My 1/15/06 Review-Fox Hollow, Bill Minnick, High Voltage, Signature Florist, Royalty, Oksana, April-Creative Hair, La Rosa Cigars, Gownfind, Aruba & more! FULL Aruba review on pg 5 (added 4/28/06)!!!
I am sorry it’s taken so long for me to write my review. I had to clear some issues up before I could write an honest and thoughtful review. This website has helped me so much with my planning (especially the reviews) so I hope that others find my review helpful.My wedding day was truly the most incredible day of my life. As with any wedding, there were a few family issues. However I never let this upset me or lose sight of the fact that I was marrying the love of my life. I realized that day that every stressful moment DH and I had been through was worth it in the end. I do want to give a few words of advice though. Always keep in mind why you are having the wedding. There were definitely times when I found myself getting wrapped up in the little things (like do I get personalized napkins? Which pair of underwear do I get? etc) and I would take a step back and focus on the fact that I was marrying my soul mate. In the end, some of the little things really don’t matter. I realized that the things I was stressing about were inconsequential to my wedding. The only thing that really matters is the love between you and your DH/FH. I was so happy on my wedding day that nothing else mattered but getting married (despite having inevitable drama the morning of my wedding!). If you have any questions, please feel free to FM me.
Ok, on to my review! Please feel free to look at my community album for more pictures.
LIW A+++++++
I don’t even know where to start. I can’t thank Ron and Liz enough for creating this site. Because of LIW I was able to get a number of my vendors. I was confident in every vendor because of the honesty of the women on this site. I also made some really incredible friends (you know who you are!
) and I am so grateful all of your love and support. All of the women on here are incredible and I thank you for taking time to answer my posts and provide me with support.Family Restaurant A+
We had our rehearsal dinner at Family Restaurant in Forest Hills. DH and I have eaten here numerous times. We were given the back room, which was large enough to seat around 45 people. The food was delicious and the service was wonderful. We had no problems with them whatsoever. The party packages they offer are really reasonable. Family Restaurant also has valet parking, which our guests loved.
Mother Nature A
I put in a request for light snow about a year ago. She definitely heard that request!
However, a week before the wedding I changed my request to the warm weather that we were experiencing. She apparently didn’t hear this, because I had light snow and A LOT of ice. In all seriousness, DH and I knew that getting married in January was a gamble because of the weather. Even though it was really cold and windy, we still had a fantastic wedding.APPAREL
Princess Bride Tiaras A+
I bought my headpiece from Princess Bride Tiaras. My headpiece came really quickly and it was packaged well. I also got it on sale at 50% off! If you are still looking, definitely check them out.
Gownfind A
www.gownfind.com
I purchased my Jasmine gown from Phyllis. She was able to save me about $300 on the dress. She also did all of the alterations on my dress. Phyllis did a fantastic job. She ended up having to take the gown in a size and a half and it looked incredible. I had nothing but positive experiences with her when it came to my dress. She always took care of me, even when I got stuck in traffic (which happened often since I was coming from Queens). I also bought my bra and veil from her. I would definitely recommend her again to everyone. One word of advice, though. Make sure you try everything on, especially after alterations. My younger sister and I were in a rush to leave. Phyllis also altered my sister’s BM dress and when we picked it up, it had to be let out a little. After the alteration, my sister didn’t try it on and we just left. The dress didn’t fit her right on the wedding day and ended up ripping. I don’t really blame Phyllis, since my sister should have tried on the dress. Overall, it was a positive experience.
The Tuxedo Shop by Flowerama A-
http://www.tuxshopny.com
DH and I had really good experiences with them and would definitely recommend them. They have 3 locations in Queens and at least one of the locations is open on a Sunday. We went in and were able to find a really nice Ralph Lauren tux for DH. He was able to get it free because of the number of men renting tuxes. We also had a 50% discount that we split between the fathers. The reason why they get an A- is because many of the guys (including DH) had some errors in the measurements. However, Flowerama was quick to rectify the problem and everyone looked fantastic the day of the wedding.
Notice in this one DH has a 6 pack... of Corona!
