i have a question about PCOS

how did you know you had it? did you have a feeling you might have pcos and ask your gyno to get tested for it, or did your gyno just figure it out with a regular checkup?

Re: i have a question about PCOS

I have very irregular periods. I havent had my period since Oct. I also noticed that my cheeks were very rosey in color and previously had never been. I went to the doctor who did a few blood work. I had an abnormal level of a hormone and referred me to an RE. The RE did more blood work and a few sonos and gave me the DX. I'm in tough position though because she wanted me to us glucophage but I couldnt because I have IBS.

Re: i have a question about PCOS

My period was also VERY irregular. I would go 2-3 months without getting it.
My gyno did blood work and referred me to a reproductive endocrinologist where I had even more bloodwork done. She determied I had PCOS.

Re: i have a question about PCOS

I was on bcp for about 8 years, then decided one day I would stop. Basically my period stopped coming. The 1st month after I got it, but then it took 3 months to get the next one, then 7 months to get the one after that. Took pregnancy tests that were neg so I went to the gyno and they tested my hormones through blood work and said I have it.

I already know I have to take fertility drugs to get pregnant since my body doesn't make enough estrogen which kinda sucks, but they say it's fairly common and alot of girls still get pregnant with it. The headaches and hot flashes are horrible though

Re: i have a question about PCOS

My period was also VERY irregular.I could go 6 months without it. I had an internal sonogram and you can see the small cysts in the ovaries.

Re: i have a question about PCOS

I dont know if you can diagnose PCOS while on BCP. I got off of it in july and didnt get AF. In September, I went to the gyn and she saw the cysts in my ovaries. Blood tests confirmed it. Now Im on Metformin and will be going for fertility treatment when I TTC. I was on BCP for 8 years so I never knew.

Re: i have a question about PCOS

I have always had irregular periods.

I went to an endocrinologist, and had blood tests done to show an insulin imbalance (insulin levels too high) as well as hormone testing.

Re: i have a question about PCOS

Its amazing how common PCOS is. I have PCOS and it was only diagnosed after bloodwork. Then my gyno did an internal sonogram and confirmed I had small cysts. My hormone level has always been inbalanced so that was a key factor in determining that we needed to test for it.

Re: i have a question about PCOS

I don't have it but I believe some telltale signs are heavy bleeding, severe cramping and irregular periods.

crashing, sorry, but if you are on BP, they can't test you for PCOS because the BP controls the PCOS. You would have to go off BP to have the correct blood work done. However, they can still do several types of sonograms to confirm and monitor your situation.

Re: i have a question about PCOS

Crashing...

I got diagnosed through blood work, but before it was confirmed, was asked to visit an endocronologist. They're the ones that monitored it for a few years until I went on birth control, now it's under control for the most part and I visit my gyno to get check-ups.

I ended up gaining about 20 pounds in 1 month and my period basically went away for a good 3-4 times in a month.

Re: i have a question about PCOS

i can't believe that PCOS is so common now-a-days!
I'm so glad that they have made so much progress in regards to helping women with this problem when it comes time for them to TTC

Does anyone know what other fertility drugs or methods besides Clomid that they use?

Re: i have a question about PCOS

I would only get my period like 2 times a year. Went on Birth Control at 15 or 16 years old.

there are tons of different drugs that you can take. Your RE will tell you what's best for your situation.
Im currently taking something to control the sypmtoms of pcos, then I'm going to take like 3 (or more?) other meds to stimulate ovulation and tons of other stuff. cant wait!!

I know tons of girls who got pregnant naturally with pcos, its different for everyone.
