Don't feel stupid.... I just found out from my mom that my 14 year old cat was put to sleep on tuesday. My parents didn't tell me because I started a new job and only called them into work in the morning and they didn't want to upset me.
She was really sick and getting worse. When I saw her in April she was so thin, but she always has and we just figured that we were only noticing it now because my other cats are HUGE. Anyway, we found out she had cancer, but since she was doing well, we didn't put her to sleep, until now. I thought I'd be okay with it since I've heard shes been doing worse and worse. I just am so down now after finding out. She wasn't the most affectionate cat, especially compared to the others, but she was part of the family and she's been there since I was in 7th grade. I am dreading going home in Dec. to her not being there.
So please don't feel stupid for being upset. I'm right there with you. I hope you feel better soon though. Hang in there.

Thank you so much girls. I left lastnight for MA because I didn't want to be around today. I'm not even going to call my mom to hear about it. I just want to let it sink in that he's gone. I'll face the true music on Sunday when I go home. But thank you all again. Your words have comforted me more than you know

I'm so sorry.
I had to put my dog to sleep when she was 16 - I got her for my 7th birthday. And your cat was not 'just a cat' - he was your family.

OMG - I am so sorry...

You really shouldnt feel stupid at all. Your cat has become part of your family. I have had my cat for only 5 years now but I would seriously break down if I ever have to put him to sleep. He is so much a part of my life - he sleeps in my bed! It is tough to lose a important member of your life.
