I am definitely hyphenating.... Not a big fan of old school traditions like that. I especially don't enjoy the Mrs. John Doe title .I feel like we've come too far for that girls!

While I am not hyphenating my name, I agree on the Mrs. (His name). When they anncounce us at the wedding I plan being announced 'Stefan and Krista (His last name). I HATE when people say 'Mrs. (his last name)'. I plan on changing my last name. Some of my co-workers use their maiden name for work, but I think it'll be too confusing with paperwork and HR related things.

I didn't think my last name could become more ethnically identifiable than it already was but it has. But now that I am a newlywed, I enjoy hearing my students (and anyone else who knows my new last name) calling me by my new last name. There was never a question that I wouldn't change it. I wish to have consistency when identifying all of my immediate family members now and in the future.

I had an argument with DH's aunt who implied that taking a man's last name is an archaic practice. I told her that my maiden name is not what identifies me as a woman or a human being or even a wife and a mother in the future. It is the past and continuing love and nurturing of my family that identifies who I am in my heart and my soul. A name, IMO is a collection of letters - a symbol if you will.

My father, if alive today would agree that a man's legacy is not in his name, but in the actions and behaviors of those he left behind. I am not less of a legacy to him than my brother just because our last names are no longer the same. We are equal and if we raise our children with as much love and respect as our parents raised us, then that would be the true test of my Dad's (and Mom's)legacy.

This is very beautiful, and true, Leslie.

Re: changing your last name?

Professionally I'm keeping my last name b/c it is waaaaay too much of a hassle to change it. For everything else my current intent is to change it. We'll see how I feel when October gets here. FH doesn't care one way or the other.

Re: changing your last name?

I don't want to lose my ID either - I have two professional degrees and my professional license with my maiden name. I just don't feel like changing everything when everyone knows me by my maiden name.

However, I do want to share the same name with my hubby and my future children. So i will either hyphenate or use three names with no hyphen.

Re: changing your last name?

I am not changing mine. However, I have nothing against the decision to do so; I think its a very personal decision. For me, my name is my identity. I love my fiance, but I don't have to change my name to join my life with him. So, I am keeping mine.

Re: changing your last name?

I am absolutley not changing my name. It's an outdated, archaic, patriarchal tradition. There's no need.

what you said makes sense. i think i am just having a hard time with the whole process of changing my name.
it is a hard thing to come to grips with. i have had this whole name for my life. my friends call me 'lemon' b/c in 2nd grade i couldnt spell my last name and could barely pronouce it, so my teacher gave me this nickname. i hated it, but now i love it.

changing it is like a change to my identity, so i am having a bit of a problem and i want to keep it.

Re: changing your last name?

Hmmm.. This has been an ongoing topic for years..I really want to keep my maiden name. We were actually discussing about possibly combining our two last names..but I don't know. I might just hyphenate it or keep my maiden name for work, and take his name at home? i still have not decided.
