Trials should cost MUCH less $....

People do look to rip brides and grooms off... so we should all be smart consumers!

In an attempt to shed some light on this subject, I will put it this way- you wouldnt expect anything free from any other vendor, so why would you expect a stylist or makeup artist to perform a service for free just to 'sell' themselves for future work? If they or anyone in the service industry had to work for free all day it would probably be a little more than difficult to make a living, right?

I for one thing it is ridiculous how much trials cost.

I understand that vendors are doing us a service but i think they shouldn't carge that much for a trial.

For my first trial it was free and I gave her a tip b/c i understood that she did us a service.

I have been calling around and have been getting trial prices that vary.
1) $35 mu
2) Hair and MU $150- day of $150 EACH!!- plus $100 b4 8am charge= $400 total
3) $85 each for hair and mu.....

I can understand paying alot for trial if i KNEW that it would be applied to the day of which most don't do.

So I will be choosing my trials VERY carefully!!

The prices are through the roof! This is why I am still waiting on my trials. To be honest I don't want to sit w/ a few people. I want to do the research and find the one that works. I understand they are rendering a service here and that their products are something that needs to be replaced.
HOWEVER
have you ever put 50.00 worth of makeup on your face in one day? My whole bag isn't worth THAT much! Plus then I get to thinking about it and I know that it's way way way too much. When you include the cost of hair and mu it's outragous.
I sent my girls an email letting them know I was looking into getting MU done professionally and all of them were surprised I decided too. I told them all to think about who they know and see if they can think of a few friends that work more affordably.
PLUS I have a little good news. I spoke to an old friend from work yesteday. He is going to do our hair for the wedding! He has done all our hair in the past and I trust him. He was so excited about it - it was great!!!

SIDENOTE - Here's a choker for you all. My first wedding my hair only cost me 25.00 for a gorgeous updo. That was 9 years ago - INFLATION!

While I do agree with everyone on how much trials cost these days I can also see why....

Gas prices (travel to and from) -
Rent (whoever has a salon or what not) -
Make up (the supplies themselves are killer- 16 bucks for MAC eyeshadow.....)-

So as these basic forms of living are going up so are the vendors prices in order to make some money and to provide food on the table.
I do agree though some prices are UP there and yes when they do hear wedding its automaticaly in the hundreds however alot of vendors have no choice in raising their prices.....

My girl came from Queens to my apartment in Manhattan and spent a good three hours with me. I completely understand why she charges - she really went out of her way for me...and it was on a Sunday!

In an attempt to shed some light on this subject, I will put it this way- you wouldnt expect anything free from any other vendor, so why would you expect a stylist or makeup artist to perform a service for free just to 'sell' themselves for future work? If they or anyone in the service industry had to work for free all day it would probably be a little more than difficult to make a living, right?

actually, yeah, I DO expect things for free from other vendors. I expect sample fabric swatches for bridesmaids dresses and I expect the salespeople to help me and behave in a courteous and polite manner, I expect a folder of information for free from each vendor I visit, I expect their time for free when I meet with them, I really would have felt pretty cheated if my hall insisted I pay for a food tasting (because, give me a break, at the cost I'm paying them for the wedding, they can afford to give me a food tasting), I expect sample dvds from bands and admission to their showcases...

My photographer is throwing in with my package an engagement shoot, thank you cards, and a dvd montage of photos...

I understand if people travel to your house, definitely... and I understand a small charge for use of their products. But let's face it, they are NOT using more than maybe $10 or $15 worth of product on you at a trial. Certainly not $50, and definitely not $100. It's like people who charge more for the bride than the bridesmaid - it's not like brides suddenly cost an extra $100 to do! They just mark it up because they can.

I totally agree with you.

The prices of these trials are crazy.
My sister is a hair stylist in NY and you will only pay for your trail if you decide not to use her and the price is nothing near 100 or 150 dollars. It is all part of sales or getting business. It is stupid the price of trails are, can't stress that enough.

My sister and I am not here trying to promote her nor will I state her name or location She has been doing hair for many years now. These people make money and a lot of them work out of there home so overhead cost is being incurr by them. I think it is just greed.

In Corporate American people do that all the time.. compainies always give clients things to get there buisniess, free trips, free lunch etc.... it is the chance that you take being in the business world you just pray and hope that you get that person business.

I once call a vendor and her price was over the roof and i stated to her why are you charging me that much she state that that is the going rate, which prove that she can charge less it is just greed.

When someone hears wedding they jack the price way up, but they have to remember that our lives or bills don't stop becuase we are getting marry it is just another expense that we are incurring. And why should i not have the wedding that i desire because there are greedy vendors out there wanting us to pay their 'get rich quick' prices.

I just saw an ad for Nouvelle express in Massapequa that is advertising free trial for brides on wednesdays and thursdays until August...Just thought I'd give everyone a heads up! I've gotten my hair done there in the past, and they do a very nice job.

I just think its funny that everyone dishes out thousands and thousands of dollars to reception halls,photographers,bands,videographers etc. without batting an eyelash- but when it comes time to pay for a service that is detail oriented and time consuming, everyone wants to complain. If looking your best is about a bargain, then go see a stylist who will fit your budget. What your sister charges might be more than other stylists out there, but would you call her greedy?

well my maid of honor is doing my makeup and FH's godfather is doing my hair so I am not paying for either.. i refuse to pay money for these things especially the trials when i need money for gas to get back and forth to work myself
