I'm secondary ed certified for social studies and I haven't even gotten a whiff of an interview...it's like I send out my applications into a black hole...it's so depressing
I'm going for my masters now in library science, school media specialist and working as a public librarian, maybe I can get into the teaching profession as a librarian, we'll see...I'm so frustrated!

I am so confused, I thought you had to have a masters to teach?? Isn't that part of becoming certified (besides taking the tests)??

no many people have their undergraduate degree in education

now i realize i should have done this
many districts don't hire people with masters because they have to pay them almost $10,000 more a year

i am in the same boat as you girls , however this week i got a lot of bites. i think now is the time that retirees are telling the schools.

i dont know if its necessarily wise not to have a masters- most schools want dual certified people and if they really like you but dont have the money in the budget they will ask you to have a pay cut your first year.

this is the problem.... they cannot tell you to take a pay cut... unions won't let them...
it is just tough but hey if a district wants you they are not going to care if you have a masters or not

Ladies - Don't get discouraged. I have worked in education for the last 6 years, plus 4 years at the college level. It is a combination of who you know, having patience, and timing.

Many schools have only been to screen and interview very recently. I only started calling candidates myself the end of last week. We had to wait for the budget and then get organized. Plus many districts are still determining staffing needs for next year based on anticipated enrollment, etc.

My suggestions:

Apply on-line and followup by mailing your resume and cover letter.

Get the sunday NY Times and check for adds.

Touch base with anyone who you student taught for, etc and give them a copy of your resume.

Give your high school that you went to your resume and ask to meet with the prinicpal.

Consider getting experience by looking for summer programs, night school programs (secondary level) or subbing.


Good luck to all.... and don't give up...many districts do hire throughout the summer.

I literally sent out resumes to every school in suffolk. I heard back from only one. I've been through 2 demo lessons, one interview and am now biting my nails to hear about a final interview. My fear is that I don't get this and where does that leave me? Staying in the city...in one of the worst schools to teach for. UGH! On top of it, many schools are making cuts due to the budgets not being passed. Those district definitely won't hire anyone!

Wow, I can't believe how many of us are looking for jobs and are in the same boat...we should start some sort of networking/connection thing throughout nyc, long island and westchester to help each other get teaching jobs...
There seem to be some teachers on this site that do work in these areas and would know if their schools are hiring and who to send resumes to...maybe they can help up with connections?? Is that possible?

My suggestions to those of you WITHOUT a masters...look into alternative teaching programs such as Teach for America or the Teaching Fellows program, I also know Fordham University and Manhattanville have alternative teaching programs as well. Once you are accepted to these programs you commit to teach in an inner city school for two years (the program places you and guarantees you a job) and the nyc board of ed pays for your masters at the university that is working with the school district you are assigned to teach in.

I did the teaching fellows program and have taught first grade for 2 years in the bronx and just graduated from Fordham university last month and didn't have to pay for my masters at all...anyone interested in hearing anything else about these programs can fm me!

I am elementary and Special ed certified (well, just about. Albany is very backed up so my special ed and permanent elementary ed will take approx. 24 weeks to be granted)

It is really hard to get an elementary school job there are not many out there. Now with a lot of budget not passing they have to wait and see what happens. You will find something just keep sending resumes out. It took me one and half years to get a guidance counselor position. I will let you know if I here anything in my district. GOOD LUCK

in response to jillbean- my friend just got hired by east williston and becasue she had her masters and had 13 years of work experience in schools they wernt going to hire her b/c of money. so when they finally hired her they offered her a salary with less years then she had so they would pay her less. so some schools will do that.

i have interviewed for about 5 nassau county districts and havent heard anything back yet - hoping and waiting. but i did send out a resume to every school in brooklyn and queens and yestruday 3 of those schools called for interviews next week. it is a pay cut of about $12,000, but its a job with benefits. it cant hurt to try the city for a year

yes SOME do hire with masters and more often times than not if you have experience they will pay you for less experience but if you have your masters theyHAVE TO pay you
years of experience is different... they are allowed to do this... i know

I can't belive this---I interviewed with a school district last NOVEMBER--they called me a month later to tell me I didn't get the position. Well, today, I got a letter from them in the mail asking me to come in for a demo! How strange!!!!!! Maybe miracles do happen!
