My Review 12/7/13: Inn at NHP, JayLim, Timepiece, Kleinfeld, Colonial Flower Shop, Camelot , Viana, AMDA, Here Comes the Bridesmaid, Sandra Baldini, Angela's Hair Design, Judge Corbett

Our wedding was a great day, though not without some (major) bumps in the road. The Wednesday before the big day my father was hospitalized for what they thought was a heart attack. On Thursday, when the doctors had little idea what was going on and there was no discharge date in sight we started to panic. Obviously, my dad’s health was first priority, but the prospect of not having a wedding you’ve been planning for a year and a half is kind of devastating. Having it without my father was not an option. On Friday morning, the doctor said he “might” be out by the next day, depending on test results. Luckily (I suppose) the idiot doctor couldn’t keep track of what meds he was giving and the test couldn’t be done that day, so they sent him home. I now had a pile of things to do and somehow got most of them done in time. What didn’t get done didn’t matter anymore. Nothing mattered anymore, except having my dad there. Our rehearsal dinner was cancelled and the night before the wedding ended up like any other night. My (now) husband and I stayed in our apartment that night to get things done and when I got hungry we went out to a Mexican restaurant for dinner and pigged out. Not traditional, but we have decided our anniversary tradition will be Mexican food every December 6th!

The moral of the story is, you can’t plan for everything and you just have to roll with it and realize what is really important. If anything, this whole ordeal made me almost calmer….I wasn’t focused on the wedding anymore, I was focused on my dad and as long as the wedding happened, the details didn’t matter so much anymore.

Closing the loop, my dad trooped through the wedding, though he felt absolutely horrible he wasn’t missing it and that’s all the mattered to him. Monday morning, he went back to a (different) hospital, got a stent in his heart and got home Tuesday morning. He’s feeling much better and really wishes he could get his hands back on the filet mignon he couldn’t eat at the wedding!

LIW: A+

I know everyone says it, but I don’t know what I would have done without this site. This is the only site that I found to be helpful (I hate the knot) because no one does weddings like LI does weddings. Ideas on how to decorate a barn for my reception or paint mason jars were of no use to me. I would not have found a lot of my vendors, been able to negotiate pricing, or known what a Channa plaque was without you girls, so THANK YOU!

My E-ring/wedding band- Diamond District: A+

FH used his mom’s jeweler for my e-ring and band. He said he got an excellent deal and the ring is stunning. He has the card somewhere, so if anyone wants the info, I’m happy to get it to you.

FH’s band- Spexton (Etsy): A+

FH wanted a titanium band, something classic with a tiny bit of character. We browsed some jewelry stores, but all pushed gold or platinum. I saw this band on Etsy and loved it….luckily he did, too so I ordered it. Nate was super helpful with sizing and it arrived quickly and was packaged beautifully.

Shower-Nick’s Bistro: A+

My mom threw me an amazing shower at my favorite restaurant in Forest Hills. Everything was simple and beautiful and as always, the food was delish and the service was the best. If you’re ever in Forest Hills, make it a point to stop in there- really amazing food!

Shower/Groom’s Cake- Dream Cakes (Cortlandt Manor): A+

I know it’s highly unlikely that you’ll ever need a cake from Northern Westchester, but my aunt got my shower cake from there and it both gorgeous and delish. Since my rehearsal dinner was supposed to be in Westchester, I ordered the Grooms cake from there so my aunt could pick it up on her way. They were very accommodating with the flavors I wanted and reasonably priced. Since the RD ended up being cancelled, my aunt picked it up on her way to the wedding and we displayed it at the reception. It was super yummy!

Attire

Dress-Kleinfeld: A+

There is a reason everyone goes there and that they have a tv show…..love them or hate them, they have more dresses than anywhere else in the world. I tried on about 50 dresses at shops on LI and just couldn’t commit. I had a very clear picture in my head of what I wanted and nothing was coming close. I went to Kleinfeld and the second dress I tried on was the one. It was a Kleinfeld exclusive, so it’s a good thing I ended up there! I had Paula as a consultant and she was fabulous. The dress came in without any problems. I had Mariella as my fitter and she was great. They are a well oiled machine and while, no, you will not be getting a ton of personalized attention you will get a perfect dress and great service.

