Our Amazing October 8th 2011 Wedding NOW WITH PRO PICS!!

First I want to say a big huge grateful thank you to LIW for being such a wonderful resource and outlet for the last 16 months of wedding planning. I definitely got some great ideas from my fellow brides and was inspired to be more creative than I would have been without LIW.

Proposal: We got engaged on July 17th, 2010 in Las Vegas. It was pure Brian, very romantic and just slightly over the top, it was wonderful. My hubby took me to the Venetian, where we took a gondola ride. When we got in the gondola the gondola driver asked us if we were celebrating anything in particular and my hubby got down on one knee (well as best he could inside the boat lol) and asked me to marry him. When i said yes all the people standing around watching the gondolas go by cheered and the driver started to sing the love song from Lady and The Tramp. It was amazing!! After the gondola ride we went and saw Phantom and had dinner at Mario Battali's restaurant Carnivore. It was delicious and romantic and just the most amazing night. This night was an A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Engagement Ring: We went to together to look for rings in April of 2010. Even though we went together the ring he gave me, he actually picked out himself. We used Busy Bee Jewelers on Sunrise Highway in Massapequa. They were wonderful to work with. I would rate them an A+

Engagement Party and Photo Shoot: We had our Engagement Party and Engagement Photo Shoot the same day, October 23rd 2010. We took our photos during the day at Fort Totten. It was great, we definitely got the fall foliage feel I was looking for, and the photos by the bridge are especially nice since my hubby is a US merchant marine academy grad and you could see the school in the background.

Our party was at the East Meadow Benevolent Hall, part of the fire house. No complaints here. We catered it ourselves from Uncle Giuseppe's and the food was great. I did all the decor and favors myself. The favors we're caramel apples from Daffy Apples, they were great to use very fast and user friendly and delicious. Plus a great price. Also the flowers for the centerpieces were roses I ordered from Costco, great quality they lasted for a week after the party and the price was perfect.

Save the Dates: I ordered from WeddingPaperDivas.com they were great. Very fast and good quality. No complaints from me.

Invitations: I used Fairy Tale Affairs in Massapequa. I loved my invitations but there were definitely some issues. I spent more than i had budgeted on invites because in my personal opinion it was very important to me to have quality invites. Just a little background, I have spent a few years working in the print industry so I am very picky and particular. The ordering was great as was the customization and proofing, I ran into problems once the final product arrived. My issue was that the envelopes arrived completely covered in ink smudges. Apparently the calligrapher didn't think to let the envelopes dry before stacking them so all the ink smeared. In Fairy Tales defense they were very apologetic and did offer to redo all the envelopes but that would of taken a few weeks and that would mean mailing them out at a later date and not giving my guests enough time to RSVP. The solution we came to was to redo just the most egregious of the envelopes, using the extra. So only about 20 of the 125 envelopes were mailed out without at least some ink smudge.
These are pics of the proofs

and a pro pic

Bridal Shower: My Bridal shower was at Bob's Place in Floral Park. It was supposed to be the Sunday of the weekend of Hurricane Irene. Because of the hurricane we pushed it back to the following Wednesday night. It was a little unconventional to have a bridal shower on a weeknight but we made the best of it. It changed the whole feel of the party and felt more like a cocktail party or a big girls night out more so than a traditional daytime bridal shower. The food at Bob's is amazing, and the place is beautiful. Seems very Manhattan when you step inside. The service was wonderful. Everyone had great things to say about the shower. My mother and sisters did an amazing job. I helped too, I know its unconventional to be a part of planning your own bridal shower but it was fun for me to work on the DIY projects and plan with my mom. The favors were pashminas we ordered from http://www.nywholesalescarves.com/ and we also gave everyone little olive dishes that are from Kate Aspen. For the centerpieces we used valentines sweetheart candy to fill the vases and again used Costco for the roses. We bought the candy way in advance luckily it held up well in my garage for months. It was fine since it was just for decor and no one would eat the candy. Again I have nothing but praise for the Costco roses. They were gorgesous.

