Re: How do you feel about smokers??

Well, NOBODY is a fan of smoking. It's gross! But some of us can't kick the addiction. I'm almost there. Now that I'm going to start TTC, I have no choice! Maybe you guys can be my support system. My DH is not handling my mood swings well (when I go through withdrawal.) I've been a smoker for 14 years. This is hard to say the least.

We can help!

One thing that worked really well when I quit smoking: I told myself that I wasn't really quitting, but cutting down. That helps you to avoid the terrible, immediate-withdrawal-inducing 'this is my last cigarette ever' feeling. I cut down very gradually and finally stopped (and, even when I stopped, I was still telling myself that I could have one again someday if I really wanted one -- the trick worked wonders). I don't even miss cigarettes at all anymore, even when I go out drinking. You may think now that you'll always miss smoking, but you won't. Honest!

Another trick: I found that drinking lots of water helped. No idea why. Something to do besides smoke or eat, I guess!

Stay strong and GOOD LUCK!

Re: How do you feel about smokers??

I wish you all the best in quitting!

A co-worker of DH's has been smoking for 14 years and he was out the other day...turn out he found a lump on the back of his tongue that he needed to have biopsied! He quit that day. Can you imagine being under 30 and possibly having oral cancer!!! I've worked with adults who have had oral cancer and needed a partial glossectomy and it isn't good...messes up your swallow big time!

I had a friend who smoked and he loved it! He said he never wanted to quit......

although, he was a huge cynic and figured the more he smoked, the closer to death he would be........

such a positive person!!

So, what can we do to help you quit? I've never had to do it myself, but I hear it's difficult, and if you're willing to try, I'm willing to help you however I can!!!

Re: How do you feel about smokers??

I'm a smoker too...and of course I hate it...I hate the smell, the intense withdrawel when I dont have one, that it bothers my FH (non-smoker), that I offend some people, that my lungs are suffering, that my teeth are yellow, that I spend all that money....YET with all I hate about it ...I still can't stop....I have nothing against anti-smoker's at all, I KNOW its gross and harmfull, what I hate is when they say ' why would someone choose to do that'...I didnt CHOOSE this, now as hard as I CHOOSE not to...Its a habit and its addicting....The people who quit can attest to how hard it was...sometimes its close to impossible....
I wish that people could look at smokers and realize how everyone hates it but is faced with the hardest thing in their life- quitting...

I plan to quit when I am TTC, I dont smoke in front of children , and wont in the future....

I have been smoking for 14 years, I would probably give up a finger if I could wake up tommorow a non-smoker....you can hate the smoke, but try and have some compassion for those that are addicted...

Re: How do you feel about smokers??

I just don't understand why anyone would choose to smoke knowing what it can do to you. I think it is great that people want to stop and should.
My Aunt stopped smoking over 20 years ago, still got tumors. Why do you want to put your future families through the pain of watching you possible get sick and die?
My mother was inthe hospital for a month because after they removed her tumor her lung kept deflating. I can't tell you the pain that i went through watching my mom suffer. Is this what people want their children to go through?
I thank God everyday that my mom was lucky, she will be at my wedding in October and because of her friggin smoking she almost wasn't! It would have killed me if i had to have a memory candle at my wedding intsead of my mom!

I am sorry that i am being so nutty about this...THis post comes at a coincidential point in my life, my wedding, my aunt's diagnosis...etc.
I really am not trying to be a fanatic and preach but i a truly emotional about this topic.

I understand your point completly and I think hearing stories liek yours are what helps us smokers truly want to quit and gain the motiviation and strength needed!
I think you SHOULD be telling your story, it tells the hard truth and I appreciate it.

Re: How do you feel about smokers??

I used the patch to quit! i haven't had a cigarette since i put that first patch on.
My FIL said he's tried everything to quit, but he's the type that if he feels like he wants a cigarette the first day of the patch (or whatever) then it didn't work, and gives up. He quits everything but smoking!!

For the male smokers....and the DH's of the girls on the board - I think smoking can negatively affect TTCing. Keep that in mind!

Re: How do you feel about smokers??

I don't smoke. I feel people should smoke away from doors of office buildings. When I walk out of work, I'm right in the middle of the smoking. My sister'sboyfriend smokes. When he comes over, he goes outside for a smoke.

Re: How do you feel about smokers??

I smoke, and I want to quit, but I'm not yet ready. After the wedding I plan on doing something about it.

I don't smoke in front of children and I don't smoke near people who don't/people it bothers.

I would never smoke in someones house or car unless they smoked even if they said it was okay. It just the right thing to do.

Re: How do you feel about smokers??

I personally don't like it and am glad it's been banned from restaurants. I am surprised at the fact that it is banned from bars and always feel kind of weird when I am in a bar and noone is smoking. I don't miss the smell at all though

Both my parents smoked & they had 6 kids. Though it could be the case for some.
