We are having our Engagement Party at a town rec hall...Something like the Ronkonkoma Pavillion is nice, it's right on Lake Ronkonkoma.

Yes, or Knights of Columbus. Even some churches rent halls. Call your town hall too, they know what's in their town.

Huntington Townhouse allows outside catering. Most hotels allow you to cater in also, for example Huntington Hilton.

our wedding was in the community room of a condo complex in NJ.... beautiful room, right on the river with a wall of windows looking out onto the water and a deck for people to hang out on during coctail hour. we found a great caterer that included a lot- even covered the cost of the hall rental.... so maybe you could try condo/apartment complexes, too.....
