ATTN: Winter Brides!!! SHAWLS for BM dresses are so expensive! What are you doing?

I found the PERFECT BM dress for my girls under $150 but since I am having a winter wedding I figured the girls need to wear a shawl also...but the store said that it will cost $50 each which brings the price up to $200 before alterations!!!!!! I don't know what to do!?!?!
Honestly, do the girls NEED shawls? I heard they aren't very warm anyways!

What do you think?????????
What are some alternatives?????????

Please help!

Re: ATTN: Winter Brides!!! SHAWLS for BM dresses are so expensive! What are you doing?

I would go to a department store and see if you can find something nice that matches the dresses. It might be hard to find an exact color match, but you can choose silver, which would match the trim on their dresses. Possibly even white or black, esp. if the girls are wearing shoes in those colors.

You can probably find something less expensive at a department store. The bridal stores tend to mark up a lot of accessories, and I hear this is where they get a good chunk of their profits.

I know a few girls who bought pashminas for their BM's from the street vendors all over the city. They are $5 each now!

Re: ATTN: Winter Brides!!! SHAWLS for BM dresses are so expensive! What are you doing?

Here is a suggestion that may save you some money. When you order your BM dresses, order a few extra yards of PLAIN fabric from the same dyelot and find someone you know with a sewing machine who may be able to make them (the shawls) for you.

My ladies have to have their shoulders covered in Temple regardless of weather. They are each wearing different Bill Levkoff 2 piece sets. Not all of them are wearing strapless but one is. If one is wearing strapless, then they ALL need to wear shawls - at least walking down the aisle. They all agree so they know they will be asked to buy shawls with their dresses. I think Bill Levkoff will make the shawls for them.

I planned on ordering about a yard or two of extra fabric anyway. My flower girls are wearing white or off white (but not ivory) dresses. I am having my sister make little belts/sashes from the extra fabric so they can be tied in to match the rest of the BP. I like when FG's wear white, but the little hint of color in the belt is nice.

thanks girls!

Yeah I guess I should shop around for other ideas instead...I would like to look in the city.

I think I will have the girls just order the dresses and we will could spend the next few months looking for something to wear with it.

I don't think they have that specific color. but if you have a swatch of the red dress, it could match their version of red, which is called 'apple'.

Re: ATTN: Winter Brides!!! SHAWLS for BM dresses are so expensive! What are you doing?

I have to say, the shawl of the dress fabric sounds nice, but it does not keep you warm! I was in a wedding in November and the MOB bought all the girls in the weddingparty black fleece shawls from walmart. They wer so big and warm I ended up sharing mine with my mom between photo shoots. The limo driver took them all from us when we entered the church and had the ready for us whenever we had to go outside. The limo driver also held them for us whenever we had to take them off forpics! Trust me, they were FANTSTIC!!!!

Re: ATTN: Winter Brides!!! SHAWLS for BM dresses are so expensive! What are you doing?

I'm not even worrying about it at all. Are you doing pictures outside in January? We're not planning on doing any in Feb. The girls can wear their winter coats, or buy their own covering of some sort. Or else they can just go quickly from place to place!

Re: ATTN: Winter Brides!!! SHAWLS for BM dresses are so expensive! What are you doing?

Honestly I wanted to try some pics outside....like in front of the church. Also, the church is near a harbor...so if it isn't TOO bad I was considering quickly taking a couple of pics outside.
So, I think fleece blankets and pashminas or shawls might be a good idea...

Re: ATTN: Winter Brides!!! SHAWLS for BM dresses are so expensive! What are you doing?

I wouldn't stress it...really.. how long are they outside forr anyway. If you take a few quick pictures outside they can suck it up for their friend. I would!

Re: ATTN: Winter Brides!!! SHAWLS for BM dresses are so expensive! What are you doing?

Hmmm...that is a tough one if you want to do some pics outside! The pashminas are probably a good idea, and I bet you could get something really pretty at, say, Lord and Taylor. I do think the 'suck it up' advice is pretty solid though, too!

Re: ATTN: Winter Brides!!! SHAWLS for BM dresses are so expensive! What are you doing?

I agree!

So, if the girls are wearing red, and their flowers are pink, red, and white, do you think a white pashmina will look good with the pic of the red dress above????????

Re: ATTN: Winter Brides!!! SHAWLS for BM dresses are so expensive! What are you doing?

how about a shrug? My sis and/or FMIL will be making them for my girls and even though they're smaller, i think that would be warmer than a shawl and definetly more 'fashonable.'

Why not let the girls pick out the shawls themselves, you just tell them what color you want it to be. That way they can find one in their price range.

What is a shrug? (sorry)

Ember: I would rather the girls have matching shawls...I think that will look better in pictures.

Re: ATTN: Winter Brides!!! SHAWLS for BM dresses are so expensive! What are you doing?

Thats cool. I was just an idea. I couldn't fathom shawls being difficult to make. Maybe find some fabric and ask someone in your family to sew it? I'm sure there has to be a grandmother, aunt, mother, mother-in-law to be, etc... who would love to help out.
