Re: I have a Brit sitting next to me today and I suddenly hate

My husband is English and his accent is very strong and gets stronger when he is around other English. When we first started dating I was so in love with the way he spoke. However, he was crazy about my American accent. It was different for him. His friends liked to hear me speak when I go over. His young cousin would stare at me while I spoke. Weird, I hate my accent.

Re: I have a Brit sitting next to me today and I suddenly hate

OMG, spend a few months in the UK and listen to some of the northern accents!!! We think the deep south is bad! You can hardly understand a word these people say and it sounds so terrible!!!! It makes me very, very proud to have an American accent!

After a while I didn't even notice DH's accent anymore, now it's just his voice. Although I do like to make fun of him ever now and again just to keep him in his place!

When DH & I argue I kind of imitate his accent in a slightly mocking tone. All in good fun, he does it to me too.
'is it really rubbish, Daniel, is it?'

We are in the process of getting estimates on work to be done to our house and one of the salesmen that came in was a Brit. He had a very thick Cockney (forgive me, I do not know the proper spelling) accent. Some things were just so hard to understand. We asked him to repeat himself several times and then realized he was mispronouncing water spout. The guy was good about it though.

That's because they don't have spouts, they have taps

At our wedding, DH didn't understand what the deacon had said when he said Take and wear this ring...he asked him once, Deacon repeated, but he still didn't get it. DH didn't feel that he could ask again, so he just said what he thought he heard, which came out really fast as one word - takinware! We still tease him about it. I guess it works both ways!!!

DH likes when I imitate him, because I can manage the accent. He tries to do an American one and it's just awful!!!!!

the other day I was in the supermarket and this woman had two little kids in her cart and they wanted candy they kept saying 'Mummy, pleeeeeeaaaaase! Mummy!' and then they were chanting 'Sweet-ties, sweet-ties, sweet-ties, sweet-ties' I did my impression of them when I got home and had DH rolling!!

Re: I have a Brit sitting next to me today and I suddenly hate

I LOVE and English accent (or Irish, Welsh, Scottish). I especially love little kids talking like that - it is soooo cute to me. I told DH is we ever had children, we'd have to move over there for thier formative years so they would get an accent like that!!

DH's family finds it funnier when I imitate the accent than DH does. He pretends to be bored and calls me a plonker.

Oh, my mom was from Scotland. She passed away when I was 8. When I entered school they sent me to speech lessons because I said 'One, two, tree' with the accent... I guess Plainview wasn't exactly immigrant central in 1976 and they never thought 'Maybe the kid said tree instead of three because her Mom's from Glasgow'. Yes, this is a true story...

Same here in Ireland, sometimes the taxi drivers will talk to us and we have no idea what they are saying!