Veil- Kleinfeld: A+

I love my veil, but I did feel a bit pressured into it right after I chose my dress. It was the one aspect of Kleinfeld I wasn’t thrilled with…..I didn’t appreciate being accosted by the accessories girls right after I said yes. At the end of the day, the veil matched perfectly so it was ok. The only issue was that there was a beaded edge and it kept getting stuck to the crystals on my dress. I do still wonder how much cheaper I could have gotten it at Barron’s though!

BM Dresses- Here Comes the Bridesmaid: A+

I love this place and highly, highly recommend. Their prices simply cannot be beat, not by RK or anywhere on the island. The girl we worked with in the store was a sweetheart and the dresses came in a full month early. They also operate bridesmaids.com, but I went to the brick and mortar store because I am in the city every day. I would guess they’re just as great online as they are in person.

MOB Dress-Totally You: D

What a mess. I kept touting them on here and eventually came to regret it. First issue: After much deliberation, my mom falls in love with a dress and orders. She gets a phone call a WEEK later that it’s been discontinued. Ok, so back to square one. She goes back and chooses another dress, orders it in platinum with JET BLACK beading. In the interim, as a surprise, I order her custom black crystal heels and a matching clutch. Dress comes in but my mom can’t get there for several weeks because she broke her ankle and can’t drive and is in a big boot. I call them to let them know about this and they cheerfully tell me no worries, they’ll hold it (which they did). In this interim I order her black crystal custom flats cause she’s now unsteady in heels because of her ankle. We finally go for her to start alterations and the dress is platinum with platinum beading. $500 in shoes/clutch later the damn dress doesn’t match the accessories. Perhaps something they could have mentioned when I called them….something like “hey, FYI, dress doesn’t have black beading, as clearly written on your receipt, thought you should know since you paid for it and it’s wrong.” My mom is the nicest person alive and doesn’t want to argue, so I explained that this is not what she ordered and that their job, as a business is to correct the mistake. Nope, not happening, first because this is what the company considers black (I am not blind, I know the difference between black and gray) and then because the dress doesn’t come with black beading. Interesting, since I was there when you told both of us that it came with black beading. At the end of the day, the mistake was not fixed. They gave her a jacket AND a wrap, but I think that’s because they ordered the jacket and she wanted a wrap. They are blatantly incompetent and it appears that they are going out of business, which is no surprise because they’re terrible.

DOJ/Headband- Wedding Factory Direct: A+

I ordered earrings, a bracelet and a headband on this site and half expected them to look cheap and be out $100. I was WRONG. The stuff is beautiful and not cheap looking at all! I am positive I have seen the exact pieces on the websites of some popular bridal accessory retailers at quite a markup. I am so happy I was able to save some money on this stuff!

Shoes- Amazon: A+ I guess…it’s Amazon!

I saw a pair of shoes I liked at a bridal shoe store for $100. I thought “hmm, that’s a good price.” I don’t know why, but I didn’t buy them. I went home that night and found the exact same shoes on Amazon for $35. Now that’s a bargain!!!

MOB Shoes/Clutch- MDNY (Etsy): B+

This is where I ordered my mom’s custom shoes, clutch, which she still used and coordinated with black crystal jewelry. They were good, though a couple crystals came off when the shoes were removed from the box, though they sent extras with glue. Very professional, though their sizing was off and my mom’s flats were too big on her (she got insoles). If you’re looking for super blingy shoes without completely breaking the bank, I definitely recommend.

