Last year was my first full year of teaching resource room in the elementary school. I love the book 'The First Days of School' by Harry Wong,,,he has great classroom management strategies for all students of all ages! Also,,,OVER-PLAN!! You never know when an administrator will pop up to observe you! Studies have shown that students do better in class when they know some personal info about you, for example,,,,where you graduated high school, your first car,,things like that----just don't get too personal--you need to still have authority over them!! And finally,,,make sure that you use the students interests to motivate lessons,,for example if the shyest kid in the class loves spiders,,then do a lesson on spiders,,,things like that!! These are just some of the major things that I have done to make my first year run fairly smooth!!!!
This is really good too, Harry Wong's ideas are all over the web - he has some really great advice. Def let them know some stuff about you, so they know you are human but not too much!

Re: Ant 1st year teachers or veterans?
I teach middle school social studies, and while it is important to be strict and stick to your guns, I do not agree with the not smiling the first day of school, just be yourself. I find if you have respect for the kids they will in turn treat you with repsect. I kill them with kindness and never had a discipline issue I couldn't handle on my own; do not be a pushover....when I discipline they know I mean business. You also must be able to draw a line, sometimes kids like to tell you EVERYTHING, don't let them...you aren't their friend, you are their teacher, however, that doesn't mean you can't be friendly! Also, being SUPER SUPER SUPER organized is the key to sucess and the a way to relieve the stress that you will already be feeling. I acutally really enjoyed my first year of teaching and didn't find it to be too horrible! If you are confident, organized and personable, you will do fine and go far. Don't worry too much!!

How ironic but one of my good friends is also going into her 1st year teaching HS special ed!!!Where will you be teaching? Maybe i can try to hook you two up to be like support system for each other?
My advice as a 2nd year 4th grade teacher is - Act like you know what you are doing!!!!
Even if you are thrown for a huge loop, always keep your cool and act in charge.
Angelina Jolie's got nothing on me when im teaching- I'm Lara Croft with chalk!!!

Last year was my first full year and everyone has their own little words of advice to give you. My advice is to stick to what feels right to you. What works in one classroom probably won't work in another classroom. Get to know your kids - oh and the most important thing is keep records of EVERYTHING!!!

very true...good advice
you will find that a lot of teachers in your school will give you advice - some of it you asked for, some of it you didn't.
Be polite and smile, but in the end, do what is best for you and your kids!

I am starting my fourth year of teaching. I am a special eduaction teacher in a kindergarten inclusion class. I loved this book and it really helped me out.
Also, the best advise I have ever received was 'Fail to plan, plan to fail.' I have found that this is so true. You have to be organized and ALWAYS have a plan of what needs to be done in advance.
Congratulations and good luck

PLEASE learn as much as you can about autism and behavior - I am an autism consultant and too many teachers really don't know much about how to work with these guys - plus undersanding the function of behavior, and knowing how to use motivation and reinfocement systems... FM me for any info or questions - I have TONS and TONS of websites and resources! As a sped teacher you will definitely have students on all areas of the autism spectrum in your class.....
