Jenny, we thank our lucky stars every day!! And to think we almost didn't buy because we thought it was at the height of the market and the prices would come down
We are loving our house and location more and more as we see the market now. And yes, our taxes are low and we're not complaining!

$325K for a 3br, 2ba colonial in Carle Place. This was over three years ago-- judging by recent home sales near us, I think it would be between $450 and $475K today (in addition to the natural appreciation on the house, we also remodeled one of the bathrooms ourselves)And to think we thought we were getting ROBBED three years ago!

Believe me we know how fortunate we are! Honestly we couldn't afford a house like ours now! It's crazy!
We did do some work, refinished the floors, painted, new tile in the kitchen...but thats IT!! And just by the RE market alone, our house more than doubled in value!

Re: How much $$ for your first/starter home??
I hope we can say the same in a few years...we're buying a 3br/1bth ranch, lr, dr, den, eik, full bsmt, on 1/2 acre, for $365..we go to closing at the end of april...hopefully, in a few years after we've added a bath, updated the kitchen, and done all the cosmetic work, we'll be able to see if our investment has paid off....

$160,000 for a four bedroom, two bath, kitchen, l/r, den, office, dining room, two car garage back in 00'. We also have two decks (rear and one in front) that extends across the entire house. 160 x 109. Taxes $6,000. But we had to invest over $150,000 in it for complete renovations.

We are in the process of buying a 3 br, 1.5 ba, colonial with a finished basement and extended kitchen, in Valley Stream for just under 400K.I'm also hoping that with a few cosmetic changes, it will appreciate so I dont feel so bad about the cost...I dont know how anyone is buying anything on LI with these prices!!!

We bought a 'Z' shaped ranch 2 bed/3bath for 329,000, 1 block from the great south bay in October. It needs a few things done, but not much. (we made the 2bed into 1 bedroom).
