Re: this may sound mean....but has anyone else ever felt this way

I anticipate i might have a similar issue with my little niece (not yet though!). I totally hear you though- i have some brats that ive encountered in the past. the good thing is that since you are so close to her (even though you might not see her every week) she will always respect you as long as you encourage her. if she's strong, you have to be stronger!! i know kids who act differently around certain adults because they treat them differently.

without knowing the whole story it sounds like her recent actions might be a reaction to her parents' issues.

dude - my niece used to refer to police officers as 'bad boys' b/c she was watching the show COPS from the time she was 2!

How can they let them watch this stuff?! Recently on 1,000 ways to die, a guy died from a snake bite to his d!ck! Are you kidding me?!

Yeah, the show is horrible. They do these ridiculous dramatizations of like off the wall crazy scenarios. I'm embarassed that my aunt even watches it let alone let's her kid watch it!

Re: this may sound mean....but has anyone else ever felt this way

Kids are little people in training.

I'm not joking -- if I were you, I'd just talk to the kid.

Let's say her name is Sarah...

'Sarah, why did you decide you didn't want to hang out with me? It kind of hurt my feelings -- I set time aside to go do something with you.'

Someone here is going to disagree with me but... I don't care.

Kids need to learn eventually that what they do and what they say doesn't just vanish into thin air. It affects people.

She'd be sad if you bailed on her, right? Let her see that it goes both ways.

I really try to give kids the opportunity to act like good little people. But they are going to mess up. But if no one tells them that what they are doing/how they are acting is wrong -- how are they going to know?

I mean adjust this conversation to fit what she's like or you're like etc... but, you know.

Don't like guilt trip the kid but let her know you were bummed.

Re: this may sound mean....but has anyone else ever felt this way

becki - i had this convo when she first told me that she was going to see YY instead. i was like what? we had plans.....

then she just tried to rationalize with YY misses her and doesnt get to see her (umm, neither do i)....and she just went into her own little child logic. so i was like, well im sad.....

then the mom gave her the choice and that was that.

whatever. im over it. which is what i was afraid sounded mean, but i am kinda over it.

eta: thanks for the feedback tho. appreciate the words.
