Re: Buying each other shoes- are you superstitious?

I think the whole shoes on the table or bed thing means when you first buy them and they are in the box? dont put the box on a table or your bed?

I think superstitions vary by culture and what may be good luck for one is bad luck for another.

My parents gave me my pearl strand and matching earrings. Best friend gave us all (Bridesmaids) pearl earrings for her wedding. FH gave me pearl earrings. I believe they are all good things

Actually according to the superstition that I grew up with, it's accepting pearls from a MAN that is a no-no!

this one was huge for my grandfather. I believe it has something to do with the fact that when you die, the funeral director (or whoever) puts your shoes on the table while he/she's dressing you. Or something to that effect.

Re: Buying each other shoes- are you superstitious?

here is some info on the bad luck with shoes superstitions

Shoes placed on a table are thought to be a bad omen and either a quarrel in the house, or a storm of thunder and lightening will come. Leaving shoes in the shape of the cross is also considered bad luck. To break break the run another person must pick the shoes up. Another common belief concerns beetles and shoes. It is bad luck if a beetle crawls out of your shoe and when a beetle crawls over your shoe it foretells death. Placing your left foot on the ground first thing in the morning is a bad omen. It is unlucky to put the left shoe on first. Dressing the left foot first is bad luck with one exception and that is dressing the left foot unintentionally on a Friday morning, otherwise you are sure to have a quarrel. Walking around with one shoe on and the other off will bring bad luck for a year. Putting shoes on the wrong feet will foretell and accident to the feet. Never place shoes higher than your head or keep shoes under the bed for both are bad luck. Slippers and shoes should never be put on the bed for the same reason. Tying shoes together and hanging them on a nail is bad luck. Shoes as a gift on Christmas Day is considered bad luck. Actors never place shoes on a chair in the dressing room because it is considered bad luck.

Re: Buying each other shoes- are you superstitious?

I do not believe in any of these, but one of my best GF drives me crazy with them

Don't open the umbrella in the house

Don't let anyone sweep your feet

Don't put your pocketbook on the ground

Don't give an empty purse as a gift

Don't sweep out your home at night

Don't sleep naked

Don't buy a mate a watch

And I have definitely heard the don't buy shoes for your mate one

I think they are just things passed around from generation to generation.

Re: Buying each other shoes- are you superstitious?

I've never heard of 'don't buy shoes for your mate'. DH always buys me shoes!

DH is a shoe designer so he always has shoes on the table. I'm not that superstitious however I won't walk under a ladder or vacuum/sweep when a family member is flying. Otherwise those are about the only ones I follow.

Re: Buying each other shoes- are you superstitious?

most of these are just practical things that someone turned into a superstition.

dont open a umbrella inside - duh you'll get stuck when you try to get out of the door

putting pocketbook on ground - someone will steal it!

shoes in shape of cross - someone will trip on 'em!

dont sleep naked - if there's a fire and u have to run out, you're gunna be pretty embarassed

dont buy your hubby shoes - u shouldnt buy anyone shoes! you dont know their exact size/comfort level.

all of these just make me laugh

Re: Buying each other shoes- are you superstitious?

I'm with you Shamma...I don't believe in any superstitions...

the only thing I do get nervous about is if someone mentions that there is no traffic...when there should be... but I call that more of a jinx....

I get stuck on superstitions until I learn where they come from and then I get over it, so this helps a lot!

Re: Buying each other shoes- are you superstitious?

Shoes aren't the only thing not to give

I found this

Do not give your partners the following items as gifts:

Shoes - Encourages them to walk out of the relationship

Perfumes - Attracts a third party that can break up the relationship

Bags - Encourages them to pack and leave the relationship

Hi.

I am the most superstitious person alive.

Well one thing I have always been told is 'Never buy a man shoes because he will either walk out of your life or walk all over you' I think it is the same vice versa?

Have you heard of this, do you believe in it?
My co worker just told me that her boyfriend bought her shoes for her birthday, I held my tongue and did not say anything, but you know what I was thinking.

What are your thoughts????

That's funny...I have never heard that before....

LMAO

The only one that I heard of is 'don't put your purse on the floor' bc it has something to do with not having any money. Go figure!