Tuxes- Esquire Tuxedo, Merrick: B-

I had a very good experience when I spoke with anyone there, but DH not so much. With all the terrible reviews floating around, Men’s Wearhouse was out. We needed a place that was open on Sundays, and Esquire was. DH liked the tuxes they showed him so we went with them. He returned with his dad to make a final decision and said the woman who helped him wasn’t terribly friendly. We were hoping that being a small business they would allow some flexibility with pick-up/drop-off, but they weren’t. Also, they were not open the day after the wedding (a Sunday) and told DH the tuxes had to be dropped off on Monday. We were on a plane to Australia and all of the groomsmen were at work. My FIL had to drive from Westchester to drop off everyone’s tux. They were one of the many businesses we dealt with who had no concept of having a full-time job in the city and ended up not delivering on the one reason we chose them over others. The tuxes were very nice, though.

Save the Dates- 76thStreetInk (Etsy): A+

We did ADORABLE magnets with cartoon versions of ourselves and our dogs for our STDs. Beka was a pleasure to work with, especially since I drove her crazy with 200 questions. Everyone loved the magnets!

Invites- You’re Invited to Celebrate: B-

I originally thought I wanted super simple invites on high end paper. When I went to look at invites both my mom and FH told me what I liked was boring and that my second choice (gold cardstock with black font) was not ok since we weren’t having a Willy Wonka themed wedding (oh the abuse!) So, we settled on double layer with shimmer cardstock and 4 crystals dotting the border. My invitations were BEAUTIFUL when they came out of the box. Really beautiful. However, many guests did not receive them in such beautiful condition because some of the crystals fell off. I expressed this concern to the shop before mailing and was told that “any invites going to LI would be fine.” GREAT, however, most of my guests don’t live on LI so that was pretty useless reassurance. I had them hand cancelled (watched the clerk do them) and was told that they still go through machines for barcoding and unfortunately there was no other way to deliver them. IMHO, this should be accounted for by the people who make the invites (they should be aware of how the PO works) and they should do a better job of securing any decorations. I know it’s just paper and they served their purpose with or without the crystals, but the fact of the matter is I paid a lot of money for that paper so it infuriated me when they arrived less than perfect.

DOC- A Modern Day Affair: A+

Laura and Rosalyn were AWESOME. Laura was super helpful and accommodating with appointments (it was nice to deal with someone who understood that sometimes you just can’t meet until 8pm on a Tuesday). They helped calm my nerves, kept certain people away from me, got me into my poofy dress, cleaned a massive spill off my dress at CH and fixed my disastrously decorated cake. I don’t like being the center of attention and having my friends and family hovering over me can make me more stressed. I loved the fact that they swooped me into the other room to get me ready. I realized I was chatting with them more than my bridesmaids at one point and that’s because I needed some calm and to be taken out of the limelight. They really were my sanity. I really can’t say enough good things and was so, so happy to have them there. Girls, do not hesitate to spend the money here…..and beg Laura to come back quickly after having her little munchkin!

Hair- Angela’s Hair Design: A+

I booked Angela before I even had a trial based on her reviews and I’m glad I did. She is a sweetheart and was patient when I had no idea how I wanted my hair. I wear my hair down every day. If I wear it up twice a year it’s a lot and I feel borderline uncomfortable with it up. We tried it down and it just wasn’t working….I looked like a little kid with the headband I ordered and paired with a ballgown it would have been a little too Disney princess for my taste. She put it up and with the headband and earrings it looked great. She also did a great job with all my girls.

Makeup- Sandra Baldini: A+

Sandra is a ball of energy and it really shows that she loves what she does. I wanted my makeup to be a little more dramatic than usual (I don’t wear heavy makeup, but I’m definitely not a no-makeup kind of girl) and Sandra did a great job at my trial (I only went to her). She made my girls look fabulous as well and she is SO reasonably priced!

Officiant: Bill Corbett A+

DH and I are interfaith, and neither of us are overly religious, so we decided to keep it simple and go with a judge. Bill was a sweetheart, super accommodating when it came to meeting with us, and delivered exactly the ceremony we were looking for- simple, short, straight to the point. We were very, very happy with him!

Band- Timepiece (Franklin Wayne): A+

There aren’t a ton of reviews on them, but Timepiece was AMAZING. They kept everyone dancing and I can’t even tell you how many compliments we got. Frank and Rasheeda were very accommodating when one of the band members left and I needed someone who could sing some rock. They did play a song I had on my no-play list, but not a big deal. They were extremely well-priced and I highly, highly recommend them.

