The thing is, you gotta then live in Illinois.

you can live in chicago (my hometown) and chicago's a great city - there's nothing i can't get there that i can get here. you may spend a bit more than 200K, but WELL under 800K for a house, with a backyard.

ETA: i'm still kicking myself for moving here - for what we're paying in rent here, we could've bought a house and two new cars easily because our salaries would be exactly the same in chicago, but would go so much further. ah well, i fell in love with fh and new york. so it goes.

My friend called me a few weeks ago and told me that my old neighbor who just went into assisted living sold her house for 480,000!!! In westbury! A 2 bedroom with no yard...my FI parents sold their house in holbrook in 01 and what it is worth now is a little more then double what they sold it for-and they sold it for a pretty penny
a 2 bedroom house in Wesbury for $480K????????

is it really worth it to stay here?

that is INSANE!

I grew up in Westbury-the schools are ok and the area of Westbury was a nice, safe area...dont know what its like now but i thought the same thing!

I relocated to Florida in November.. and I love it.. prices are less than a third of LI's, and the area that I live in is mostly NY'ers!

I relocated to Florida in November.. and I love it.. prices are less than a third of LI's, and the area that I live in is mostly NY'ers!

isnt it amazing what you can get for your money elsewhere? my fi and i hope to move to NC after the wedding. i will be applying to grad schools there. his parents just bought a townhome there and will officially move in 3 years when his mom retires (they bought now bc they think prices will go up a lot by the time they move). there are more job opportunities for me there and the cost of living is drastically lower than LI. we can't wait to move. ~lacey

here's what $240,000 will buy in Murphy, TX. Where my FBIL lives

5 bedrooms, 3 baths

OMG - you could buy two or three or four of these houses for what you would have to pay for a house on LI. That house is awesome - if only it was in another state besides Texas

It makes me want to vomit.. really it is just sad. My one bed room house on a 50x100 lot in North Bellmore costs ssooo much more than any of those houses. This stinks

salaries down south are NOT at all bad! also, keep in mind that you can take a severe pay cut and still live better down there. if you can buy a house for $150K, well, do the math. totally do-able even with $75K a year combined salary. another huge incentive is that some states do not have state income tax!