Bacherlorette Weekend: I had a joint party with my good friend who is getting married a few weeks after me. We went to AC on labor day weekend and stayed at the Tropicana. Because it was 2 of us we had a bunch of girls come for the weekend which made it great. The Tropicana is right on the boardwalk so it was ideal. We hung out at Trump's Beach Bar during the day, the drinks are strong and yummy and the music was pumping it was perfect. Friday night we went to Cuba Libre for dinner, the food was outstanding!! One of the best Cuban restaurants I've ever been to. After dinner we gambled a bit and went to the club inside the Tropicana, I cant remember the name but it was fun. On Saturday night we had dinner at Carmines, always delicious and family style worked great with such a large group (there were about 18 of us) and then to Mixx at the Borgata. Mixx was fun, definitely a club I would go back to.

Rehearsal/Rehearsal Dinner: Our rehearsal was the Friday night before. All went well and we had dinner afterwards at Angelinas in East Norwhich. The food there is outstanding. Seriously the best italian food on Long Island. My hubby's family as been regulars at Angelinas for years and they treated us amazing, really took care of us that night. It was a fabulous night.

The Wedding Day!
Hair: I went to my regular salon and my regular stylist did my hair. The salon is Hair Effex in Bellmore. I absolutely love the way my hair came out, it was even better than the trial. I would give it an A+

my 2 sisters and mother all used hair effex too and all looked beautiful

Makeup: I used Andrea from Lola Loves Makeup and she did a fantastic job. Here are pics from my trial and the wedding day both came out equally beautiful. I unfortunately dont have a great close up pic of my finished wedding day makeup, but trust me it was flawless. I would give Andrea an A+

Day of Hoodie: I ordered from JustJen. It was a complete breeze I would definitely recommend it to future brides. Its just a fun little extra to have, plus it came in handy on the freezing honeymoon flight.

Wedding Gown: My gown was a Demetrios and it was stunning. I ordered from Village Bridal and they were excellent to work with. My only complaint would be that 2 days before the wedding I went to pick up the gown and thank god my mother pressured me to try it on. The alterations weren't done or weren't done correctly because the gown was still too big. They quickly took in the top free of any additional charges and they were very apologetic. I would still highly recommend Village Bridal and their alterations department. The hem was done flawlessly and none of the intricate details of the dress were damaged. Hopefully once I get my pro pics I will have better full length shots of the dress. But here are some shots that really show off the detail.

Veil and headband: I had my veil made custom from Barron's and I also bought my headband from them. No complaints whatsoever, the service was great and the quality equally as great. Not a reflection on Barron's but my cathedral veil did tear during our reveal photoshoot before the ceremony I tried not to let it get to me because I was just so happy to be getting married I didnt care. It is a shame though since the veil is so stunning. The veil is a single layer cathedral length with lace and pearl appliques lining the edge. Its a little different than a standard mantilla. The headband is a crystal headband that originally had a white ribbon tie. Barron's changed out the ribbon to an elastic that had a bracelet hook closure. It was very easy to secure in my hair and stayed all day and night thanks to lots of bobby pins.

Reception Veil: I always wanted a birdcage veil. This ended up being a point of contention between my traditional family and myself. Plus my groom's only request was we get married in his family's church and I wear a traditional veil. So i honored that request by wearing a beautiful cathedral length veil for the ceremony. For the reception however I embraced my more creative side and purchased a birdcage veil with attached feather fascinator. I ordered from WeddingFactoryDirect. I had no issues with them other than that my veil became backordered so it took just over 3 months for it to come in. I would recommend ordering way in advance if using them. Below is the photo of the veil from the website. There were no measurements on the site and I now know how important it is to have measurements before ordering. When the veil did come the veil was very very long. I had envisioned wearing it tilted to the side and it grazing just below my right eye. Well it was so long it went all the way down to my collarbone. I freaked out. Thankfully Lindsay of LindsayLovesJustin (a 2012 bride) was kind enough to come to my rescue and fix the veil. Lindsay is a sweetheart and she has her own business making these kind of veils as well as stationary for weddings and parties. She is so talented and friendly, of any future brides need stationary or a birdcage or anything else im sure she can make it, check out her facebook page for her company Rae of Art Designs Rae Of Art Designs
Lindsay turned my veil into 2 pieces, a bandaeu style birdcage and the fascinator. I went back and forth about whether or not to wear both the veil and fascinator for the reception right up until the day of the rehearsal. I ultimately decided to forgo to the veil and just wear the fascinator. It looked fanatastic and I got compliments all night on my headpiece.

