Re: How much $$ for your first/starter home??

We're actually in contract right now! Unfortunately, it's a ton o' . At a certain point, I think that the higher the price, the much less your potential to see an increase in value as quickly as you would with homes that are priced at a level that are more affordable for more people, so we're trying to look at it as an investment in our family and lifestyle rather than as the ideal monetary investment. I agree with whoever said you might get more answers with a poll.

Re: How much $$ for your first/starter home??

I love living in Philadelphia! In March 2004, we bought our 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath, brick colonial on .25 acres, for $237,000. Though, we gutted it, and renovated the whole thing, so god knows what its worth now...

Re: How much $$ for your first/starter home??

Wow, I think we are the lowest! We bought in 1996 for $110,000. It's a small ranch but my neighbor in 1998 paid $135,000 for her ranch and it just has an extra room. We would NEVER be able to buy now.

Re: How much $$ for your first/starter home??

We just bid $330 yesterday for .25 acre in Sound Beach. The taxes are $6K -

If this doesn't work I would prefer to stop looking. Its our 5th bid - I am pretty disgusted with LI prices and taxes.

My friends in other states think I m kidding when I tell them this is starter home prices

Re: How much $$ for your first/starter home??

We're buying a condo in Chicago and I thought we were saving money buying here and not NY. But we're spending more than anyone has listed on here But, when compared to buying in NYC we are getting a deal! (At least thats what we keep telling ourselves )

Re: How much $$ for your first/starter home??

I don't think there is such a thing as a starter house anymore (unless you go the condo route)

The prices are way out of control. People are lucky to be able to afford a house these days never mind trade up.

The houses in our neighborhood are in the mid-high 500 range now. We bought in '03 and our house has increased well over 100K but where the heck could we afford to go?
