Choosing Paints

Since we are about to move into our first ever home all I have been thinking about is what colors I want to paint all the rooms!!!

Does anyone know anything about certain brands of paint?? Does it really matter which brand you choose, or do you just choose a brand based on what colors are available??

Re: Choosing Paints

I know lots of ladies on this site are fans of Benjamin Moore for its quality.

We used Behr and we were really happy with it (we sort of live in the sticks now and Home Depot is the closest store that sells paint!). Behr has a huge variety of colors and we've been really happy with how all the rooms came out so far.

I HATE Benjamin Moore. My current landlord swears by it, but I cannot stand it. It does not really 'coat' the walls at all. You can see the difference between the rooms we painted and the room he painted. The ones he painted are peeling and cracking, etc. The rooms that we painted look beautiful! (We have plaster walls.)

Oh...the paint we HIGHLY recommend...Behr!!! The BEST in our book!

Re: Choosing Paints

i am currently having the same problem choosing... people seem to love benjamin moore however my mom suggested looking into the line they carry at lowes that starts with a v as the professional company that has an excellent reputation by her just switched to that line for professional use.

Re: Choosing Paints

i love benjamin moore- i think the colors are so vivid and true to what you expect them to be. i also found they coat the walls extrememly well. my contractor would only use BM paints. i dont think you will be disappointed. with paint, you really get what you pay for.

Re: Choosing Paints

We have used only Benjamin Moore on our house so far and I love every single color we have used. FH did most of the painting, but it came out beautifully.

I used it in my co-op as well and when I sold it after 2.5 years everyone said it was in mint condition.

My sister just used Behr in her bathroom and, personally, I didn't like the end result.

I didn't like the consistency. The coverage looks uneven in areas. I don't think it was my sister's fault as she did a great job in other rooms using Benjamin Moore.

Re: Choosing Paints

I have used Behr, RL and Benjamin Moore. I had no problem with any of them. I think BM goes on smoother - a little easier to work with but I don't think you can tell which rooms I sure Behr and which I used BM. I go by what color I like. Although recently we used that BM washable paint - the one where you can easily wash - and boy does it scratch easily - we won't use that again.

I have to ask, what color did you make your living room? It looks like the color we want to make our bedroom.

Edited for grammar!

Re: Choosing Paints

I like Benjamin Moore, and Home Depots Behr pain isn't too bad either. A gallon of Benjamin Morre is a bit more $$. You can got to home depot with your Benjamin Moore swatch and they will mix the exact same color for you.

Re: Choosing Paints

Preperation is 90 percent of a good paint job. Proper priming, spackling, sanding and caulking has the ability to make a poor quality paint look great. I have used so many different brands of paints for so many different applications that I could not possibly remember them all. For faux finishes I like the Behr process from HD. For priming I use Kilz 2 for exterior or BM Fresh Start. On new drywall I use PVA Primer. New color on old wall I tint the primer (BM undercoat) with the color that I will be painting the room with then apply two finish coats. I have never had any problems.