Wedding Shoes: They were from Nine West and I found them at a TJ Maxx for around $40 which was a great steal considering they look so similar to the Jimmy Choos I wanted but could never justify spending that kind of money on.

Wedding Jewelry:
Necklace: was a gift from my hubby. It was a diamond flower pendant from Zales and matched my gown perfectly.

Something Blue was my grandmothers ring that she gave to my mother years ago, who gave it to me on my wedding day. Its a gorgesous ring that i've admired my whole life it was a wonderfully emotional surprise when my mother gave it to me

Earrings: These were a christmas gift from my parents. They were from Macys. They were CZ and pearl drops and they were lovely.

You can really see the earrings and necklace in this shot

Bracelet: a wedding gift from the hubs. Its a gorgesous diamond bangle.

Wedding Bands: We purchased our bands from Turkan in Tri-County in Levittown. My family as been using Turkan Jewelers for years, no complaints here. I love my band.

Flowers: By far the best vendor I worked with was Flowers By Brian. The pictures really speak for themselves. The bouquets were so full and bright and lush. The centerpieces were amazing!! Beyond what I had envisioned and even better than the samples. In my personal opinion my bouquet was the prettiest bouquet I've ever seen. Loved loved loved the feathers and adored that they added a feather to my hubbys boutinerre. Got rave reviews of the flowers all night. I did different color rose bouquets for my girls with matching rose boutinerres for their groomsmen. For centerpieces I did a mix of high and low. The high were a birch tree base with a round centerpiece of purple, organge, yellow, red and other fall color flowers with apples peeking out from the flowers. My original idea and sample did not have the branches coming out the top. I was surprised when I walked into the room and saw the branches, this was a touch that FFB decided to add and I was pleasantly surprised. The branches really looked great. My low centerpieces were the same flowers as the high without the apples and they were inside big carved pumpkins. There was not a centerpiece left at the end of the night, people all wanted to take one home. I dont have a great pic of the pumpkin of the low one yet. Hopefully I will have better pictures when I get my pro proofs.

In my bouquet I included a brooch. The brooch is a citrine bumble bee. I ordered from Victorian Trading. I ordered 2 and gave one to my mother. It has sentimental value to us and she wore her bee on her shoulder that day and I had mine in my bouquet. No complaints with Victorian Trading they have great stuff.

Garter: Ordered from Sew Unique Garters it was a great experiece. I ordered a Mets garter.

Bridemaid Dresses: We used Davids Bridal and had no issues whatsoever. Davids has 3 dresses in a collection that are all very similar but still different. The dresses are jersey with touches of charmuese. I had my bridesmaids wear the strapless version, my maid of honor wear the v-neck version and my matron of honor wear the one shoulder. They were all in lapis and looked great.

I gave my 2 sisters (my maid of honor & matron of honor) these gorgesous sparkly gray orchid brooches to add to the back of their gowns. I used etsy vendor Mykonos and she was great.

Bridal Party Gifts:
Bridesmaids: I gave the bridesmaids amyethest and diamond earring and necklace sets I got a great deal on from Macys. As well small video cameras. We originally wanted to give flip cameras but flip went out of business so we bought the Kodak version from amazon.com. We got a great deal on them. Spent about $120 per girl on everything.

Groomsmen: My hubby also gave the video cameras to the boys as well as custom cuff links. He got cufflinks that represented each guys profession.

Groom's Parents Gifts: My hubby also gave his dad a set of the cufflinks. We gave my father in law an engraved pocketwatch and my mother in law an engraved jewelry box. We used exclusivelyweddings.com, we had no issues. My hubby also gave his mother a brooch to wear that day that she loved.

Bride's Parents Gifts: We gave my father a gift cerftificate to Prime Steakhouse and my mother we gave her an engraved digital frame from Things Remembered. I also gave my mother the bumble bee brooch I mentioned above.

