Re: those on low carb diets...

On Atkins you start out at 20 for the first two weeks. Then you gradually add back a little at time each week.

You should get the carbs from whole grain products and vegetables.
Net carbs is total carbs per the label minus the fiber grams.

The south beach diet has limited carbs the first two weeks and then you can add more carbs, but they are specific types. There are some shopping lists in the slim down forum for examples.

There are many LC programs with various carb intake allowances - Carbhydrate addicts diet, protein power, etc.

Re: those on low carb diets...

yes, but if you start to gain weight, then you need to lessen the carb intake

Re: those on low carb diets...

i'm not going on a low-carb diet.
the simplest of things (ie one granola bar) that i just had has 31g of carbs.
it's insane to think of cutting your daily intake down to 20.
i would wither away to nothing.

Re: those on low carb diets...

During the first 2 weeks, no more than 20 grams BUT you are supposed to get those grams from green vegetables. So for example, you cant have one slice of bread...but you can have a few cups of string beans.

Im on this right now and I have not lost 1 ounce in a week. Its the most evil diet ever. Im on it with my borther and husband and they have both lost 10 lbs already!!

Re: those on low carb diets...

Yes, a granola bar full of sugar will have 30 or more grams of carbs, but 1 cup of broccoli has 3.

Yummy meal - a steak, 1 cup of broccoli with melted cheese on top, a side salad with ranch dressing (full fat) - total carbs for the full meal? Around 5 or 6.

I'm not on a low-carb diet, but I have a suggestion for low carb bread.

Natural Oven - Lo Carb (3g of carbs, 5g of fiber)

Stef, maybe it works if you're really heavy (which you're not)...

I remember trying ww last year and only loosing 1.6 lbs in one month... I stopped the diet after that, b/c I got so discouraged. Never mind that I was starving the whole time too.

Re: those on low carb diets...

I would say limit it to 30 (you can still lose that way)..

I hate how fast men lose weight- it's not far.. just proves to me that women are meant to be a little fleshy

I don't think I lost my first two weeks either (or at least, I don't think I lost much - I didn't own a scale) - it really picked up after that, and I have steadily lost weight ever since (averaging 1.5lbs a week)

Re: those on low carb diets...

Low carb diets work, but I believe portion control on ANY diet is key.

I was a lo-carb dieting failure ... I lost 7 lbs the first 3 weeks, but then promptly put them back on once the holidays rolled around. I kinda knew it wasn't the diet for me. I'm Italian -- I love my pasta TOO much.

FH had tremendous success on Atkins, though. He lost 30 pounds in 3 months about a year ago .. but he was working out like crazy, too.

Hey, did anyone hear on the news about the late Dr. Atkins? They are now saying he died of heart disease and high blood pressure problems, and that he was overweight at the time of his death.

The press is jumping on this story... they're having a field day with the thought that the Low Carb Guru diet as a result of his high-fat diet

Re: those on low carb diets...

I could never stay on this diet long term..i just figured i would give it a try to see how it works for 2 weeks. Plus, I really dont like meat that much. Bread, pasta, fruit - give me that and Im happy :D Ive been so disguisted with meat the past few days Ive barely been able to eat anything.

Everyone else i know (and they are not that heavy) has lost major poundage on it.

Im just complaining now b/c im so frustrated with it. My body just likes to be a certain size and its soooo resistant to changing.

Well there have been many studies that showed peoples cardiac profiles improved after being on a reduced carbohydrate diet for a while (triglycerides went down, HDL went up, while LDL dropped (I think that's the way you want it to go, right?? I always forget which is the good cholesterol and which is the bad))

You can make it a bit lower fat, if you like, but fat isn't bad - fat makes you feel full, so you aren't temped to eat as much (I used to be able to graze all day on junk, now 3 meals a day is enough - now and then I have a snack of some cheese or something like that)
