So I talked to my parents yesterday....and I'm a little upset

I asked my stepmom if they would come down for the holidays because I don't know if we can afford/have time from work to go up to NY....and she said 'You don't leave your home for the holidays'

She doesn't want to leave the other kids (that are adults now) behind.....

so I guess we either find a way to go up or we spend the holidays with DH sister and her family.....

And I know I should be excited since it's my first Holidays as a married woman, but I'm gonna miss my family.

My parents live in NJ so I don't see them every holiday either. I just try to make the most of spending the day w/ the in-laws.

DH and I had such a quite enjoyable christmas by ourselves one year. We cooked a little turkey breast, had so spiked egg nog, and rented some movies. It is what you make of it.

That's weird.
People leave their homes for the holidays ALL the time. Doesn't she ever see the news when there is a snowstorm & people are on line in the airport trying to get totheirrelatives homes for Christmas!

My mom never left because it is just our immediate family here and we always lived home until a few years ago and we still go to her house. My sister always comes home and they force her to take money because it gets expensive flying back and forth all the time. At least you have DH with you!

She's hispanic and I think it's her culture/the way she *thinks* things should be done.....I'm sure my dad would do differently...he hates the cold and would love a mild winter!

I know it's hard, I won't make it home for the holidays either this year (well, we will be there for Thanksgiving, but not for Christmas)

What about Thanksgiving? Would they come down for that?

I don't know didianita.....I think it's more she doesn't want to leave HER sons behind and alone....(me and my sis belong to my dad) which I see is unfair because we'll all be all over the place at one point (if her sons EVER leave the nest)...so I guess to her it's ok that I'm not with my dad because I'm married now

What about if your dad and step mom spend it seperately - He comes down to see you and she stays with her sons.

Sorry you have to deal with this. I think you have to let your dad know how much this means to you.

Also if you had to could you and DH travel a few days before and have an 'early' Thanksgiving with them?
We used to do that when my DH worked the holidays - his family made up their own so he could be included

Thanks for the suggestions....he might come down on his own, but I doubt it. DH is in reatil and I don't think he could take that time off during that time of year.....it's such a long haul to drive it, and we have the dog. But maybe his sister would watch her.....and we don't have the $$ to fly right now, but maybe by then we will....

my mom and stepfather always spend the holidays seperated because he goes to boston to see his daughters and my mom stays here with us. i think that if your sister comes to spend the holidays with you he should come also at least for one of them. maybe if he is firm she will reconsider and come along as well
