Re: Anyone buy a house yet?
We just bought a house on an acre of land for $250,000 in Pennsylvania, a fixer upper. We want to build equity and then we can move back to NY if we want.

Re: Anyone buy a house yet?
If all goes according to plan...and we know how that is... we'll get a house right before we get married. The prices are CRAZY right now.

Re: Anyone buy a house yet?
FI bought our house Sept 2003, wow, it's that long already? We rent the upstairs and get good rent for it, so he pays less than $1000 towards the mortgage. Some days I feel like they will have to live up there foreve so we can make the mortgage, but I want to change jobs after the wedding.FI even mentioned moving to places like NC or somewhere else, so we don't have to live in these ridiculously priced neighborhoods........I'm still thinking about it, because while the houses are cheaper, so's your paycheck most of the time.

My tip.... move to North Carolina like us, so you can have a big brand new beautiful home for the same amount that you will pay for a 'shack type fixer upper'... wow I sound like Debbie Downer! hA!!
I know I REALLY tried to convince FI to move, but he's taking the New York Bar in a few months and once he's certified here theres no way hes going to want to leave....Looks like I'll be stuck in the shacks of LI :)
PS I love Debbie Downer , she cracks me up
I don't know, my brother is getting out of law school this month and has a job paying $175,000 a year...Even paying back his loans, he will still be saving about $100,000 a year, after renting an apt. in midtown. That wouldn't take too long to get a big chunk of change for a downpayment. I had saved from my first 4 years of working, so even though I paid for the wedding, we still had 25% to put down on our condo. Unfortunately I don't make as much as my brother.

Re: Anyone buy a house yet?
i bought a condo in chicago three years ago. fh bought a house with his parents and brother...he got out of their mortgage and has been living with me---
it's a 'small box' of a 1 bedroom condo, but i was sick of giving money to a landlord. there are lots of programs to assist with first-time home buyers and your mortgage company can advise. i only had to put down 3% to get my condo. i figure i'll refinance later or rent the condo out when i decide to buy a house.
don't worry, it can be done!

Re: Anyone buy a house yet?
We bought our house back in September. It has made things very tight for the wedding, but it's totally worth it!I grew up in Commack and he is a town over in East Northport. The house is also in Commack- we really wanted to stay in Western Suffolk or Nassau and narrowed it down to school districts.

Re: Anyone buy a house yet?
my fiance and i bought a house together two years ago in april. we had to tear it down because of how bad it is and it is still not done. even though i thought for sure it would be ready before the wedding. kind of a bummer but now it is the house we always wanted. we only put 5% down on it and they wrote off the PMI as a courtesy 10 months later because of the equity we built up by rebuilding the house. It is possible to live on Long Island. It just takes some time and patience. But I think I am running out of patience after paying for a house for 2 years that i don't live in.

We just bought a house in Long Beach. The closing is set for June. I can't wait. I've lived in Brooklyn my whole life and are now heading for Nassau county.

Re: Anyone buy a house yet?
We live together in rented apt in NYC. Our lease is up in Feb '06. We'll probably stay there until then, and then we (or should I say I) would like to buy a co-op in Forest Hills. I don't think I am ready for a whole house yet and we are all for the short commute!FI loves our tiny apt. He''s lived here for 6 years. It's too small and I want to get out asap even if it means leaving the city.
I can't find any decent two bedroom apts in NYC to buy for under $650k!

Re: Anyone buy a house yet?
we plan on either buying a house in the Ronkonkoma/Holbrook area...or buying a co-op or condo.we're definitley buying something..just have to see how much we can save between now and then.
we're also paying for our own wedding, and a house. we're probably going to save as much $ as we can to put down on a house, borrow money to pay the wedding-and then pay it right back afterward(with our wedding gifts)
You don't really need to save 60K to buy a house nowadays. you just have to get pre-approved, and be able to pay a 2K+ mortgage a month! piece of cake right?
seriously, it's do-able. FH and I both make good salaries, he just opened his own business so it's a little tight now. But, I have confidence that it'll be great.

Re: Anyone buy a house yet?
We both lived at home before we got married! We closed on our house 2 weeks before our wedding!
I thought about moving out of state but I recently lost my mom and it made me realize how important it is to be close to family! I dont think I could ever move away now!

Re: Anyone buy a house yet?
We are buying my childhood home (I grew up in Nassau)! So exciting and crazy at the same time, because we are paying for the wedding ourselves and soon we'll have to pay mortgage.. I am going to miss eating 3 meals a day...
ETA: Kelly, I am so sorry to hear about your mom!