Limos/Shuttle- Camelot: D

I went straight to Camelot based on reviews and the fact that I did not have time to visit a bunch of limo companies. We booked a pick-up/drop-off in a 12 passenger Navigator and a 14 passenger shuttle for the hotel guests. They ended up switching out the 14 passenger for a 12 passenger Navigator (I’m guessing the one we had used earlier in the day). While this isn’t a huge difference, it did allow for fewer people to be transported and it wasn’t what we had booked. Apparently, everything ended up being held up by 2 guests who demanded that the first shuttle wait for them, thus delaying everything for the rest of the night (I’ve heard some contradictory stories from guests). I would have told the guests to shove it, but the driver just hung around instead. According to the guests who were on this shuttle, he didn’t seem to care if he ever left. The hold up ended up meaning that we had a large group of guests who took a cab and walked in halfway through the ceremony, which was embarrassing. No guest should be paying for anything. When I spoke with them after the wedding, their attitude was basically “well, too late now,” which was irritating. I assume others don’t deal with this because they’re reviews are great. Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience.

Flowers- Colonial Flower Shop: B

I was so happy with my decision to go with Colonial and I was disappointed the day of. The bouquets were fine. The corsages and bouts were nice enough. I had them spruce up the ceremony flowers that the Inn provided, and they looked nice. The real trouble, however, was the ballroom. My centerpieces did not look quite like the sample. They were full of baby’s breath (I hate baby’s breath) and the branches were painted gold….an idea I had tossed around at first and then quickly changed. They were skimpier than the sample and had cheaper flowers (they weren’t putting anything past me, I used to work in a florist). The CPs were all white…..actually all of my flowers were all white. At the base of the CP stands were red rose petals. I did not ask for this on the tables and they looked absolutely ridiculous with the all white flowers. Melvin, our matire’d had his staff remove them before anyone came into the room. The real kicker was the cake. We paid $225 for 75 roses to decorate the cake. I had the bakery separate each tier with 3 inch columns and the plan was to fill the space with the roses. The owner measured the roses for me the week before and they would fill the space perfectly. I even showed a photo as an example. Well, whoever set up the cake stuck the roses directly into the cake, leaving all the space between the tiers and covering half the cake. They couldn’t be removed because then there would be giant holes in the cake. Luckily, the bridal attendants and the AMDA girls swiped some hydrangea from the ceremony to fill in the space, so in the end it didn’t look terrible. On top of this (literally), they didn’t put roses on top of the cake. The attendant had to use my throw bouquet to do this, so the roses didn’t match. We also did not get 75 roses- we got 32.
I called the owner when we got back from our honeymoon and he was extremely apologetic and sent me 3 dozen roses and a refund for the cake flowers. I have never, ever heard a bad thing about Colonial, so I honestly think I was a fluke. I would not let this deter you from using them.

Photo/Video- Jay Lim: A+

Jay is the nicest guy ever and he and his staff were awesome whenever we visited the studio and even more awesome the day of. I am incredibly hypercritical of myself in pictures so saying I’m picky is a huge understatement. We took our e-pics in Central Park on what might have been the hottest day of the summer. This showed in the pics- I looked like a drowned rat. Needless to say, I wasn’t happy with them, which isn’t Jay’s fault, he can’t control the weather. The wedding photos were nice. Something I did notice….Jay’s photos are extremely “clear” (I don’t know the photographer term). That’s great and all, but they show every single imperfection. There are photos of me with acne scars I don’t notice on a regular basis magnified, back fat, visible pores on DH, etc. I actually had them take down some of the photos in the online gallery because I didn’t want people seeing them. They did say they would edit whatever I like though, so the poor guy is going to have a long list!
I do think the video came out great though. To be honest, I was a little worried about seeing it cause I’m so particular, but I was very pleasantly surprised.