**We had two extra video cameras that were meant for 2 groomsmen that had to unfortuneatley drop out, we gave a camera to each set of parents**

Grooms Gift: I gave my groom a book of boudoir pictures I took with Ceci B. Ceci is great and made me feel like a goddess that day and in my pictures. Truly beautiful photos. I used mixbook.com to make the book it came out fantastic. He flipped in a very good way. I had also given him for his birthday (just over a month before the wedding) cufflinks made out of the old seats from Shea Stadium. I had gotten a groupon for these and he loved them!! He wore them at the wedding, they were a huge hit.

Bride's Gifts: As mentioned above my darling hubby gave me a gorgesous diamond bangle that I wore on the wedding day.

Mother of the Bride Dress: My mother ordered from Runway Couture in Merrick. They were great to work with and she looked amazing. This is the best shot I have right now of the gown. The bottom had a great 1920's flapper feel and a slight train. My mother looked like a movie star that day.

Tuxes: We used Men's Warehouse they were great. My hubby looked amazing as did all the men at the wedding. My hubby wore an ivory vest and bowtie, while the groomsmen wore black ties and vests.

Favors: We ordered delicious maple syrup from Carmen Brook Maple Farm in Vermont. They etched our names and wedding date into the maple leaf shaped bottles. We bagged them with bags we bought from wrap with us. This was a fairly easy process. The biggest concern we had was when to order to get the syrup in time so it was at its freshest and worrying that UPS would break a bottles during shipment. Luckily no bottles broke.

Little Extras I added to the reception:

'I Promise' Signs: I ordered these from Etsy vendor BeneathTheOak. I had them hanging off the sweetheart table. Just wished the chalk didnt smear but it wasnt a big deal, they still looked great.

My sign to Brian:

His sign to me:

Tree Slice Cake Stand: Ordered from Etsy vendor Postscripts. Fairly easy process, it arrived just a few weeks before the wedding. And she carved our initials in a heart into the wood.

Placecards: I orderd these from an Etsy vendor as well. The vendor was 0namesleft. These were very delayed and made it to me just days before the wedding. I probably wouldnt order from this vendor again. The names were printed on with a vintage typewriter they did look great.

Out of Town Hotel Bags: I made bags for out of towners that included 2 bottles of water, a few fun size candy bars, 2 small bags of chips, a note about the shuttle pick-ups and drop-offs and a customized door hanger

Customized Door Hanger: I used 123print. Caught a fantastic deal. I bought enough to throw one in each out of town gift bag and one for each member of the bridal party.

Shuttle Bus: I used Oyster Rides. They took my guests from the hotel to the church, from the church to the hall and then from the hall back to the hotel. No complaints from any guests and the price was fairly competitive. I would use them again.

Hotel for OOT Guests: We had a fair amount of out of towners at the wedding. We used the Fairfield Inn in Syosset. No complaints they were very accomodating, had a great price and my guests got free breakfast in the morning, they were happy.

Limos: We used RJ's in Wantagh. They are great!!! Seriously the easiest vendor I dealt with. We had two 14 passenger lincoln limos for the day. On our day the boys limo was stuck in traffic so RJ's sent an upgraded SUV limo for the guys free of charge. We had one limo pick up me, my girls and my parents at my house and take us to our pre-ceremony photo shoot at the Nassau County Museum of Art, while a second limo picked up my groom, his boys and his parents at their home and took them to the museum. The drivers of both limos were the sweetest, nicest guys ever. They kept the champagne flowing in both limos and we're beyond accomodating. I would use them again in a heartbeat. In fact my wedding was the 3rd time I've used RJ's and never had an issue once.

Pre-Ceremony Photo Shoot: We took photos at the Nassau County Museum of Art in Rosyln. It has some of the most beautiful grounds on long island. And they we're a great price. No complaints whatsoever. They were wonderful. I hope once I have my proofs I can add in some pics from the shoot. These photos really show off the beauty of the gardens as well as the quality of the my photographer.