MJM Shoes A
http://www.mjmdesignershoes.com
I bought my shoes from MJM. I wanted silver shoes, since I would be able to wear them again. I found my shoes one day on a whim and decided to purchase them a week later. I loved them! They were an incredible price and looked beautiful with my dress.
Elsa Jewelry A+
http://www.elsarings.com
I was the grand prize winner of LIW/Elsa Jewelry contest. I won a white gold wedding band with diamonds. I was shocked and thrilled that I won! Unfortunately, the day before DH and I had already purchased our wedding rings. Stephan and Elsa were really great. They allowed me to put the money towards another piece of jewelry. When I went in there to meet with Stephan, I fell in love with a pair of earrings. I was able to use the credit from the ring I won and put it towards the earrings. DH then paid for the rest, which was my wedding present. I would definitely use Elsa again.
Pico Jewelry A+
http://www.picojewelry.com
DH bought my engagement ring from Pico (in the diamond district). When it came time to purchase our wedding rings, we decided to go back there. We worked with Joe and had nothing put positive experiences. They were always polite and courteous to us. Joe helped us design DH’s wedding band and it came out beautiful. They even held the rings and didn’t require payment until we picked them up. I would highly recommend anyone looking for rings to visit them or check out their website. I will definitely purchase from them again.
Here's a close up of both rings taken at Pico
FAVORS/ACCESSORIES
Wrap With Us A+
www.wrapwithus.com
I bought my iron on bride letters, garter, flower girl basket and ring pillow from them. I went directly to their warehouse and had nothing but positive experiences. Their prices are incredible and the service was good. I know many of you have seen my pics, so I will try to post some new ones and not bore you all!

Favors For You- Ebay store A+
http://stores.ebay.com/Favors-for-You
I bought my favor tags and cry packs from Angie of Favors for You. She has a store on Ebay. She did a fabulous job with both items I purchased from her. Some of the cry packs got stuck together and ripped a little. She replaced all of them quickly and without any problems. Definitely check her out! I don't have any pics of the finished cry packs... I'll have to take one!
Here's the proof for my cry pack
Efavormart- Ebay store A+
http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZefavormartQQhtZ-1
I bought my votive holders for my place cards from Efavormart. I won an auction for 144 candles for $35. They shipped really fast and every one of them was in perfect condition.
Lance Armstrong Foundation A++
http://www.laf.org
I can’t really rate them, since they are such an incredible organization. Our main favor was the LiveStrong bracelets. DH and I wanted to give money to charity but also have our guests get something tangible. We immediately thought of the Lance Armstrong Foundation, since DH himself is a cancer survivor. The bracelets shipped fast with no problems. It was incredible to see so many of our guests wearing the bracelets during the night. It proved that our favor was meaningful and not just something that will be thrown away.
DH dancing with his mother-she's wearing hers!
My sister (and MOH) wearing hers
Our friend Mike, who hasn't taken his bracelet off since DH was diagnosed with cancer
Lindt Chocolates A
I decided a month and a half before the wedding that I wanted to give out chocolate in addition to the bracelets. I was in Riverhead at Tanger and decided to check out the Lindt store there. The person helping me was really good. He advised me to purchase bags of chocolate truffles rather than buy them individually. He also reminded me at checkout to use my coupon that was included in the Tanger book. Everyone loved the chocolate truffles and commented how they matched my color scheme.
Papermart A+
http://www.papermart.com
I purchased the favor boxes (3x3) and ribbon (single sided red satin) from Papermart. Shipping was quick and they had the best prices for both items. I would purchase from them again in a second! See above pic for products!
Michael’s/AC Moore A
I bought so many things at Michaels & AC Moore. I bought my sign in frame, acid free pens, picture frames for the card box, tulle for the chocolates, tea lights for the votive holders, lazy susan, baskets and ribbon (when I ran out of the ribbon from Papermart). Both stores accept competitor’s coupons and I was able to save a lot of money this way. Although I am scared of arts and crafts, I love these stores!
