Bustle's, the good, the bad, the ugly

Well, my dress is in. I always thought I would get the traditional bustle, but when I went for my 1st consult Phyllis said you will see the buttons, but I also remember hearing (I think) that a french makes it a pain to sit! So I wanted some advice from past brides....What did you love/hate/wish you change about your bustle? Give me all the details! TIA

Re: Bustle's, the good, the bad, the ugly

My only advice about Bustles.

Is Make sure they put enough buttons or snaps or whatever they have to do.

My bustle didn't even last 5 minutes before someone stepped on the back of the gown and the bustle buttons were flying off.

I couldn't dance they way I wanted to because I was either holding up my gown or had it thrown over my arm.

I finally asked the bridal attendant to safety pin the gown up....and That worked.

Re: Bustle's, the good, the bad, the ugly

I don't know what my bustle was called, but it had about 5 or 6 ribbons underneath the skirt, and it held beautifully.. in fact its still tied up today, almost a year later

Re: Bustle's, the good, the bad, the ugly

I think my bustle was called the french bustle (it was kind of like 'pick'up's' on the back of the dress) and I loved it!!!!!!!!!!! I got so many compliments on my bustle, it looked so great! Phyllis did my alterations also. I loved my bustle. I think I might have a pic in my album, but it is not the best picture.

Re: Bustle's, the good, the bad, the ugly

I had a standard bustle which seemed like it would be simple enough to do at my fitting, but when it came to the wedding night, it was impossible. My bridal attendant was great for the most part but she did it totally wrong. The buttons were a royal pain. It looked ok but didn't come out the way it was supposed to. By that time though, I didn't care. I was just eager to get out on the dance floor!!

Re: Bustle's, the good, the bad, the ugly

avoid getting a bustle that requires buttons or snaps, I have seen them pop off time and time again.

I would recm'd getting ANY type of bustle, as long as it is done from underneath and with strings.

I had a traditional bustle so you can see all of the detailing on the back. I wanted a french bustle but it didn't look right.

Do you have a choice of bustles or the dresses already have them?

I originally wanted a French bustle, but when we tried it with my dress it didn't look right. I am getting a regular bustle.

Re: Bustle's, the good, the bad, the ugly

bustle is only needed if you have a trail of fabric behind you. I am probably going to get a string bustle if possible this way no buttons because i am scared they will pop and then i am stuck with my train (even though its not long). If that doesn't work out then a simple three button just to hold the fabric.

Re: Bustle's, the good, the bad, the ugly

I think it really all depends on what type of style dress you have, some dresses are so heavy, especially under the dress, mine is so light, but under is very very heavy, she had to put in 18 areas to bustle up, its going to be a pain for my girls to put it up, but once its up, thats it.........Im set for the night, I hope anyway!!

Re: Bustle's, the good, the bad, the ugly

I had a traditional bustle. It looked very pretty and was comfortable when sitting. However when DH stepped on it, it broke! The button didn't pop off, but the loop broke. Bring saftey pins with you and a sewing kit just in case (my friend had to sew her bustle the day of the wedding to stay up, she had the ties).

I found this description somewhat useful in understanding how the bustles work...

I had a 10 point french bustle and I had no problems whatsoever (it was up with strings and it held up all night).
