organized since I'm a control freak about $.

Jerry pays all the household bills

I pay for my Credit Cards, Cell Phone, Car Payment and insurance

Food shopping - 1 week I pay next week he pays and if we need anything during the week whoever goes will pay.

Vacation comes out of our wedding account that we still put money into on a weekly basis.

Before we got married, we split hotel and airfare 50/50 and then while on vacation we took turns paying for meals and other activities.

Our honeymoon came out of our wedding account, so that was just our joint savings - plus it was all inclusive, and we didn't pay for too much more while we were there.

We just went to Hawaii 2 weeks ago and we paid for that using our end of year (2010) bonuses. We are both lucky in that we get large enough bonuses to be able to spend on vacation, while still putting 75% of it into savings. His bonus is about 3X bigger than mine, so he paid for the actual trip, and I paid for the expenses while we were there.

We're planning on going to Italy for our 1 year anniversary in September, and I'm not sure how we'll pay for that yet! But since he makes a considerable amount more than I do, the spending usually comes to 75%/25%, him to me.

we do this too - we have everything in one account and I pay all the bills.

If we go on vaca, we usually put the airfare/hotel on a cc to get points (and I always heard to not put hotels on your debit card) and then pay it off when the bill comes up.

well we are heading to greece, and he paid the airfare. which is alot. but i recently paid for our trip to disney, so it evens out

i think if you keep taking turns, it just evens itself out

or like if he pays for the trip, you pay all the spending money when you are there

Dh has always paid for all our vacations.

And we split rent 60/40 (I obviously pay 40%)

and then the bills we split also. I pay gas and electric and he pays for cable, phone, car insurance, etc.

Same here.. we had one account from the time DH moved in with me... (about 2 years before we were married).

grocery
all my personal crap

to be honest, we just havent gotten there yet! its crazy but true. next year will be a year, and we havent had time to do the whole bank/cc change things. we just started calling cc companies to change it to our new address!!

the goal is to join the account, but until then we had to figure out who was responsible for what so it works

im hoping to take care of this in april when i have some days off of work

DH and I are planning on doing this once he gets a full time job (hopefully soon )

We have a joint checking account and we each have a credit card that we use solely for the 'joint bills.' So a vacation would go on the joint credit card and it would get paid for from the joint checking account.