PAPER PRODUCTS
Scarlet Peterson Designs A+
I used Maryellen from Scarlet Peterson Designs for my invitations. I fell in love with Jean M. invites but realized that it would have been way too much money for us. One of the fabulous 05 brides, Ladybug63, recommended her. Maryellen is amazing. She is really professional and great to work with. In addition to creating my invitations, she also addressed them for me with computer calligraphy. It looked beautiful and I was so happy that I didn’t have to do it myself! It may take Maryellen some time to get back to you, but it’s worth it. I received so many compliments on my invitations and I couldn’t have been happier with them.
My best friend A++
My best friend made my programs and accommodation cards for me. She went above and beyond the call of duty calming me down when I thought they wouldn’t get done. I had my monogram on the front of the program and it took forever to get it right.. I love her and all the work she put into it.
Wedding Day Vendors
Creative Hair Designs- April A++
http://www.liweddings.com/vendors/hair/creativehairdesigns/
I don’t even know where to start… The morning of my wedding there was snow and ice on the ground. April was scheduled to come at 8 AM and start working on the ladies. She showed up at 7:30 AM because she didn’t want to be late. April was INCREDIBLE! I knew from the time I had my trial that she was extremely talented and a wonderful woman. April got right to work and brought clips/pins etc for my girls to choose from. She did everyone’s hair and my girls looked beautiful! When it came time for her to do my hair, I was somewhat frazzled by the events of the morning. She really helped me put everything into perspective and kept me calm. The end result was STUNNING! My hair looked even better than I could have imagined. My hair not only looked beautiful then, it looked beautiful all night and the next day!! I would use April again in a heartbeat. She is so talented and a great person. Her prices were more than reasonable and it really paid to have someone come to my house that morning.
It's my wedding day- I'm getting my hair done & I'm on the phone!
My son, Mac, is so happy for his mommy & daddy!
Make Up by Oksana A++
http://www.makeupbyoksana.com
Again, I don’t know how I can say differently what has already been said. Oksana is a genius when it comes to make up. I had my trial in June and booked her immediately. I knew she would make me look beautiful on my wedding day. One of the things that I loved was that she posted her rates on her webpage. Because of her winter special, I was able to get my make up for free! A few days before the wedding she called me and made me laugh when I thought I was going to pull my hair out of my head (my car had died and I waited 4 hours for a tow!). The morning of the wedding, Oksana kept everyone laughing. I must say that she and April work so well together! When I had some drama that morning, Oksana was very protective of me and really took charge. She even did my dishes at one point! Oksana was funny, witty and incredible to have around on my wedding day. I would use her again without a doubt!

Royalty Limos A+
http://www.royaltylimo.com
Royalty was nothing but great to deal with. I had no problems whatsoever. We booked with them at a Fox Hollow showcase. After talking to other limo companies, they gave us the best deal for an Escalade. I went in the week before my wedding and met with Manny. He took down all of the info and I was able to get a look at the Escalade, which we used for the entire bp. DH and I decided that we wanted one big limo and wanted to spend time with the bp after the ceremony. The Escalade is great because it can hold a lot of people. There’s also a bench that is somewhat removed from the rest of the group. We had the best of both worlds- privacy when we wanted it and being with our entire bp.
The Friday before my wedding, Royalty again called to confirm pick up time for the wedding and the HM. The night before the wedding, they called again. I loved that they continued to make sure that nothing had changed. John, our driver, was 15 minutes early to DH’s parents’ house. He got them to the church quickly and then came back for us. He waited patiently while the rest of the bp got ready. He didn’t panic when there were 2 cars stuck on ice ahead of us, which forced us to go out of our way to get to the church. Once outside, he really helped out and helped the DOC direct everyone. John even went so far as to remind DH that we had to be at Fox Hollow by 5:15 and was trying to think of ways for us not to have to pay extra money. Royalty treated me like I was Royalty. I loved Royalty so much that I recommended my sister use them for her July wedding and she booked them!
Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Ridgewood, NY A++
I always knew that when it came time to get married, I would get married here. OLMM has been my church since I was 2 months old. It is an old, large church that is beautiful. Msgr. Danna was our officiant. He was really great to meet with. We met with him a few times before the wedding and each time we left, we liked him more and more. He’s pretty liberal compared to other priests. He had no problem allowing us to read our own vows and doing the hand ceremony. We were allowed to have an aisle runner, flash photography and throw rose petals. He even encouraged us not to buy flowers for the church as there would still be Christmas flowers. He did a wonderful job with the ceremony and used a lot of humor throughout. Many of our family members loved this and they continue to comment on how enjoyable the ceremony was. We used the church organist for the ceremony music and he was great. If you’re looking for an old, big church, definitely consider OLMM.

