Re: nypd / fdny wives - holiday question

Actually...he's not allowed to do 24's yet. When he's off it's great because it's three days, but when he's on nights, I don't see him for three days. Once he starts 24's, it should be better...but then with the schedule...I'll probably be more confused!

Re: nypd / fdny wives - holiday question

Really? I didn't know that.

We actually owe the city $1200.00 bucks right now because one of DH's genius friends told him that he has to use all his vacation time before he switched over. Well, guess what...they were wrong and he ended up using time he hadn't even accrued yet!

Re: nypd / fdny wives - holiday question

I think they do...it's just not as often. When they work for someone else it's like a favor and later the favor is returned. It's very different.

He likes it so far! Everyone's been very nice to him. He is the only new guy in his house, so he expected the worst...but it's been great. He's very lucky!

Re: nypd / fdny wives - holiday question

Kelly,

If you have any ? about the chart ask away I am an old pro at it now OT is not as high as it once was due manpower being increased and since he is still a 'probie' he will not see much .

Re: nypd / fdny wives - holiday question

MICHELLE...THANK YOU!!!

I think I've just about got it figured out. I want to re-type it in English...(I'm a geek like that)... He's #7, so if a #7 is on the top line, he works days and if this #7 is on the bottom, he works night. I'm just really confused about that ONE DAY that he has to work in the middle of what seems to be a pattern. That's what's confusing me. Am I making any sense? Do you know what I am talking about???

Re: nypd / fdny wives - holiday question

The FD calendar is pretty easy to figure out once you get the hang of it. FH usually does 2 24s every 8 days. If your guy is still on straight tours, he probably has to do 2 day tours and 2 night tours every 8 days (he will have to report to the firehouse 4 times)

Re: nypd / fdny wives - holiday question

My dad was a cop (actually retired detective now) and holidays in my home werent normal either. I remember my dad being home for ONE full christmas day. He would either stumble in in the morning exhausted, watch us open and go to bed or he wouldnt be there at all in the morning and would come home just to share dinner with us and miss all the opening.

I just wanted to commiserate with all others out there effected by the lifestyles of these jobs. I know its hard for them but sometimes its even harder for the families that are involved.

HUgs to you all!

Re: nypd / fdny wives - holiday question

Kelly,

You got the hang of it if the 7 appears in the top row he is working the 9X (day ) tour and if it appears on the bottom row he has the 6X (night) tour. Once he is allowed to do 24's the fun starts Stevie is group 16 and does 24's with group 3 so I have to check the chart for both sets of numbers to see what possible work combo's he has..However when we know school is not out or around the holidays it is so miuch easier to figure out what we can and can't do, but then again it is sometimes easy to get a mutual (swap tour with someone else)

Hope I didn't confuse you

Re: nypd / fdny wives - holiday question

You couldn't confuse me anymore than I already am. Now I'm just afraid I WILL get used to it and then they'll switch him to 24's and then I'll REALLY be confused. Thank you for taking the time to help me...I really appreciate it. I'll get it eventually!

Re: nypd / fdny wives - holiday question

Patrick has a beeper and a cell phone as a sergeant, so there's no hiding for him!

It ****s with the holidays. My dad was a cop and never missed a holiday. I have no idea how he pulled that one off.
If Patrick has to work a holiday he always makes sure he works early and is home early. He has a detail that allows him to create his own schedule ~ that helps! He often volunteers to work Christmas morning so cops with kids can be home to see them open their presents from Santa.
I hope now that we are having our own baby others will return the kindness.

Re: nypd / fdny wives - holiday question

My hubby works every holiday. I used to go over to my parents house but they have moved so I have spent x-mas alone for the past two years. It stinks because hubby never gets off holidays, weekends, or summers b/c he has no senority.
