Re: Honest Opinions on reception halls

I am booked at Fox Hollow and I totally know what your saying about the band/dj problem off to the side. That was my main reservation about that room. When I booked my band, they knew the room very well and know how to set up. Most band/djs know that they have to put the speakers on either side of the staircase, this way the people sitting at the table at not blown away.

As for feelng dark and gloomy, its a matter of opinion. Personally I find a lot of places tacky with all that marble....but thats MY opinion. I think the Briar Fox room is very pretty with the fireplace and the dark wood, I've seen it in pictures of fellow brides weddings and its amazing. I admit that I was not crazy about it the first time I saw it, but when its set for a wedding, it feels like a different room. That's why I choose fox hollow, its beauitful and not over-done. It does feel very homey and i loved the winter garden room for my cocktail hour.

I am getting married at FH as well but I have the Garden Terrace room. However, i am having my CH in that room. I will admit I am not crazy about the room either but its mainly b.c of the low ceiling. BUT my friend had her reception in that room a few years back and it wasGREAT. I never even noticed the ceiling was low or anything, I didnt notice it until I checked out the place for myself. The only time I saw that room set up for a wedding was for my friends wedding...and it was beautiful (and she didnt even have floral arrangements!)

I am a FH bride and I was not offended by the comment made previously. Everyone is entittled to their opinions and most inportantly everyone has DIFFERENT tastes. The bride asked for an honest opinion and someone gave it to her. We are all adults here, there is no need to take things so personally.

Re: Honest Opinions on reception halls

have you ever thought about East wind? I'm getting married at country gardens which is too small for the amount of people you are having- but they also have 'the Estates' which is amazing-
great size, but its own building so its very quaint.
you should check it out.
The food is great too.Good lUck

Thank you everyone! We looked the WCC and thought the place was really nice and my parents have been to a wedding their and said the service and food was outstanding. My only issue is that we are planning a late fall/early winter wedding and I just felt we wouldn't get to utilize their beautiful grounds.

We also went to Jericho terrace-- and at first i was in love. But, the guarantee requested was higher then what we expected, which made us feel the place was too big for what we are looking for and not as homey.

Fox hollow is what we are looking for as far as the homey feel. The room we would get is the smaller room and the cocktail hour is the winter pavillian room. The dance floor is a nice size-- but the area where the band or dj sets up is off to the side not near the dance floor. I don't know if that should be a concern or not.

it was a concern for us..among other things in that room. they offered us the WGP room for our CH which we loved. and the ceremony room was gorgeous. .....but the reception room we hated. it was dark, the celiengs were low, the DJ was in an akward location...its just didnt work for us on many levels.

ive heard great things about westbury manor. also look into douglaston manor!

I remember you saying you didn't want a long engagement and are hoping to be married in 2009, unless someone cancelled, Wesbury Manor is not available....we tried....it was of GREAT sentimental value since we went to wedding at the WM as a first date

Definitely check out Douglaston Manor, I know they have dates available and the bridal suites are LOVELY. Prices are similar to Fox Hollow.

Re: Honest Opinions on reception halls

Have you thought about looking into the Garden Terrace room at Fox Hollow instead? I loved Fox Hollow but I liked the Garden Terrace room better... so they told me i could get that room if i could have guaranteed more people (unfortunately for us we couldnt make the guarantee for a Sat night, so we switched to a daytime wedding so we could be more flexible w/ the guarantee!) good luck!

Gotcha! I believe you are talking about the Briar Fox room (you go down a couple of steps, right?) at the FH. That is the room they offered us as well (with CH in the WGP), and we personally hated it. When we were there for the third time we saw the BF room set up for a wedding, and it was SO dark, we also didn't like the placement of the dj, and quite honestly it was kinda depressing and basementy.

ETA - Just one more thing about WCC - we also got married in November and we got to use the grounds a bit - just wear a shawl!

when you call a RH room 'depressing and basementy' maybe you should consider the fact that there are people on these boards that are getting married in that 'depressing and basementy' room.
everyone is entitled to their own opinion but i would NEVER say that about a reception hall knowing that people on here might be getting married there.

THANK YOU... that was so rude to say those things... as i got married in the Briar Fox room... it was beyond GORGEOUS and perfect!
my guests raved about it to this day.. it was not at all dark...

I agree about the DJ. I really liked the fact that all his big ugly equipment will be to the side out of everyone's way and out of my pictures! His speakers will be by the front door by the pillars so they won't be so obvious.

I think it also depends on the month you are getting married. If it's a winter wedding, then that room is perfect! When I saw that gorgeous fireplace and imagined lighting that room with candles, I was sold!

Thanks again everyone! I am going to check out all the suggestions.

I really liked the room in the fox hollow-- I had just never seen the dj or band away from the dance floor. But it doesn't seem like a problem and the dj or band are professions so I am sure they know what to do! I think I will go back and look again.

Thanks again for all the great suggestions.

Re: Honest Opinions on reception halls

We're getting married at the Royalton. I wanted a mansion/homey feel and it's perfect. They throw in a lot of things that were extra at other places and all of the food is completely customizable. The staff has been fantastic so far. We even got to do a tasting and the food is out of this world!
We are also having around 150 people and they have room for up to 225 (I think).

im sure you have concerns abouat the DJ thing...but like i have mentioned .. it is actually better that they are behind the tables because they are completely out of everyone's way! and you dont even know they are there! the speakers are in the front by the doors.. very discreet as well.. so it was perfect the way it worked out..

most DJ's are very familiar with the Briar Fox's set up.. and there is no problems with it!!