Bill Minnick A++
http://www.minnickphotography.com
I originally found Bill on the budget vendors webpage. After emailing him and looking at his website, we decided to make an appointment. He was the 1st photographer we met with and we found ourselves comparing others to him. He offers so many packages at many different price ranges. We were able to book 2 photographers, a coffee table (magazine style) album, thank yous, enlargements, parent albums, all negatives, all pictures on a cd, min. of 1,000 proofs, albums for the proofs, and full day coverage for less than many of the other studios (and got more in our package). We met with him in October for our engagement shoot. We were thrilled with the final product. The day of the wedding he came to the house and just started shooting pictures. I didn’t even realize he was there most of the time! He also was really helpful during the time of drama. While Bill was at my house, the 2nd photographer, Andrew, was at DH’s parents’ house. I never even noticed either of them the whole night. They both managed to capture our day from start to finish without being intrusive or noticeable. Both DH and I really love our proofs and couldn’t be happier. All of the pictures in my review are taken by Bill and Andrew.
This is one of my all time favorites!
I have no clue what I'm laughing at here!
Signature Florist A+
http://www.signatureflowers.com/AboutUs.asp
I stumbled across Signature at a bridal expo at the Marriot in Uniondale. I really liked them and decided that I was going to contact them when I was ready for flowers. Around the time I was doing my search, I received a post card stating good for a free bm bouquet. DH and I went to meet with them and George agreed to make a sample for us free of charge without the pressure of booking. When we saw our sample (and a sample of the bm bouquet) we were blown away. The price was incredible and he was so honest and easy to deal with. He didn’t try to pressure me into a huge bouquet as other florists had done. He really listened to what we wanted. We ended up getting our pew bows from Signature, since I never got around to making the ones I wanted. George barely charged us for them. The morning of the wedding, the flowers came right on time and looked incredible! There’s a picture of me almost in tears because DH’s bout was stunning. I had a bouquet of black magic roses which was exactly how I envisioned it would be. My MOH bouquet was beautiful- forever young and vendela roses. The bms had vendela roses which looked incredible against the red. Our cps were amazing and looked even better than they did when the sample was made. We wanted something simple but elegant, and that is exactly what we got. There was one small glitch the day of, which was rectified immediately. It seems that the driver forgot to unload one cp. My DOC called them and within 10 minutes the cp was there. I loved Signature and am glad that I have been able to refer so many brides there. You won’t be sorry if you book them!
Doug Russo A
Doug is our friend who is also a film maker. He agreed to video tape our wedding. DH and I didn’t want an extravagant video- just the basics and a little more. While I haven’t seen the finished product, Doug has been enthusiastic and is taking his time to make a great video.
High Voltage Sounds A+
http://www.highvoltagesounds.com
We booked Vinny pretty much on the spot. This isn’t an easy thing for me to do, as I am the type of person that has to explore all my options before I book something. DH loved him from the minute we met him. He was really knowledgeable about music and didn’t try to sell us on anything we didn’t want or need. He was always really good at getting back to me whenever I had a question. DH and I walked into “Another One Bites the Dust” by Queen and he was able to set it up perfectly! At the reception, he came into the bridal suite to make sure nothing had changed. It was great to see him, as he made me really excited to be introduced. During our introduction, everyone was laughing and really got a kick out of our song. Vinny didn’t talk unnecessarily and did a great job of playing good songs. Everyone was up and dancing most of the night (except when dessert was served). We’re received so many compliments on choosing him and everyone had a great time. Vinny is proof that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get amazing quality. Also see above pictures to see my guests in action!

