food at Jericho Terrace

Hello. We are finally starting to narrow down our choices for a wedding reception. I am a teacher and would like to get married after school ends in June, 2001. Yes, we know this is "prime time" but cannot imagine dealing with the intense heat that is typical of July or August. Anyway, we really like the people at Jericho Terrace. They have worked with us so far concerning designing a menu to suite both my American-Italian side and my fiance's Indian side. We would be able to cater in the Indian food and they would take care of the Italian/Continental menu that is offerred there. The thing is, I have not been to a wedding there and was wondering how the food is. This is a major factor holding us back at this point. We figure every reception hall we've looked at so far is in the same price range. We are concerned about the food being of good quality and taste. Also dealing with professional manager and waitstaff is important to us. Any recent experiences, both positive and negative that you care to share with us is much appreciated! Thanks, Jeannine

Wow, Susan that's a strong opinion to have about a vendor, especially a vendor that did not even do your wedding flowers. Are you in the floral business? I was just asking because I saw you posted several messages regarding other florists and also had negative comments. When it comes to these two vendors, there are mixed reviews. Although I must admit I definetly wanted someone who has experience with wedding floral arrangements (not a kid) and someone who I can trust enough where I can relax and enjoy the night before my wedding with my fiance and families, and not go and check my flowers. I must say that after reading about everyones experiences, that I will be very careful who I hire to do our flowers. And in case we happen to come across problems like you've stated, I will have it in writing. :)

Today we pause to reflect upon those who have shaped our character, molded our spirits and touched our hearts. May the lighting of this candle be a reminder of the memories we have shared, a representation of the everlasting impact you have made upon our lives.

hi jeannine, yes, i fortunately have a bid of info that i hope will help you.......my friends wedding at jericho terrace was horrible......the staff was a bunch of kids...with one or two older ladies....mostly kids...therefore unprofessional......everyone was complaining that most of the food was loaded with sauces....but no substance.....just gravy and sauce....she even had a taste test...but what came out for her wedding wasn't the same quality.....not at all!!!!!people unfortunately were talking......not good.....when people were returning the veal that was chewy....and NOT tender....the waitress said try something else...'cause its all the same!!!!!!also the owner came over to YELL at one of the ushers that was standing...just standing near the piano as he was talking to his girlfriend.....very very unprofessional.....their very obvious ethnic approach has increased to a "tough boy" attitude....its a shame that it has because it can be a nice place but the owners tough approach kills that special moment that we all want.....if i wanted that treatment i would go to the el caribe or russo's......what happened to treating people nicely and delivering the kind of food that you promise people.....

I got a price quote fron James Cress that was simply outrageous! He wouldn't even meet with us personally, we met with an assistant. My Aunt only uses him exclusively. I have to say some of his pieces(that I have received personally) have been off like any other place :)

Today we pause to reflect upon those who have shaped our character, molded our spirits and touched our hearts. May the lighting of this candle be a reminder of the memories we have shared, a representation of the everlasting impact you have made upon our lives.

food at Jericho Terrace

Jeannine, I was at a wedding at Jericho Terrace about 3 months ago, and I must say I have a different opinion. As the MOH for my best friend, I was in charge of handling a lot of the responsibliities with Jericho Terrace b/c the bride lived in NJ and wasn't always able to be in town to take care of the little things. I worked with Joe (one of the owners) and not only was he very professional, he was very flexible with alot of of the menu choices she wanted. I was always treated as if I was the one who was getting married. As for the food and service, it was wonderful! I believe there were a few "kids" (around 20-21 yrs old) that served us in the cocktail, but they were all professional. Speaking of cocktail, it was amazing, too much food for everyone. The entrees as well were great, and for they want per person, you can't beat it. There are really too many good things to list, and honestly Barbara's message was the first negative comment I 've heard about them. Everyone that went is still raving.

We were so impressed, I booked them for my May 2001 wedding also! Good Luck.

