Re: Jewish Brides

Could grandma's hold the bread while uncles said the blessing? What about the blessing for the wine, is each uncle doing one prayer? You could present them with flowers.

Re: Jewish Brides

I agree with them walking down the aisle. FH's grandma will be doing that escorted by his 2 cousins (males).

Re: Jewish Brides

Well, I kind of figured that they would walk down the aisle anyway. FH and I are not very religious, and we don't even have a rabbi yet as neither of us nor our families belongs to a temple. I'd like to do something a little more officially just for them...maybe I will ask them to each do a reading of something, or have them do the blessing over the wine.

Thanks, ladies.

Re: Jewish Brides

think you can engrave your bands, I didn't hear other wise. I am getting band with diamonds, and FI might also, so stones are allowed. And plus, nobody will notice engraving unless you tell them

i thought that you were not allowed to have a band that has precious stones in it?

Re: Jewish Brides

I was under the impression that the only requirement was that the ring be a perfect circle, with no breaks in the metal. Basically, as long as it has no end and no beginning, you should be fine. Always play it safe and check with your rabbi, though. I'm getting married in my grandfather's wedding ring (he asked my grandmother to give it to me before he passed away and she gave it to me just before his funeral), and it has lines etched in it (for lack of a better description). I think as long as the stones are embedded in the ring itself, rather than in a setting with prongs, precious stones are allowed.

Re: Jewish Brides

i looked it up inthe 'jewish book of why' and it stated 'that the ring is supposed to be free of stones so that the ring is of 'determinable value.' the value of a ring with diamonds can not be easily appraised by an inexperieced person. if given a jewelled ring, a naive bride might erroneously think she is receiving something of great value. judiasm protects the bride by suggesting a simple, unadorned band.' i also thought that it was to symbolize unending love and devotion.

i will just ask my rabbi :)

i personally wanted a diamond wedding band, but, if this is the case, now i will have to get a simple one for the ceremony and then put the diamond one on during the yichud.

Re: Jewish Brides

That's exactly what I was going to ask!! My mom went to a religious wedding and in the program it said that it is supposed to be free of precious stones. I was upset because I did want a wedding band to go with my e-ring... but I was thinking of getting a plain one for the ceremony and bring out the rocks for the reception....

Re: Jewish Brides

We are also doing our wedding kosher style with several glatt kosher meals catered in the same way JannShari mentioned. I am not sure about the cocktail hour other than veggie platters but we haven't got as far to discuss specific details.

Re: Jewish Brides

My FH will be having an auf-ruf on the day before our wedding. We are doing it that weekend instead of the week before because we want family to be in town for it.

Re: Jewish Brides

We are having an of ruff (shabbat chatan). We haven't decided on when to do it. My FH's family is coming in from Israel so we definitely want them there. It is traditional to do it the Sat. before, but we may do it the Sat. before to include his family.

Re: Jewish Brides

Our Auf Ruf is 2 weeks before the wedding also. We are trying to figure out who will be doing the alyahs, and the temple called me yesterday to find out what I want for the kiddish. I was thinking brunch foods- lox, bagels, tuna salad, pastries, etc. I plan on wearing a long velvet skirt set.

I am not getting married in a temple and I have a strapless gown, do I have to cover my shoulders?
