I am soo pissed off right now with some of you brides making comments about the strike that you know nothing about, only what you hear on the news or read in the papers. Especially about fine all of them because they're azz'z or they should get fired and go on welfare. It's really disgusting what comes out of some peoples mouth.
My FH works for transit and he is losing 2days pay everyday because of the union president and his executive board who make at least $90,000 a yaer voting to strike and the 33,000 MTA workers who are affected by it. When this is all over the workers and their families are the ones who will be hurt by this. Sure peolple have a hard time getting to work but you know what at least you're getting there, until this is over FH can't work!

he can go back to work. my uncle has wored in the TA for 15 plus years. I am very close to him and his buddies. I know first hand what goes on. they DON'T have it that bad, though there is room for improvement.

and the rat issue...people, we have to remember they are UNDERGROUND for the most part. we all see rats every day. they'll be striking til kingdom come before the rats go away.

but truth be told, the benes are what attracts people to civil service jobs, and cutting them for the future could also weaken the pool of applicants the TA sees, which will eventually effect us all.

Ditto on the Unions.

I don't have a contract, in fact most people don't have contracts with their employers. I'm not guaranteed a pension and only have the option of retiring at 55 if I can provide for myself for the rest of my life based upon my own savings and personal investments. In addition, I'd most likely be laughed at and then fired if I insisted on an 8% raise every year - even if it was only for 3 years, which I believe is their request.

So, in terms of the union's demands - I'm pretty darned annoyed and extremely frustrated.

In terms of the individuals - I wish them luck in getting what they want, but i don't see it turning out in their favor (just my own personal prediction).

I also walked 27 blocks to midtown after taking the PATH train from WTC to 33rd -which itself took over an hour today. So take everything i'm saying with a grain of salt.

I'm a state unionized employee myself at a SUNY University, the state and the city are known for their lavish pension plans and healthcare plans while our pay is not as high as the private sector and that is usually why people take state and city jobs along with job security so fighting to keep the retirement age at 55 does not seem unreasonable to me.

Some people can say anything they want, and if you agree with it everything is OK, BUT disagree or state your own opinion, then there's a problem.
I'm not saying everyone's like that, but there are a couple of brides that are like that.
You can tell the brides that are friends before this site.
I don't mean any harm, but we all should be able to say what we want, and not have to worry about hurting someone's feels.

IMO I believe they are one-sided because people talking from anger, they are being inconvenienced and we can't see past that and what the media portrays. We are not in the situation.

ETA just answering your question, don't want to add no more fuel to the fire.

I just spoke to my SIL and she said her husband tried to go to work today and COULD NOT GET IN!!! Certain locations were easier for employees to access than others. Her husband went in today and the union is outside blocking employees from entering.
So not EVERYONE can 'get back to work'

i'm sorry to hear that. perhaps he can try another depot or yard, or go to their headquarters in Brooklyn. he may not be doing his normal job, but he will be put to work somewhere, and more importantly he will be paid for it. does he work for train or bus? perhaps I could help him find a place to report to. No one should be forced to LOSE money against their will. Toissant is NOT being penalized, since he's not an MTA employee...it's just disgusting.

Its kind of hard for me to have symapthy for transit workers or there families because I am a cop and now I do not get to see my family cause i have to work 12 hour tours 3am to 3pm get home by 5:15pm eat something pass out and start my day all over again and go and watch the transit works so they do not get out of hand. oh by the way your fh could go back to work when ever he wants he just has to is walk pass the picket line and go to work just like over 1,000 transit workers have done already. no one in the union had to go on strike just cause there president said to. if he told them to jump off a bridge would all the transit workers do that as well I mean its common sense you do not want to strike then go to work. Besides police officers this strike is hurting all Long island family and city familys. oh by the way with the union being fined 1 millions dollars a day now I hope your FH knows that 1 million a day is not coming out of the union pocket but out of his pocket and all tranist workes when they pay there dues so no matter how you look at it the transit works are losing a lot more then they will get out of this contract!!! this is my opinion. well now I have to go to sleep at 5:30 just to get up at 1:30 am to go deal with all these crazy people good night all!!!!

Listen, a lot of people are affected by the strike. we own a small family store and we usually expect sales from the christmas season to carry us through most of the year since people don't generally shop in this type of store much outside of xmas & valentines. We had almost a negative profit for today. It's hard, more than an inconvenience for all.

I just saw on NY1 that queens center had a 90% drop in sales compared to this time last year.

But liweddings is not the place to argue because no one knows any other persons life. this should be for weddings and such. so its not really fair to make heated comments on either side.

I haven't made any comments on either side of the MTA thing because either way it would be one-sided, and I feel it isn't fair to judge either side w/o personal knowledge (which i dont have of the other side in the situation, hence no comment )