Jeannine - I think yuor best bet is to go for a food tasting. Try to schedule that as soon as possible so you can make your decision. We were married at the Swan Club and evryone thought the food was excellent. On the other hand, I have seen postings on this board where people said they didn't like the food. The most important thing is what you and your fiance think so go for the tasting and then decide. :)

JEANNINE- I AM HAVING MY WEDDING AT JERICHO TERRACE ON JULY 9TH 2000. AFTER HEARING SUCH TERRIBLE WORDS FROM BARBARA, I WAS SO UPSET. I HAVE ONLY HEARD VERY POSITIVE THINGS ABOUT THE SERVICE AND EVERYONE RAVES ABOUT THE FOOD. I AM FROM AN ITALIAN FAMILY WHERE FOOD IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING. I TASTED SOME OF THE FOOD AND FOUND IT OUTSTANDING. I HAVE DEALT WITH JOE AND JOHN (BOTH OWNERS) AND THEY ARE ALWAYS EXTREMELY PROFESSIONAL AND POLITE. THEY WERE WILLING TO ACCOMODATE EVERY ONE OF MY WISHES, AND FELT THEY TAKE SO MUCH PRIDE IN WHAT THEY DO.

Hi. I have been to several weddings at Jericho Terrace and loved them all. I thought the food was very good and even though the wait staff was younger I did not find them unprofessional. Good Luck

Good luck, Stephanie

Thank you Caroline! We have spoken to John and Joe. I have found them both to be very accomodating, especially in this unique situation. I appreciate you writing back!

If your mother's are friendly, and you can speak to his mother openly, maybe have his mother call yours and suggest...Or even get outfits to match...

Your mom is too nice : )

I too am from an Italian family and good food is important to us. I did ask for positive and negative experiences, so I am getting what I asked for. I have found both John and Joe to be so very helpful that it upset me that this poor girl had such a bad experience. I guess I will have to "push" for a tasting and take it from there. Right now, it's my favorite place, so we'll have to see. We are planning a June 2001 wedding, so we need to book soon. Thanks for writing!

Thanks Lorraine. I hope speaking to John or Joe put your mind at ease a bit.

How did you go about asking for a tasting. I brought it up once and they said they have an excellent reputation. That wasn't the answer I was looking for and I guess I need to be a bit more insistent.

thoughts on tasting

At the Milleridge, they hold tastings in the banquet office while they are cooking for other events. That way you get to taste the real thing - not just something that was prepared to just sell you on signing the contract.

Offer to go when they have events planned - and ask to taste lots of stuff at once. You wouldn't buy a car without test driving it first to make sure it suits your needs....this is one of the biggest expenses you'll have in your newly married life. Be very critical....someone on this board suggested that you shouldn't have to taste because , if its a fine establishment - there should be no question as to the quality of the food. Just yesterday I was speaking with a very well educated professional who bought an Infinity without driving it first. Great car, right? He hated how it handled and sold it. Not all things are the same for all people....)

It is important that you be completely comfortable with your decision. If you're not - go elsewhere. There are plenty of other people out there who will cater to your needs. You shouldn't have to 'push' for anything...

Jeannine and Lorraine, heres some more postive feedback...

I almost booked Jericho Terrace for my wedding, and only didnt because I was having a winter wedding and I loved Watermill for that time of the year. If I did it in the summer I probably would have gone with Jericho Terrace. When I went there to price it out, I was impressed with all you get for your money. And the cocktail hour seems WONDERFUL! I also liked the fact that there is a room in the back (the one that looks like the wine cellar) where if your guests arrive early they can go in that room and get refreshments before the cocktail hour starts. And in case of bad weather (God forbid), there is alot of places to take pictures inside.

I spoke to Michael when I went. About the food tasting, he said that we would be able to come in on a Saturday afternoon right before a wedding and would be able to taste the food that would be served at a real wedding. He said we could bring the immediate family too (which was a good thing because I have a future family that is FULL of opinions, LOL :)). The only thing they request is that you are serious about booking the place (like if you like the food, they sort of expect you to book the day you taste the food, which I think is understandable).

thank you so much for the positive feedback!!! good luck on your wedding - the watermill is beautiful!!

My husband came to mine the last half hour. We dressed him in aprons and put him in oven mitts--that poor thing, to have 75 ladies all whistling at him. What a good guy!! LOL

Estelles is another suggestion, although they are hit-and miss.

