Re: Food Shopping --HELP and POLL ASAP BEFORE WE GO BROKE

Denise, I just FMd you back !

Heres my 2cents :

First of all keep in mind ALWAYS:
A rule of thumb
*When you hit a great sale on something that can last, STOCK UP !!! (toilet paper, tomato sauce, pasta, bounty, etc etc.)
My *PRICE* on Bounty and (whatevers on sale) is 50cents per roll. PERIOD. END OF STORY, LOL DH laughs at that, because we always see like 6 rolls for 3.99, and im like NOPE, its not 50cents a roll !
ONCE in a blue moon, I find it, and I buy enough for months and months. I ALWAYS buy name brand in paper towels. I hate cheap paper towels

Also,
*Do you get the Sunday paper? Theres a sale that Newsday has thats $1.25 per week for delivery. Let me know if you dnt have it, i'll get you the number to call. Its for almost all of long island.

I do something silly. every time I see $1.00 coupns, I cut them out. I take them to the store and if the item is under $3, lets say $2.59, I got a $1.00 coupon that doubles to $2, so I just paid 59cents for the item ! We try tons of new things this way, Glad freezer bags, wizard freshener gels,
peanuts, raisins, shampoos, toothpaste (yes brand names), etc etc etc. Take those dollar coupons as free shopping! Alot of times the item is $2 and i get it for free !!! if the item is over $3-$4 and I dont need it, I leave the coupon right in the store, so someone who does buy the item can use it !

Thats basically it, I stock up when I see good sales.
I have been buying eggs at Genovese, for 99cents, LG ones, and DH loves them. Why pay $1.79 at waldbaums! I go to Genovese anyway!
Check the Genovese and CVS papers, for things like bounty sometimes, tissues, tuna, eggs, milk, etc. they have good deals sometimes.

I think thats about it.
DO you have any specific questions?

When I do major shoppings, I go through my favorite circlulars, (pathmark, waldbaums and stop n shop) and I write down a list for each store, and then i go to the store with the biggest list. and MAYBE go to the other stores, if I get the chance and if they sales are really good.

Cold cuts, ive gotten good deals at shoprite. I dont buy them often, but Boars head was getting so pricey, I tried some brands at shoprite and they were delicious !!!

Happy shopping !!

Re: Food Shopping --HELP and POLL ASAP BEFORE WE GO BROKE

I am the worst- I just have my club card for A&P- I don't pay attention to prices and I spend between $100-$150 a week on groceries for me & DH- but we do not eat out and the food never goes to waste...

Re: Food Shopping --HELP and POLL ASAP BEFORE WE GO BROKE

I went to Costco and bought a few packages of meat which I then made into smaller portions and then used our Food Saver to vaccuum seal each package and put them in the freezer.
I don't have to go to the supermarket for tons of groceries now every week.
I just have to run in to buy cold cuts, milk and bread.
We think this is a great way to save money.

Yeah well Boar's Head is one of the problems on why our food bill is so high! I am going to check out Shop Rite too. There is one near me.

Thanks, everyone for your suggestions/recommendations! :) I really appreciate it!

Re: Food Shopping --HELP and POLL ASAP BEFORE WE GO BROKE

check your pennysaver/town crier for BOARS HEAD SALES
I rarely buy it at the supermarket b/c every week
Fireside or a local deli will put it on sale for 3.99 or 4.99 a pound, etc......

plus, waldbaums doesnt carry boars head

your DH will be impressed when you tell him how much you save! craig always laughs and says I know how to shop b/c at times I make a 112.00 waldbaums bill go down to 53.00 or so w/ my coupons!

Re: Food Shopping --HELP and POLL ASAP BEFORE WE GO BROKE

DH does the shopping and I swear he dosent look or think about the price of anything - It drives me crazy. I have a hard time getting him to use coupons too.

I didnt realize King Kullen was more expensive - of course thats were he has been shopping lately. He was favoring Stop and Shop but switched for some reason. I guess I need to search out a Walbaums and push him in that direction with the KK $5.00 off coupons in hand.

pathmark is great with their one cent coupons..

you really need to take all three circulars and look each week, cause they run different sales..

Re: Food Shopping --HELP and POLL ASAP BEFORE WE GO BROKE

Had to add my two cents. I have Foodtown Walbaums Stop & SHop, King Kullen and Pathmark all in an equal distance to my house. We always shop in Stop & Shop. I also always look at the circulars and when I see theose $10 off or $5 off coupons from King Kullen or Foodtown I always take those to Stop & Shop and they accept them! I love those weeks!!

Re: Food Shopping --HELP and POLL ASAP BEFORE WE GO BROKE

Stop and Shop takes KK coupons too???

Lisa-- discount has been in effect a couple of years now, I stopped working there almost three years ago and they had it then, I heard they might stop it soon but as of now it is still there

Fran--- the waldbaums closest to you would be N. Massapequa or Levittown, I worked in them both
Levittown is on Hempstead turnpike across from KMART, you can take wantagh avenue to Hempt tpke and the N. Massapequa waldbaums is at Jerusalem Avenue/hicksville Road

there is also a waldbaums across from where Gruman used to be in Bethpage on hicksville road but I dont like that one much, always out of stuff, I go to the n.massapequa one the most

Re: Food Shopping --How much do you spend?

Ok Back to this subject

How much do you genreally spend in a week for groceries?

We have been averaging $75.00 a week for the 2 of us. That includes lunch. And like I said my DH does not look at prices. but I guess I should be happy that he shops.

Thanks for the directions TammyJill