Venue- The Inn at New Hyde Park: A+

If you asked me a year and a half ago what I thought about the Inn at NHP, you probably would have gotten a different response. We had a rocky start, but once the first BM we had left, it was smooth sailing and everything was amazing on the day of. Katie and Janine were super helpful and lets face it, the place is insanely gorgeous. Their menu is incredible and the food was delish. They didn’t flinch when we traded menu items out and they even did an apple stuffed pork chop at my dad’s request. In addition to the regular CH menu (which is more than enough) we had the mashed potato bar, miniature station (a HUGE hit), shrimp display (literally barrels of shrimp) and the martini bar. I had joked that I wanted the ice luge at the martini bar to look like a penguin or something Christmassy and they said they didn’t think they could. Lo and behold, it was carved into a sleigh and was totally adorable! Donna and Kathy were my bridal attendants and they were fabulous, not just to me but to the bridal party as well. Melvin was our matire’d and was great. He helped fix all the details that weren’t right before the reception (which were no fault of the Inn at all, the florist left a path of destruction throughout the room) and was just an all around nice guy. The Viennese was incredible and well worth it. We had it in the room because we only had 140 people, which I recommend because it doesn’t take people away from the music. The bridal suite is HUGE and they had a fabulous spread when we arrived. They also let DH and the guys get ready at the bed & breakfast next door, and provided snacks and drinks. Who else does that? He said they were absolutely amazing. I really can’t say enough wonderful things. I am definitely going to have other functions there in the future and if you’re considering them as a venue, run, don’t walk. They are truly amazing and you won’t be sorry. Coming from me, that means a lot, because as you can tell from my review I have absurdly high expectations.

Hotel- The Viana Hotel and Spa: B for the hotel staff; A+ for the brunch

We chose the Viana for 2 reasons- it was nice and the other option was by Roosevelt Field, which the first weekend of December is a traffic nightmare. At first we were a little annoyed…..I called with the credit card info to hold our suite in case it wasn’t comped because I explicitly told them I didn’t want to email them credit card info. Well, they proceeded to send the confirmation back with the entire cc number, exp. date, security code, etc. Not too bright. The rooming list they sent me also had everyone’s name spelled incorrectly and I had to call them multiple times because they weren’t giving the discounted rate after we had 15 rooms booked (still within the month mark). The day of, I heard from multiple guests that the staff told them they had overbooked and asked if they minded being sent to another hotel. I take major issue with this- first, how hard is it to book the number of rooms you have and second, I was the only wedding there that had a breakfast booked the next morning. I was PAYING them (a good amount of money, too) for a service the next day and their plan was to send my guests off so they couldn’t attend?? Everyone wound up staying there, so I don’t know what ultimately happened on their end.
Erin was a pleasure to deal with (none of the problems originated with her). The rooms are beautiful. The breakfast the next morning was fabulous, and worth the money. They did an awesome job (so much food!) and the room was beautifully decorated for Christmas.

Little Stuff

Name plaque/Ring Bearer sign- Channa, MySweetMemories: A+

The reviews are true, Channa is awesome! My plaque and sign came out perfectly!

Matchboxes- The Knot: A
I got them on sale and they looked like they were supposed to, so no complaints.

Cake Topper- WedSet (Etsy): A+
I got FH an adorable Knicks cake topper. Poor guy yessed me to death for a year and a half, the least I could do was get him a cake topper! WedSet was great, shipped quickly and sent a free garter along with the topper.

Place Cards/Martini Bar signs- zuCards: A+

Nazli was AWESOME and super patient with my million changes. The place cards and signs were gorgeous and very high quality. They were also extremely reasonably priced.

Door Hangers/OOT notes- JonesStreetPress (Etsy): A+

Chrissy is awesome! I ordered door hangers for the OOT bags on a whim in August and when I contacted her for matching notes, she coordinated them perfectly without me saying a thing!

BM name hangers-HangerDesignCenter (Etsy): A+

Shannen is a doll- shipped SUPER fast and the hangers are beautiful. She’s also located on LI, so I was happy to support a local business!

