annbee-you crack me up,first of all. Finally someone who agrees that having a professional to make you look your best is a small price to pay. After all, your appearane is important-yet everyone complains about the cost of good work-especially that 'wedding bunny' chick who expects the world for free it seems. Boy, is she in for a rude awakening. Just because she is getting married does not mean that a hair stylist or makeup artist has to beg for her business or discount the cost of a trial.

I started it trying to shed some light on an issue I was confused about. I just didnt get why meeting with any vendor was free for a wedding but hair and make-up cost a pretty penny?

Anyone that works in a sales-related job has to sacrifice something in order to 'score' a job, why are H&M artists excluded from that? Whether it be getting samples of an Rx from your DR to the mini-lipsticks from Avon, to a band showcase, to a RH tasting, to a car testdrive... a customer needs to be 'Wowed' before making a commitment.

Im sure there are cheaper routes to go, and I definitely plan on figuring them out. I was just shouting out to the girls for their opinions.

Obviously, everyone thinks differently! Thats the beauty of this place!

I understand your points, but I wouldnt categorize hair and makeup as sales, I would think it is the service industry. I guess you can look at it like this: If you wanted to go out to eat, you wouldnt expect a restaurant to give you a free or discounted meal just to see if you would go there again, so why would you expect that of a salon? giving away merchandise for a business or company is different than the service industry because it involves using someones time, and lets face it- time is money

It most certainly is sales. You are marketing your services to a specific group, brides. In order to be succesful at it you must SELL YOURSELF. Selling yourself to a bride means that you must make her
#1 feel comfortable
#2 look beautiful
#3 trust you completely.
So yes I do believe that trials should be at no cost. All vendors contribute their time and services and many do give you tangible items as samples at no cost.

a sample for a makeup artist would be a free trial, it's a sample of their work on YOUR face.

as a teacher, I'd be laughed out of the building if I asked people to pay me extra for time I spend grading, making lesson plans, giving students extra help, going to school events, etc, etc, etc. If I spend all weekend grading tests, nobody is going to give me a penny for it.

It's just part of the job. That's it. You just do it because it's part of what you do.

As I said, I understand if make up artists need to charge maybe a small fee for traveling, and a small fee for materials used... but that's a far cry from the exhorbitant prices many are charging.

I don't see why people needed to get nasty and personal here. It was a simple question, and many of us simply expressed our opinions. So, unless you're a make up artist coming in here to drum up drama, and not actually a bride, there was really no reason for you to take all this so personally and get nasty. Have a lovely day!
