Re: Jewish Brides
sounds great to me!i have a ton of questions as i am a recent convert. i have not been to many jewish weddings and although i studied alot during my years towards conversion, i still have questions.
1. do you need to cover your shoulders or if the veil is long enough does that count? i had a conservative conversion and i am having a conservative rabbi officiate.
2. who signs the ketubah? i was told it had to be someone who was jewish and not a relative but also leads a very jewish life (i.e. keeping kosher etc).
3. does my father have to wear a kipah (sorry for the spelling if wrong)? we are not getting married at a temple?
i have a few more but let's just get started with this!

Re: Jewish Brides
My place has an outside gazebo that they are telling me will 'count' as a chuppah - is this true?

Re: Jewish Brides
Groovy, my mother, father, and grandmother are all insisting that I must wear something over my shoulders for the ceremony, even though I intend to have a veil that would feasibly cover my shoulders. They are also insisting that I must wear a blusher. I am having my ceremony at the reception site and will be married most likely by a reform or conservative rabbi. My parents haven't seen the inside of a temple for anything other than a wedding or funeral or other religious ceremony in years. They do not attend services and are not affiliated with a temple. However, they insist that if I am having a religious ceremony (married by a rabbi), then I must follow certain rules. I say, 'whatever,' but am willing to do it to make them happy. As for your father wearing a yarmulke, I don't think it's necessary, but it would be a nice touch if he's not uncomfortable with it. I assume your FH and his father will be wearing one?
BTW, love the idea of having a Jewish bride thread. It seems like there are not a lot of us on the boards and questions seem to get lost amongst the shuffle of threads when we have questions specifically related to Jewish weddings.

Re: Jewish Brides
I like the idea of a Jewish Brides thread. As far as some of the questions posted here, your Rabbi can answer them, since each Rabbi has different preferences and ways of interpreting different traditions and rules.

My dad said he would wear one if it made me happy. He wants to be respectful towards my FH's family-his only concern is that he is bald and doesn't understand how it will stay put!

Re: Jewish Brides
ok i gots more questions-how many of you are having a kosher wedding?
if you are not having a kosher wedding but are having a few glatt kosher meals brought in, what are you doing about plates and utensils? where is it being catered from? are you doing anything special for your cocktail hour for those guests? any help is greatly appreciated!

Re: Jewish Brides
We're not having a kosher wedding, but we're having it kosher-style (no dairy, pork, or shellfish). Our site will provide Glatt kosher meals for those who need them at no extra cost. Unfortunately, they serve them in the aluminum trays that they are packaged in and with plastic utensils. Not so classy, but those who are observant are used to it. The family friends that we are planning on getting kosher meals for said that they would be able to eat any vegetarian or fish entrees as well, so that we wouldn't have to worry about it, but as I said, we get them for the same price as the other dishes, so I will leave it up to the guests whether they want the kosher or another option. As for the cocktail hour, in lieu of some of the pork products and dairy, we are getting an additional fish platter and extras of the other things, so our guests will be able to pick from the items that they know they can have. I think it will be an issue for 2 or 3 people at my wedding, so I'm not too worried about it - they'll find something they can eat without a problem.

Re: Jewish Brides
We ordered our kippot at a place in Florida, because they are being provided by my parents who live down there. But check out these sites for great online deals.http://www.judaicaworldwide.com/judaica.asp?qlevel=1&cat_id=6
http://www.traditionsjewishgifts.com/yarmulkes.html
If these are no good, try to do a search on Google for 'Imprinted kippot' and see what comes up for you. Good luck.

Re: Jewish Brides
Yay, Jewish Brides! Glad to join the chat!Someone asked about the gazebo counting as a Chuppah. I would have to say that it depends on what your Rabbi has to say.
I'm covering my shoulders for the ceremony, as are my BMs.

Re: Jewish Brides
Yeah - I will prob cover shoulders too - esp since the dress I am planning on ordering comes with a shawl. We are meeting with a Cantor this weekend and I am planning on asking him about the gazebo.

Re: Jewish Brides
Hi ladies!I am also a Jewish bride! I am actually wearing a cap sleeved dress for the ceremony, so no need to worry about my shoulders. But, if you are getting married by reform Rabbi I think that having a veil covering your shoulders is acceptable.