Photographer/Videographer: We used Lawrence Photography for both photos and video. I haven't seen my proofs yet but my sister used Lawrence in 2010 for her wedding and they were fabulous. Her pictures and video are gorgesous so I have complete faith that mine will be too. Larry (the main photographer) stayed with us all day and surprised me by bringing the videographer to the museum to get the reveal on film. That was a complete surprise. I was expecting the videographer to only be at the church and the reception so I was shocked in a good way to see him at the museum for our reveal. I cant wait to see the finished products. Here are some of my favorite shots:

Ceremony: We got married at Christ Church of Oyster Bay. It is my husband's family church and its beautiful. It is an historical church it was Teddy Roosevelts church. They were very accomodating and since it is a very small congregation they were cool with letting us have a nighttime ceremony (6pm start). Our priest made our ceremony very family orientated with our bridal party and our parents doing several readings and blessings. It was very different but really special. My guests got a kick out of all the historical mentions of the Roosevelt family.

DIY Church Programs: such a labor of love!! I wish I had atleast one photo!! Hopefully in my pro pics they'll be a few. Below is a picture of my inspiration which included a pocketfold with a vintage hankie and the pocketfold said 'For Happy Tears'. I made my programs to look very similar and below is a picture of the hankies I used.

A picture of my cousin handing them out

Reception: Our reception was at The Fox Hollow. Before the wedding I would rate them with a F. They were truly awful to work with. Between not honoring certain aspects of our contract, not returning calls and emails and a general rude demeanor they were many moments my husband and I contemplated getting a refund and going elsewhere. My biggest issue with them is their lack of customer service. They push you to different people at every apppointment, so you never end up with one particular banquet manager, or consultant that understands your specific needs. There is no one that can answer your questions, or make you feel at ease. My mother has planned several events on long island including another wedding (my sister's) and we know that this treatment of clients is not the norm at most halls. At most halls the clients, especially the brides and grooms are welcomed and treated with respect, this is far from the way fox hollow treated us. Like I said they passed us off a lot, every time I would make an appointment for a payment or to go over menu options I would arrive on time and be told they couldnt find my appointment in the books. The receptionist has a vile attitude and is a nightmare to deal with. In their defense because of all the issues we had specifically with the contract in the beginning, Fox Hollow was willing to throw in extras to keep us. This was nice, but they wouldnt have to throw in extras at their own cost if their employees simply did their jobs corectly in the first place. As of the wednesday before the wedding when I came in to drop off my favors, champagne flutes etc. I was still being passed off to different people. At this point I had explained how I wanted things to look to 6 different people. And ofcourse none of those people were anywhere to be found on the wedding day and they were issues with my instructions not being followed, most likely because I didnt have one particular BM and they were just way too many cooks in the kitchen. On the day of the wedding they were supposed to have a low centerpiece (i had paid my florist for an extra one) at our outdoor cocktail hour on the placecard table. The centerpiece wasnt there when guests arrived, my mother had to remind the maitre de to put it out. When me and my groom walked into the Winter Garden Pavillion room to take photos just a few minutes before my guests came in we noticed the favors weren't on the tables, my 'I Promise' signs weren't hanging off our sweetheart table like I requested, our engagement photo wasnt on the mantle, and the maitre de was arguing with me that I never brought them a custom cake stand which I had just 3 days earlier. (not sure how they could have misplaced it, it is a slice of tree and about 25lbs) The team had to struggle to get it all right before the guests came in and it was very nerve racking to watch this happening as we were taking photos, and in defense of the Fox Hollow they did somehow pull it all together in time. Another issue I had was that at cocktail hour they put my signature drink sign laying flat on top of a bucket of used dirty glasses behind the bar instead of out front so guests could see it. As soon as I saw this I spoke with the bartender and had it rectified, but it was still irritating considering I took the time to make the drink sign. The drink sign was on full display on the bar during the reception so that was good. Almost all of my issues with the Fox Hollow took place before the wedding, on the actual day there were several hiccups but in defense of the Fox Hollow they were very nice to us that day and did everything they could to rectify their mistakes in a timely manner which I appreciated. The food was amazing and the waiters were great with delivering drinks to the tables so people didnt have the wait at the bar. Our bridal attendant was above and beyond amazing, her name was Angie and she was by far the best part of Fox Hollow. On a positive note the food was fantastic from cocktail hour through the vienesse and exit table. My guests were stuffed with amazing food and drink so that made me very happy. And the fox hollow let us put out to-go bags on the vienesse tables which people really loved. So like I said before the wedding I would rate them with a F, after the wedding and after a few weeks to gain some prespecitive on all the little messups I would give the Fox Hollow a B-. Because of all my issues leading up to the wedding, I still wouldnt recommend them to anyone and would never patronize a Scotto Brothers establishment again.

