i completely understadn ... but i'd be more upset with her parents .... they're the ones who are enabling her to be like that .... she doesn't know any better.sorry you're annoyed!

Re: this may sound mean....but has anyone else ever felt this way
I don't think it's wrong at all. I get annoyed with kids too, I think we all do. Kids are people too, and there's no reason why they should be any different from an annoying relative. However, I do think that even though you may need some space from her, you should try and help her, maybe make her cooler!

yes. sometimes kids are brats themselves, with or without their parents help!its totally fine!! as long as you don't pull her hair or anything you're good to go!

Re: this may sound mean....but has anyone else ever felt this way
I'm sorry, I don't mean to laugh but I know how you feel. My cousin is 8. She was a FG in my wedding. From like age 2, I've always been the bees knees in her eyes. Coming to sleep over my house was like the height of her existence. Now she's 8 and I'm boring and she cops this little attitude and it royally p!sses me off!ETA: And I know, my aunt is too blame but she's got it hard, too. She's a single mom on disability living alllll the way out on LI with no friends or family in the immediate area. She treats her kid too much like her friend.

Understandable to be annoyed but not understanding why the kid has the choice here. Teaching the child to be independent is great and all but kids have to follow some schedules that the parents put in place for them.

havent resorted to any hair pulling. just enforce handholding when walking in crowded streets.
i think maybe she just needs more structure. like she did hold my hand cuz i told her she had to......but if i gave her a choice, heck no!
its hard when you see someone you love and you don't agree with all the decisions being made, but it also seems like you know not to overstep and i think in your time with her you have every right to enforce structure and boundaries and even say to her 'i really don't appreciate the way you're speaking right now' type thing. and hopefully its something she can grow out of or something that will calm down as things settle at home?

IDK- at 6.5 years old- I blame the parents. At that age I think they only do what they know they can get away with. The parents really need to do something about it.I love my neice and nephew but when they start to get bratty I cant stand being around them

Pretty much same way you do! I just try and not give her a choice. Letting them be independant is a far cry from letting them do whatever the hell they want! I'm sorry, but she's a kid, she doesn't KNOW what's best for her. I really just try and give her the look like 'Ummm, I'm not your mom and I'm not playing your games so hold my hand or you can forget whatever fun thing I had planned for you tonight.' Ultimatums usually seem to work.

lauren - i dont really know the answer and ihave the same frustration....i think the mom wants her to feel like her opinion and thoughts are valued and she is independent. yadda yadda
idk, to me, we made a committment. so i wouldnt really give the choice unless there was a REAL need to cancel plans
but basically it was: do you want to see XX or see YY this wknd? wth
Opinions and thoughts are great for questions like 'what would you like for dinner?' and 'what movie do you want to watch?'. How do you make plans with someone and then cancel for no valid reason? You blocked out the time of your schedule and now you don't get what you want cause of a child? Would really bother me.
I can take my posts down later if you want - just let me know.

This is another HUGE thing for me. My FG is obsessed with vampires, zombies, gore, etc. Like I said, my aunt treats her more like a friend than her kid so they watch shows Resident Evil and 1,000 ways to Die. Incredibly inappropriate for an 8 y/o but my aunt always just claims awww she's tough. And she is, she doesn't have nightmares or anything, but she's a kid, couldn't you just let her hold onto that youthful innocence a little bit longer?? But then again, I'm NOT a parent, let alone a single parent with all the issues my poor aunt has so I feel like it's not my place to say. All I can control is what she does around me and I definitely won't be watching Resident Evil with her anytime soon.
