i saw a miracle today with my own eyes

i was at columbia university medical center and a doctor was giving me a walk through of the neuro-intensive care unit....he was giving me little snippets about each patient's case....

so we're a the door of a man's room...he had been in a coma for a week. well, we're standing there and the doctor is speaking and out of the blue the man 'self-extubated' aka ripped his ventilator tube out and woke up!!!! CRAZY!!! Within a few seconds I was pushed out of the way by the medical staff but it was amazing to witness...

have faith!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: i saw a miracle today with my own eyes

I worked vents for 3 years...how long after that until they put the tube back in before the patient turned blue or stopped breathing. Sorry, not to be a downer, but when a person is intubated, their first reaction when they wake up is usually to pull the tube out (b/c its a foreign body) even if they life depends on it. On the bright side, the patient waking up may be a good indication that he may be ready to be weaned off the vent.

wow. well, i still consider it a miracle that he woke up from a coma. guess it doesn't sound so good for him afterall though...
