Just got back from first makeup trial - it's not a hit with FH

So I felt really good about my first makeup trial, but when I got home FH's reaction was not so good. I wear makeup on a regular basis, so I told the makeup artist that I am not looking for a 'natural' look, but rather something that plays up my features.

Well..when I walked in the door I was very happy, but my smile soon turned to a frown when I saw FH's reaction. He really hates it! He's like, 'I like you better with no makeup' (ugh!), and 'you look like you're an older woman trying to cover up something'. GREAT!

I don't have pics yet, but I will post when she sends them to me.

Now I'm paranoid and I want to have some trials with other artists...
...are there any makeup artists based out of NYC that you girls would recommend?? Oksana is already booked for my day, and I would rather not have to pay an LI vendor to travel to NY, so if you know of anyone in NY...

I know....I just want him to find me amazingly attractive on our wedding day...and that definitely was not the look I got from him tonight...he looked at me like I was a freak!!

I will post pics asap - the artist said she will email them to me by tomorrow night.

I agree with Dina above.

He's not used to seeing you and men can't handle change.

Now that I know what you look like in person, once you post the pics form your trial, I'll give my honest opinion.

In the meantime, it doesn't hurt to go to other trials to compare.

I suggest going to the MAC counter at Saks - they're so talented, and their MU is fantastic! I also suggest checking out Sephora!

You can do both on your lunchtime or right after work, and they're right in your area, so tit's convenient.

I know MAC at Saks charges either $40 or you have to buy 4 products or more totaling $40 or more - well worth it.

I believe (don't quote me on this) that Sephora is free or $35 for a makeover.

my Fiance had the same reaction when I came home from my trial. I decided to buy great make up and have my sister-in-law and friend help me with my make up, it will look nicer and save me money.

don't worry you will find someone you love. unfortunately I don't know any other make up artists besides Oksana and a few on LI

I'm so sorry you didn't get the good reaction you wanted from your FH. I totally know what you mean about wanting to knock his socks off on your wedding day. Don't get discouraged. I have had two make-up trials so far, and I wasn't happy with either one of them! Keep trying and you will find somebody

OK...I know exactly how you feel. When my DH saw me after my 1st makeup trial his face dropped and he said that I looked...ready for this???? slut t y!!! Nice right??

I went back to the same makeup artist because I knew that she was good....but I gave her a few suggestions and she nailed it the 2nd time around.
The colors she used were more 'me'..which she didn't know the 1st time around because I went in there with no makeup on.

Don't feel bad!! Men generally just don't like a lot of makeup.
If you can, go for another trial. I didn't want to spend the money, but it gave me peace of mind.

I don't know if your FI is like mine, but he's...well a metrosexual. He never lets me walk out wrinkled and always tells me when my lip color doesn't work. Embarassing at times but highly appreciated.

With that in mind, although I haven't found my MU artist, there are a ton in NYC. FM me if you want the list of people that I'm looking into. But the previous advice is good...work with the artists to find the colors that work best for you. A lot of people go to the trial and only try one look. Esp if you pay for the trial (a concept I think ridiculous), use as much time as possible to figure out what the best look is...not just one or two applications.

What's your budget by the way?

ETA: Do want YOU like. Even if your FI isn't crazy about a trial - no matter what, you will be the most beautiful thing he has ever seen the day of......

My husband had the same reaction when he saw me after one of my trials. He looked at me like I was an alien. Of course, glamorous make-up looks a bit much when you are wearing your hair in a pony tail and have jeans on, etc. I think it is a different experience when you have your gown on, your hair done, a veil etc. If you like it, trust me, he will like it on the big day. And you can always tell the make-up artist to tone it down a bit for the wedding.

My FI hated the way I looked after the trial (I didn't like the make-up either). I went to the clinique counter this past weekend (FYI, it's clinique bonus time at bloomingdales) and the woman spent about 2 hours with me (and my MOH). I loved what she did and the clinique makeup felt so much better on my face than the brand my make-up artist used. The best part was my FI really liked it too. I suggest you go to make-up counters and experiment with a bunch of colors. Go with a friend or your FI to get a second opinion. Don't stress about it. You'll find a look that both you and your FI like.

I agree. And she'll probably do another trial with you for free if you wanted her to do a more natural look. She did my makeup very natural, and it brought out all my features. I got raves from my family and FH. Once you see your pics, you'll see how you really look.

I'm so sorry about your fh's reaction...I can totally relate. My fh would be psyched if I showed up with my hair up in a clip and some mascara. I have tried to explain several times that this is a formal occasion and that for pics and the whole, dress-hair--jewelry thing going on on a wedding day, the make-up is more 'formal' than, say, oh I don't know....going to work!

Many boys don't get this. The good thing is, he clearly thinks your beautiful just the way you are!!!

However, go with your own instincts and likes on the hair and makeup for your wedding day

MY DH was always on my case about how he didnt want me to wear much makeup esp cuz hes not used to seeing me with alot of it on, the day of he loved how my makeup came out though..I think on the day of when you have your hair done, your dress on, your FH will love how you look! Maureen is one of the most talented makeup artists IMO, Im sure you looked beautiful..He probably just needs to see the whole package!

Also you dont want to go too natural because in the pics your makeup wont really show up.

ETA if you do want to try another makeup artist I highly recommend Denise from Angel Eyes-liw vendor. I used her and loved her!

I know how you feel- I had a makeup trial with a vendor on here and allthough I was kinda mixed about it as soon as DH saw me - his face turned sour and he said it looks really bad! So I went for another trial to someone my b/f and hairstylist used for their weddings and wallah- what a difference- I was happy and when I came home DH attacked me!!!!! so since that is the reaction I want when he sees me with makeup in my wedding gown I went with the trial HE loved!!!! ( I loved it and my mom as well )

I definitely agree with the other ladies that most men don't take to 'change' very well. Just think of it this way - he thinks your beautiful just the way you are!

He'll get used to the idea that you need to wear makeup for your wedding day! Boys, they can be so silly sometimes...

Try Janet Bari Makeup. She has a website do a google and she is the house makeup artist for Russo's on the bay. She is really good and works in NY frequently.