Various Paper Goods- Vistaprint: A+

Who doesn’t love Vistaprint? I got the labels for my To-Go boxes, tags for my slipper basket, engagement gift thank you’s, brunch invites and my mom got my shower invites/thank you’s. Last time I tried to use a Groupon with the Retail Me Not code, it wouldn’t work no matter how many times I tried, so I think they’ve wised up. Either way, the stuff is super cheap and nice quality.

To-Go Boxes/OOT Bags- PaperMart.com: A+

I’m a weirdo and could totally browse on papermart for hours. They have SO MUCH stuff! They had the best prices for my gable boxes and OOT bags. Shipped insanely fast and quality was great!

Honeymoon- Australia and New Zealand: A+

We spent two weeks jetting around the east coast of Australia and both the North and South islands of New Zealand. We pet koalas, fed kangaroos and emus, saw the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge, snorkeled in the Great Barrier Reef, hiked through rainforests, visited the Blue Mountains, Milford Sound, Waiheke island and ate more fish and chips than anyone should in a lifetime.
We spent 4 nights in Sydney (Sheraton on the Park-beautiful), which may have been a tad too long (we are New Yorkers after all). Saw the bridge, opera house, Olympic Village, and went on a day trip to the Blue Mountains and Featherdale Wildlife Preserve. We also saw a Christmas fireworks show (they LOVE Christmas, those Aussies.) We then flew to Port Douglas, on the north coast for 4 nights. It is a beautiful, upscale little beach town with tons of restaurants and shops. We stayed at the Shantara Resort & Spa, in a 1 bedroom suite, which was a 2 minute walk to the beach. The suite was huge, with a living room, full kitchen, dining area, king bedroom, gigantic bathroom with Jacuzzi and an enormous balcony. It was from there that we took a boat out to snorkel the reef. I am not a swimmer (seriously, I wore a life jacket and had 2 noodles) but it was the most incredible sight. I’ve decided I never have to snorkel again because really, once you see the Great Barrier Reef what else is there? Then we visited the Daintree Rainforest, which is the oldest in the world. I got heaps of mosquito bites, but it was beautiful.
Then we headed to New Zealand. We spent 2 nights in Auckland, at the Rendevous Grand, which was basic but nice. Auckland I could take or leave. If you do make a trip to this part of the world, you can probably skip Auckland. From there we did take a ferry to Waiheke island, which has the prettiest beaches I’ve ever seen. Aside from that, Auckland was very eh. After Auckland, we make our way down to Queenstown on the South Island. It was the most unbelievably beautiful place I’ve ever seen. We stayed at the Pounamu Apartments in a 1 bedroom corner suite…..a balcony and wall of windows looking directly at the mountains and lake. We would put the fireplace on and just stare out the windows. Amazing. The town is also adorable and filled with restaurants and shops and a place where you can get giant chocolate chip cookies all day (what’s better than that?) It was from here that we visited Milford Sound, which was beautiful, though we went on the last day and after 2 weeks of looking at other beautiful places, this wasn’t worth the 4 hour drive IMO. Everyone else loves it though, so maybe that’s just me.
Needless to say, we were EXHAUSTED. This was not your typical honeymoon. Relaxing it was not, but it was absolutely amazing. It really was a once in a lifetime trip and while I cannot lie, it was outrageously expensive, it was worth it. If you’re considering a similar trip, I highly recommend Joanne Morgan at Aspire Down Under. She was so knowledgeable and helpful. We’re going to have to live off spaghetti and dollar menu McDonalds for the next year, but it really was a dream honeymoon.

Great review and congrats! It is such a shame that happened to your dad but thank goodness he is alright. I was a mess when something like that happened to my dad, I couldn't imagine if it was days before my wedding. You must be strong!

Great review! Thank you for taking the time to post this & for sending me the link to your amazing video. It came out awesome & it just made me THAT much more excited to have JayLim do ours. I am so happy that your dad is ok & that he was able to make the wedding. My dad recently had stents put in too & it's a scary situation & even more stressful right before your wedding. His health should only get better from here on out just make sure he takes it easy & takes care of himself. Congrats to you & your husband! I am looking forward to seeing your pictures :)
