Bellmore vs. North Bellmore

Anyone know the difference between the 2? Chris and I are starting to look in the south shore area for a house and we don't know anything about a lot of the areas. Is North better or worse? Feel free to FM me if you don't want to post. Thanks ladies.

Re: Bellmore vs. North Bellmore

I'm sorry I meant is north bellmore better or worse than bellmore for some reason. Why do house prices vary between the 2 areas?

Re: Bellmore vs. North Bellmore

Ok.. i used to live there soooo...

North Bellmore is from the East Meadow border down to about Sunrise Hwy. A little more $$$$ (on the more secluded streets) but EXCELLENT elementary schools and fire depts. Closer to parkway and important shopping (supermarkets, banks, post office, CVS, etc.)

Bellmore is from Sunrise Hwy. down to Merrick Rd. The least expensive of the 3 Bellmore's.... different elementary school district. Not a bad area by any means, but either North or South is a better choice. It's a PAIN IN THE A$$ to get to some of the major roads from the Bellmore section because the traffic is so **** bad!!

South Bellmore - ridiculously $$$$$$ and HORRIBLE SCHOOLS!!!! I can't see how anyone can justify living there sometimes.... I even know of parents paying off the H.S. teachers to pass their kids... JMO though.

Re: Bellmore vs. North Bellmore

I live in S Bellmore and I have to agree about the schools. They are highly rated but horrible in the sense that this is 'Amy Fisher' land. My daughter is in 3rd grade with cell phones, destination bar mitvah/confirmation parties, drugs are rampant in the high school (too much $$$ no supervision). I am very sorry that I moved here. We will be looking in Massapequa and Wantagh/Seaford soon.

N. Bellmore has nice schools and good people. Just make sure you get zoned for Mepham High School and not Calhoun. Calhoun has some violence issues.

Good Luck!

We are actually focusing more on the wantagh & massapequa area also. But I just didn't know the difference in the Bellmores.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

Re: Bellmore vs. North Bellmore

Stay in district 23 in both Massapequa and Wantagh. They have great schools with a small teacher/student ratio.

Re: Bellmore vs. North Bellmore

I grew up in N. Bellmore and graduated from Mepham (a while ago )

Anyway, my sister is living in S. Bellmore and has kids who graduated and still are in Kennedy. She said that as it stands now, of the 3 HS in district, Calhoun would be # 1, Mepham # 2, and Kennedy # 3.

It was not always like that. When I went Calhoun and Kennedy would have been switched.

All 3 are still very good schools, but things do change here and there.

Re: Bellmore vs. North Bellmore

The 'snot' factor at Kennedy is just disgusting! If I won the lotto, I joke about hiring a nanny but these people seriously are so removed from their childrens everyday activities. That is why they are so out of control.

Re: Bellmore vs. North Bellmore

I just went thru a lot of that investigation myself. I just moved to South Bellmore and looked in both north and south and in between. The homes are expensive but I got more for my money than what I would have gotten if I bought in other North Shore towns that I was interested in. So far I love the neighborhood and have not been hit with the 'snob' factor I hear so much about (that was a huge fear of mine!)...but it has only been a month. My house is not on the water (or man-made canals whatever they are)....I think North Bellmore tends to be less expensive and more reasonable than the southern part (if you can call LI house market reasonable) but I did look at homes that were more than what I paid in North bellmore and they were much older! So who knows! I think style of homes are different - from what I saw there are more colonials and capes in the north and more splanches and ranches in the south. (Although I have a colonial in the south!)

Be careful of school districts in North bellmore - you want to be zoned for Bellmore or Merrick schools from what I hear.

I did hear the South Bellmore schools are snobby but I hear they are very good. My aunt said even with the snobby factor if she could afford to live in the area she would because the education is suppose to be very highly rated. I actually hear good things about Kennedy's education programs (I live walking distance from it) above the other hs's so I guess it is who you ask! It can be very subjective. I plan to raise my kids when I have them not to be yuppie/jappy snobs and hope it works! LOL

Here is one article I have that ranks some of the schools (I bet there are many out there that say all types of stuff)
http://stacks.msnbc.com/news/912995.asp?0cb=-215157201

You can FM me if you have any questions being I jsut went thru some of the same stuff as you!

Good Luck to you!

Re: Bellmore vs. North Bellmore

I grew up in Merrick which is right next to Bellmore and went to high school at Kennedy in South Bellmore. Yes, it's snobby, yes kids drive expensive cars but there ARE nice people there. As far as SAT's Kennedy ranked better than Calhoun- not sure about mepham. I know there are alot of stereotypes and Amy Fisher things but it was a good school and none of my friends were the stereotypical kids who you're thinking of.

Re: Bellmore vs. North Bellmore

All of this info is great. Thank you so much everyone.

Does anyone know how I can find out for certain which school district the house is in? I know the realtor tells you, but how do you verify that info?I just have nightmares that we're going to be told one thing and then at the closing we'll find out something else.

Re: Bellmore vs. North Bellmore

It's on the title report with the district number. South Bellmore is #7. Massapequa is #23 and Wantagh is a different #23.

Re: Bellmore vs. North Bellmore

We just looked at a house in North Bellmore and we're thinking about making an offer, but we're not sure. Does anyone know which school district #4 is? Is that one of the good ones? I'm really just so lost in this area.

Re: Bellmore vs. North Bellmore

Bellmore is more expensive than N. Bellmore, because it is adjacent to parts of levittown and East Meadow. The houses are generally bigger in Bellmore also, but not necessarily. In general, they are both great neighborhoods & have really good schools. The little shopping disctricts are also nice in both
