NWR: apt hunting in manhattan???
FH and I are currently looking for an apartment... we're going to be working long hours so we're limited to Manhattan, which is super overpriced. We're trying to avoid a broker if we can... any advice????

what neighborhood?
I avoided a brooker by walking around and talking to magement companies
I moved to Plaza East on 34th between 1st and 2nd- the always have a sign outside- you can just go in and talk to the manager-
also - this only works for doorman buildings- but go in a ask the doorman if there are any openings- I did that also
FM if you need more help

Re: NWR: apt hunting in manhattan???
There are a lot of buildings that have a sign somewhere on them with a phone number. I just walked around the neighborhood i was interested in and called the numbers. Also the sunday times is a great place to look and there will be listings for no fee apartments.
Hope that helps

look on Craigs list. You can search non-broker fee listings.

If you are interested in Gramercy/East Village, check outStuyvesant Town
They have LARGE 1-BR there from $2200-$2500. Just go to the leasing office and wait for the next agent to show you the model - no brokers fee! FH and I live there and LOVE it! FM me with any questions

Re: NWR: apt hunting in manhattan???
We also found our apt by going to management companies. We found out about a lot of them by walking around the areas we wanted to live and looking at the signs posted on the building or asking doorman. We used Bettina Equities (they have a website), which has many buildings on the Upper East Side and are pretty reasonably priced. There were 3 we were deciding between and chose a 1-bedroom corner apt (2 windows in living room) with brand new kitchen in elevator building with laundry. It has lots of character (LR is elevated) and everyone tells us it is big for a NYC apt. We pay about $1900.

Re: NWR: apt hunting in manhattan???
When I lived in manhattan I found my apt by looking through the Times but you were often competing with a zillion people for a place but we avoided going through someone that way. I LOVED my apt on the upper west side
