I gave my mother a locket w/ a photo of her & my Dad on their wedding day. (My father had passed away the year before)

It had to be to my dad last year...
He collects these special type of snow globes, and he was missing one from the collection, and he could not find it anywhere. He called all over the country. He's been searching for years now for it.
Well DH and I tried everywhere on the net, Ebay etc for a few years too and found nothing.
And then one day DH was messing around and one popped up on Ebay! My dad was SOOOO excited when he opened it up. He couldn't believe it!

My best gift ever that I gave is not a gift.. it was a card.

I moved to New York City all by myself in 1999. That first Christmas I was definitely not able to be anywhere near my father for Christmas. This isn’t the first time and it didn’t seem like a big deal but I guess in a way it was since it wasn’t like I wasn’t driving over, I was too far away. So I sent him a card. It was a really sweet card which pretty much went along the lines of this… sorta,

You taught me to drive
You taught me to the change a tire
You let me cry on your shoulder
You let me show you my scrapes
You let me grow up
You put me on my path that’s taken me away from you
You may be miles away but I’ll always be Daddy’s little girl.

Or something like that… There was more and it was better said of course!

He still has this card. We’re sentimental like that. He cries every time he reads it. Heh.

Other Xmas gifts that ROCKED!
A keyboard for Jim (our first xmas) it’s a ergonomic keyboard like you’ve NEVER seen. The keys are sunken in not just separated. The Enter button is your right thumb and the delete is your left thumb. It’s odd, but it makes it easier on your wrists and makes you a faster typer. EXPENSIVE! And a pain the butt to find! I looked everywhere and finally dragged in an exbf who’s a technie to help. Argh. Still uses it! Hehe

Ok, another stupid one. My brother really wanted luke skywalker for xmas one year (we were MUCH younger, just after my mother left my father). We had no money to speak of. I collected all the glass bottles I could find in the neighborhood for over a month (they were worth a nickel a piece) and cashed them in. I saved up all the spare change I could find on the way to and from school (kids do drop money). I bought that stupid toy. We’re talking no more than $3. I wrapped it in newspaper and gave it to my brother. He still has it. His son plays with it now.

Did I mention we were sentimental?

To our family it’s never the gift that’s important it’s the effort that went into it, what does it MEAN to the receiver. Like Jim buying me a big fluffy terry cloth robe. I always dreamed of having one. It meant so much! We’ve never been the family to need or want fancy stuff, we’re really happy if it’s something small or something others may find out, as long as it’s something we like. Does makes us a bit hard to shop for.

(probably a thread killer post, sorry)

Best gift i gave was to my family the christmas right after 9/11. Both me and DH work in the city and we are the only ones from my family who do, so we brought them all I Heart NY shirts and we all put them on and wore them that christmas. It is now a treasured family picture of all of us showing our support for the city we love so much at that terrible time. And you know what none of us remember the other things we got but we all still have our shirts.

Well, according to my DH, in 11 weeks, our Son.

I think the best gift I gave was to my mother, I got her a gold pendant that has my & my brothers picture engraved on it from when I was 2 and he was 3, when she opened that she cried hysterically for 1/2, she never takes it off....ever