Thanks guys for the additional positive feedback. It definetly can make you nervous when you're paying all this money for basically the food, service, and location. And to hear one bad comment, it can make you unsure. All I know is that I have complete trust in The Jericho Terrace for our wedding and to all future brides, definetly check it out. You really get alot for your money!

Also Jeannine, we wanted a June 2001 wedding (the place looks amazing in the summer w/ all the flowers,) but the day and room we wanted was booked, so we changed to May. If the tasting is holding you back, I would definetly go taste ASAP, b/c there are only 10 weekend days in June, and when we went to sign the contract in January, they were already pretty booked. Good Luck and keep us posted!

Positive note

It's nice to hear all this good stuff concerning Jericho Terrace! Like I said, we love the place and are trying to work out the complicated details of our very unique wedding. We will discuss the taste test next and hopefully have a decision made soon. In a way, it's sort of funny: the poor girl who wrote today about Villa Lombardi's for example. I went there for a wedding and had a terrific time and the visit she had was so terrible. I guess there will always be good and bad stories about every place. Good luck girls and let's keep in touch!

As far as a Sept wedding, even if that is 'technically' fall, it is usually summer-like weather so ivory is totally appropriate! Go for it! Good luck.

Keep me posted!

jeannine in giving you an opinion while not involved in this loop it seems as though you have received two positive comments from girls that are already booked at jericho terrace!!!! of course they will praise it...of course they will have nothing bad to say about it. karen is right if they are giving you a run around in saying "we have a good reputation " when you asked for a taste test...then think it over ...it may not be in your cards...ask them what their refund policy is.....but as karen said, of course jericho will be on their best behavior for a taste test just to book you....that's the name of their game..."to book you"....a places reputation is well exposed as barbara said by how an owner acts during a real wedding....same with the food and service....expose it during a real wedding.....not a practice run at a taste test...they would have to be terrible to let you down at a planned practice run....that's not a genuine way of accurately determining their capabilities....check them out with the better business bureau...they'll have reports on jericho terrace that'll give you additional info to help you decide....all i can say since you should test drive your car...(your food) and you are having these second thoughts...which is understandable....as karen said try other places....i would....especially since you are from an italian family.....there are so many good catering halls....after hearing barbaras and karens account of everything i wouldn't waste any more time there....you'll always be wondering what if...what if....you'll go crazy til your wedding day.....i would try the watermill.....or woodbury country club....they had a great showcase there on monday....caviar, eggplant, calamari, baked ziti, veal pizzaolla, etc...it was great...but don't book yet check out a few more good places....meet other banquet mgrs...let then understand your questions and worries.....o.k......i hope i've helped you....then whatever you decide...trust yourself...and let it go....good luck

By the way - I noticed you chose Full House for your band - I was also interested in them. If possible could you please forward me any info. you may have or any recommendations for other bands. Thanks!!!

Avoid the hassle and stay away. Anyone know a good favor store?

Susan if I may be so bold as to give my opinion on your message. Of course we ( future brides) are more inclined to give more positive comments on the vendors and halls that we have booked. That shows the faith that we have in them to deliver whatever it is we contract them to do. Of course we would praise and recommend them, isn't that what what a referral is? Why shouldn't these girls be happy to recommend Jericho Terrace if they have had a good experience so far? That is the purpose of this board, to share both the good and bad things in planning a wedding. Now I have noticed that you have posted very positive opinions on Jack & Rose.... a florist you have had a good experience with. I think it's great that you can refer them to other brides. I have read negative remarks about them as well. But, you are happy with them, and you've chosen to share that experience with us. Look at the girl who had a bad experience with Villa Lombardi. Even after they were rude to her on the phone, she admits she still wanted to go and check it out.

My advice to Jeannine and other girls is to take the good with the bad when looking into vendors. Go with your gut. If your comfortable with them go for it, if not, then keep looking. Just b/c someone had a bad experience, doesn't necessarliy mean it will happen to any of us. The good usually out weighs the bad, and honestly I doubt there is one catering hall on LI that has a flawless reputation. Good Luck.
