Ok, so I got a new job today, but...help!

it's a long term temp position at a company that I really want to work for, and the job starts next Tues or Wed. I have a job in the city now (full-time) that I called in sick today at to go on this interview. So I have to tell them that I'm leaving, and I'm not really giving any notice, which is kind of rude an unprofessional of me, but it's not like my position is brain surgery- nothing that a temp can't take over in a day or two. I work for two people, one of who is traveling and won't be back in the office until Thurs. Do I call both my bosses and tell them today? Or send an email? Or wait until Thurs when they're both in the office but then it;s like, 'hi, i got a new job and monday's my last day'???? Help!

How long have you been there?
Why would you leave a perm job for a temp job?

Why can't the new company wait for you to give proper notice?

Just tell your current company first thing tomorrow morning. It happens. Be prepared for them to be annoyed about the sort notice.

yeah, seriously?

i am stuck in an awful position and may be let go in the coming months, but i refuse to leave for a temp/contract gig because i will then lose my health insurance!

ETA - AND any unemployment insurance!

I'm leaving the perm job for a temp job b/c I hate commuting 3 hrs/day to NYC!!!! It's just about the lifestyle, really.

Thanks for your advice, girls. I need a b&w cookie.

that's good, at least you have that covered. no health insurance is always my biggest worry...

i totally understand the commuting headache, i would only put up with that if i was paid lots of $$$$ and then only for a short period of time...

Re: Ok, so I got a new job today, but...help!

I would call them and tell them right now. Then, at least, you are giving them a week. I have seen people give less than two weeks at my firm, and really, if the people you work for are nice and understanding, they wont care that much. If they aren't - who cares, you're leaving and never coming back

Re: Ok, so I got a new job today, but...help!

I think any new employer would respect the fact that you don't want to leave your current employer high and dry. It says something about your work ethic and I think the new employer might like to know that should you ever leave them, you'd give proper notice.

Re: Ok, so I got a new job today, but...help!

what about explaining the situation to your current boss - you are having problems with the commute and you have an opportunity with a company but they want you to start on X date, and while you know you need to go to them you want to work out a proper plan allowing for a smooth transition out. Ask her for the date she would like to be your last day and explain that you will try to accommodate. At least your working as a team player and she might agree that your leaving on X date will work.

Re: Ok, so I got a new job today, but...help!

never burn your bridges, you may think yr job is nothing, but it looks unprofessional to just ditch a company & leave them in a lurge. try to give some kind of notice out of courtsey