DIY Menus: I printed these myself at Staples. No issues they came out great.

DIY Table Numbers: I made our table numbers from our engagement photos. I used picnik.com to turn them black and white and add the number, printed at walgreens and used frames I bought from the dollar tree. The frames were originally wood frames painted navy blue. I used sandpaper to scrap off most of the paint from each frame and distressed them myself using a sewing need and more sandpaper. This was a fairly easy DIY project that came out great.

DJ/Lighting: We used Variety Music for both the DJ/MC and the uplighting in the room. The lighting was great we used amber uplights all around the room and it really gave a soft glow to the Winter Garden room. It is my personal opinion that this particular room at night really needs the uplighting especially because of the glass ceilings at night can make the room appear dark. I was very glad I decided to have the uplights.

The music: I was very pleased with the music. My only issues were that they forgot to do the anniversary dance, and randomly during dinner the MC started to play this stupid 'pass a dollar around the table' game. I had put on my DO NOT list, 'no group dances, chicken dance, macarena etc' I thought that that note covered stupid table games as well but I guess not. I went right up to the DJ and told him that the MC can finish this little game but not to do anymore. I really didnt want that kind of wedding and we had no ridiculous giveaways or props either. It was just a tiny hiccup and partly my fault for not explaining that I didnt want that to the company prior to the wedding. I would still recommend Variety because other than that they were great. Especially because they were able to come through on even some unusual song requests, like 'I'm On A Boat' which was a huge hit with my merchant marine hubby and his boat buddies.

Wedding Cake: Our cake was from Francesco's Bakery in Hicksville. It was a carrot cake with buttercream frosting and it was heaven on a fork. People were raving about the cake. I had a very particular vision for the cake, I wanted it to go with my theme of woodsy enchanted forest and I had them make the cake to look like it was a birch tree. I think the bakery did a great job on the decor of the cake and I love that they made it look like our initials were carved in a heart on the 'tree trunk'. The butterflies on the cake were actually the very first purchase i made for the wedding. I bought them from etsy vendor ButterflyBazzar. I think they looked great, worked well with the theme and were a welcome change from the standard flowers on a cake look.

Grooms Cake: Oh my god the grooms cake!! It was one of the biggest hits at the wedding. I surprised my hubby with a Mr Met cake from the Cake Gallery in Bellmore. The cake was Mr Met sitting on top of the field and had edible baseball cards made out of chocolate of his fav past and current players. My husband got such a huge kick out of the cake he was thrilled. It was delicious too. The bakery did the field in canoli cake and Mr. Met in chocolate mousse.

The Fox Hollow Inn: The Fox Hollow comped us a suite at the Inn for our wedding night which was great. And because of all the issues early on with the Fox Hollow one of the extras they threw in was an additional suite that my parents used on the wedding night. The hotel is beautiful. We just didnt use it for our room block becuase it is very expensive.

Honeymoon: We spent 12 nights at the Divi Village Golf and Beach Resort in Aruba. It was a fabulous honeymoon. We had a fantastic time, so relaxing!!

I'll finish off my very long review wishing all future brides, newlyweds and old married couples a lifetime of happiness. I'll leave you all with my favorite picture and memorie from the wedding.

Re: Our Amazing October 8th 2011 Wedding

wow your wedding was beautiful :) Your cake is gorgeous, I have never seen such a pretty one before.

As for the Fox Hollow that is awful. But I agree from the one appointment I had there that they are nothing but RUDE RUDE RUDE. And that first impression was enough to turn me off.
