Thinking of driving to Florida at the end of June. Are we crazy?
JT and I would like to go see my grandparents since my grandfather is not doing well. Neither of us like to fly. And bynot like, I mean, we're PETRIFIED to fly. So we think we may drive it. JT has also never seen any state below NJ, and we thought it might be fun to just take off and go. We're going to the Tampa area. Anyone know how long it would take us about? I'm sure we will end up driving. Thanks for any input.

I think it sounds like a fun trip! Think of all the cool places you could stop along the way! Delware Gap, DC, Georgetown, Furniture outlets in NC, Busch Gardens, etc....

Re: Thinking of driving to Florida at the end of June. Are we crazy?
Sounds like a great trip to me!' Years ago I took a trip from Maine to Tampa and driving time was 24 hours if we were to drive straight. We ended up stopping in NC for a night.
Do it! You'll have a GREAT time!!!

Re: Thinking of driving to Florida at the end of June. Are we crazy?
Me and FI did that 2 years ago and it was rough but so worth it. It took about 20 hours. We did it straight through, just stopped for gas and to see South of the Border.

Re: Thinking of driving to Florida at the end of June. Are we crazy?
I think it sounds like a lot of fun. My family used to drive down every year when I was younger...it took us about 2 days to get to Orlando since we stopped overnight in North Carolina...I say go for it!!

Re: Thinking of driving to Florida at the end of June. Are we crazy?
I love to drive. So Im bias
I say go for it. You can stop in Philly, DC, Charlotte (sp), Atlanta.. I love sight seeing! June is dryer on this coast (usually, though last year was bad) and it's really a pretty drive.
When I drove from TX to NYC we went north from Atlanta on I-95. It was a really smooth ride.
We got post cards from every state we went through and stopped at least twice a day to let the car cool and for us to stretch our legs over food or shopping. We even looked up the towns we were going to drive through to see if they had any outdoor fairs.
I love to fly but sometimes it's nice to slow down and see stuff by driving.
You're not crazy.

Re: Thinking of driving to Florida at the end of June. Are we crazy?
We just did this exact trip it took us about 22 hours. FI and I work together and we had to drive a show vehicle down there for an event. Since we were there already we took a few vacation days and visited family. We had a great time on the trip but we both really enjoy road trips. Definitely not for everyone though.

Re: Thinking of driving to Florida at the end of June. Are we crazy?
my DH insists that this is how he KNEW he wanted to marry me...because we had a successful road trip.....sitting in a car for hours on end can be stressful..you want a good partner in crime!
We stopped at truck stops and for fireworks....we had a blast even though I slept most of the ride home!

Re: Thinking of driving to Florida at the end of June. Are we crazy?
I've heard anywhere form 18-24 hours. FH used to do it with his fmaily every year and he loved it. You couldn't pay me enough. But it might be fun if you take the time and stop places and make the trip aprt f your vcation. Me? I'd go stir crazy! I get impatient on the last half hour of the flight to orlando.

Re: Thinking of driving to Florida at the end of June. Are we crazy?
It is a fun trip. My DH and I just did it in April. My parents live in Northern Florida and it took us only 15 1/2 hours to get home. We drove straight through. Only stopping for bathroom and gas.

Re: Thinking of driving to Florida at the end of June. Are we crazy?
We have done this a bunch of times, too. Also to the Tampa area, it takes about 21 hours. We always leave at night between 10pm and 12am to miss all the traffic in NY, NJ, and Washington. Leaving at night makes a HUGE difference.
We usually drive straight through there and stop at a few hotels on the way back.