La Rosa Cigars A
http://www.larosacubanacigars.com
I decided with less than a week before the wedding to surprise DH with a cigar roller. Christine (chrissynricky) suggested La Rosa months before my wedding. I checked them out and liked what I saw. When I was sure I wanted cigars, I contacted them. They were so easy to deal with. I called on Monday and had my contract emailed to me on Tuesday. We had 75 cigars (50 pre-rolled and 25 rolled on site) and the cigar roller for an hour. Our roller came to the reception early to set up. Then Vinny made the announcement that I had a surprise for DH. He loved his surprise and so did our guests! I would recommend them to anyone who is interested in cigars.
P OSH Wedding Productions C-
I booked Maxine knowing that she was just starting out as a wedding coordinator. I understood this and decided to take a chance. Leading up to the wedding, I didn’t have much contact with her. I had organized just about everything and really just needed some help the day of. When both my photographer and I couldn’t find our contract, she was able to email me a copy. I was grateful for this. Leading up to the wedding, she was good with emails and agreed to come to the rehearsal dinner. She took notes and I felt confident that she would do a good job. The morning of the wedding, she was helpful. I couldn’t find the acid free pens that I bought and she went and bought some new ones. She had an assistant with her, who was also helpful. Maxine’s husband was good enough to drive from my house in Middle Village to my IL’s house in Whitesone with all of the boutonnieres for the guys and beer for DH. Again, I appreciate this and it really helped. Maxine left my house early to set up the pew bows in church and drop off the unity candle. Everything looked great. She was there to greet me at the front of the church after the fiasco with the ice and before I knew it, I was married! From this point on, it all went downhill. Maxine left while we were taking pictures. She was going to Fox Hollow to check on things. I had rented a shawl and brought my fur muff and garment bag with me so that I could put my dress in it after the wedding. Somehow it came with me to Fox Hollow but I haven’t seen any of these items since. Once at Fox Hollow, Maxine walked up to DH and asked how many cp we were supposed to have. She then informed him that a cp was missing. Then my bridal attendant, Jen, came up to me and stated that my DOC wanted to know what she should do about the missing centerpiece. I had to tell her to tell Maxine to call Signature. This is something that Maxine should have done without asking. I tried to not let it get to me, but I got somewhat upset. 10 minutes later, my bridal attendant informed me that the missing cp was there. Maxine never informed me of this after sending a message through the bridal attendant. During the night, I didn’t see much of Maxine. I thought she was taking care of things. She did tip all of my vendors and was honest when she had to go into my wallet and take out a little more money. I do appreciate this honesty. At the end of the night, she told me that she checked the bridal suite and that everything had been accounted for. DH and I went to the Inn happy. That night, I was looking for my garment bag to put my dress in but couldn’t find it. I know it was in the bridal suite, as DH and I saw the garment bag, shawl, and muff on the table. I just figured it was left behind. I called Maxine twice the next day and asked her to please call me as I realized the other stuff was missing, along with my unity candle, holder, & the glass for my sign in board. I specifically stated that I need to hear back from her and that I would be up late since we were leaving for our HM the next day. When we got back from Aruba 10 days later, still no call from her. I emailed her and left messages but nothing. At the end of January I finally heard from her. She did have my unity candle and holder. She informed me that the glass to my sign in board was broken since she put it on the floor and someone stepped on it and offered to pay to replace the glass. It turns out she didn’t have my other stuff and didn’t know where it was. She stated that she told my bms that it was on the back pew and that she didn’t want to take it because it was cold out. Again, she should have checked with me first. She even suggested that maybe one of my bms left it in the limo. I called Fox Hollow and they stated that she took everything at the end of the night. I called her and told her this and it took a long time for her to get back to me. I left numerous messages and emails to no avail. I finally hear back from her sometime in February. At this point, I am not a happy camper. I considered myself a relatively relaxed bride and all that know me would say the same. After developing my table cameras, there were pictures of Maxine and her assistant eating dinner with my guests!!! This is not acceptable to me. I confronted her on this and she stated that Fox Hollow wouldn’t set up a table for her and that they pointed out the only 2 empty seats in the room. Well, they happened to be at the LIW table! Regardless, she should have addressed this with me first. To make a long story short, my garment bag, shawl and muff have never been recovered. I am responsible to pay for the lost shawl and am missing things that I purchased to have after the wedding. I honestly do hope that with experience she is able to help other brides, as she did help me somewhat that day.
