We recently (like two weeks ago) looked at a condo in Putnam (Brewster, or Carmel, I don't remember now). It was $310k. Two bedrooms, 2.5 baths, finished basement. 2000 square feet. It was very nice. It seems like there are a good number of condos in that area in that price range.

houlihanlawrence.com is a good place to look.

brewster..that's exactly where my BIL said to look and that sounds perfect....did you find it from that site?

Oh definitely I agree with Tracy -- if you look into Carmel , Brewster , Cortlandt... well into Putnam County.. you can find some really nice townhomes up there, nice areas as well.

I'm not sure how long the commute is into NYC from there, but I'd say its still about 1.5 hour into Grand Central..

The only reason DH and I don't look up that far is because as long as he's still working in Woodbury, LI we cannot move any further north than we already are .. he's be communting for hours a day and its just not logical for us

we're kind of all looking to move tot eh same areas eventually my mom, my sis and BIL and me and FH..brester would be ideal because Fh works literally right above Grand central station, my sis is a nurse and can get a job anywhere as long as it's NY state...it's my poo BIL who works in LI that's the problem

Yes, I found it on there, I can FM you the name of the woman from HL who we are working with. She seems nice and seems to know a lot about the different complexes. We like that area a lot- it's quiet but not too rural. I know the complex we looked at was right near the Metro North station, not sure how long the train ride is to the city. I know the drive to the Bronx will take me about an hour.

you can buy a 2-3 bedroom townhouse in NJ for under $350K. we paid less than that for ours and we're only an hour away from the city.

Check out www.mlsli.com and put in how much you want to spend and where, then click condo and it will bring up available units.

Re: Where is a less expensive place to buy a house/condo?

I live in Huntington Village.

A 1 bedroom co-op here goes for 289,000 and a two bedroom I have seen for around 325,000. The prices are solid though. They sell for what they list for.

We literally walk into the village. It's great !!!
