Mommies Help! - TMI question!

My MOH just called me to tell me she 'lost her plug' on Wednesday.

The question of the day is:
Does this mean she'll be in labor soon or does this mean she can still go until her due date or beyond? She's not due until the 23rd, and she lost it on the 3rd ...

Thanks mommies!

Re: Mommies Help! - TMI question!

If she *really* lost her plug, it means her baby will be here SOON.

Congrats!!

ETA: I take it back. DOH. I was thinking her water broke... Her baby may not be here so soon! Is she leaking any fluid or having contractions?? If her cervix is still closed, the plug may regenerate itself somewhat. Did she call her doctor.

I beleive, and the mommies on here would know better, but it's the mucus plus that covers the cervix.

Re: Mommies Help! - TMI question!

This may help... I feel like Shamma!!

How soon after my mucus plug passes will labor begin?
Passing a mucus plug is a sign that your cervix is dilating and your body is starting to prepare for birth. Labor could be hours, days, or even weeks away as the cervix gradually opens over time.

What does a mucus plug look like?
A mucus plug may be clear, slightly pink or blood tinged in color. It may be stringy mucus or sticky discharge. Some women may not even notice the loss of their mucus plug because there is already so much vaginal discharge during pregnancy.

When should I call the doctor?
You should call your doctor immediately if your discharge suddenly becomes bright red and the amount is more than an ounce (about two tablespoons). You could be experiencing placenta previa or placental abruption.

Re: Mommies Help! - TMI question!

Actually, I think you can lose the mucous plug a few weeks before you give birth so she may not be having the baby ASAP. However, I think I (damn this is definitely a TMI topic) I saw some of mine with Luke the morning before I went into labor. Eeew! Yes Im a mother and nursing student but....eeewww

ETA: I just read Kathis reply and it makes alot of sense that I lost mine so late. You can be dialated for awhile before you give birth so that would be the women who lose it earlier. I was hardly dialated (less than 1cm) even at my post EDD OB visit and then all of a sudden it happened real quick

That is what she keeps saying! The baby's head is in the birth canal and in position. Last Monday (2/23) she was only 1cm dialated. She's soo ready to go, so I think she is hoping this is a sign that labor may come soon.
I won't even tell her she may have another 3 weeks!