Fox Hollow A++
Fox Hollow was incredible! They went above and beyond our expectations. When DH and I first got engaged, we wanted to get married in Vermont. However, this was not possible. When we walked into Fox Hollow, we knew this was the place for us. It is so charming and has a quaint, country feel. We met with Frank Marino, who was amazing. We really wanted Christmas decorations for our pictures and Frank put it in our contract and made sure they were all up. During the whole wedding process, Fox Hollow was always quick to get back to us and able to help us whenever we needed help. Before the wedding, we met with Jennifer Nazarian, who made sure we had everything exactly as we wanted it. She really took care of things and put up with my numerous emails. The day of the wedding, from the minute we stepped foot out of the limo, we were treated like royalty. Sam, our banquet manager, was there to greet us. He was incredible the whole night, making sure things ran smoothly and that we had what we needed. The photo studio was set up with food and drinks. He really did an incredible job. Then I met Jen, my bridal attendant. She was AMAZING! DH asked for a Grey Goose and soda once and the whole night she made sure he had a full drink. I ordered Malibu & pineapple and she did the same for me. Jen was always right behind me making sure I was ok. After DH and I went outside to take pics in the snow, my feet were wet. Jen dried them and put a new pair of socks on my feet… I was so surprised at how attentive and accommodating she was. My father, who is picky and will find anything to complain about, even commented on how attentive the staff was.
Dinner was delicious! The filet mignon was so tender. The chicken was moist and flavorful. We received so many compliments from our guests about the food- most were shocked that they could pick from seven choices. I had not a care in the world the whole night because of Fox Hollow. They really did give DH and me our dream wedding.
I am such a pig- I managed to get chocolate on my face and DH finds this funny?
Honeymoon
Wyndham Aruba A
We LOVED Aruba! It was the perfect location for our honeymoon. DH did not think that he would enjoy a beach vacation where there is not much to do. After 2 days, he realized that he was wrong and commented how much he loved Aruba and the fact that we don’t have to do or see anything! DH and I booked the Wyndham after searching through countless reviews on trip advisor. The Wyndham is a huge hotel with a clock on the top of the building. We stayed in a Deluxe room, which was huge and had an ocean view. DH and I loved the Wyndham and would stay there again. The staff was attentive and friendly. On our first night, we met a bar tender who informed us that every night from 5-7 it was free wine. Even after 7 he gave us free wine! The beach can get crowded and the palapas get booked quickly. Since this was our HM, DH and I didn’t want to wake up early to reserve a palapa. We really didn’t care if we sat under one. Instead we would sit by the pool and walk a few feet to the beach when we wanted to go in the ocean. The Wyndam has really good restaurants. We ate at Pago Pago our first night there. Dinner was delicious! The staff found out we were on our HM and they brought us free champagne. Blossoms was also really good and we got a free desert for being on our HM. Baci was ok… DH and I felt that the food could have been better. We also ate at El Goucho and loved the food. Our favorite restaurants by far are Papiamento and Gasparito- both serve Aruban food that is to die for. While in Aruba, DH and I booked a trip to DePalm Island- this is a MUST!!! We booked the Sea Trek, where you walk on the bottom of the ocean on a walkway. This was INCREDIBLE and I highly recommend this. DH can’t swim, so he was able to enjoy the water this way. We also went snorkeling on DePalm Island, which was incredible. The water is so clear and you see so many fish. Kukoo Kunuku is another must do- this bus tour was so much fun! Initially, DH did not want to do this. Halfway through the tour, he commented how he was glad I made him do it! We also booked an all day Jeep tour through ABC tours. We found that this tour hit more sites than any of the other tours. It’s also significantly cheaper (price includes lunch). If you pick up a guide book in your hotel lobby (I believe it’s Aruba Nights) there should be a coupon in it for ABC tours. We loved the Jeep tour and the fact that we were able to see the whole island. Unfortunately, I can’t post pics at this time, but I will post them ASAP and include a more thorough review.
Here are some pics from the Wyndham. We stayed in a deluxe oceanview room.
