I teach sixth grade at an elementary school in Newburgh(Orange County). I live about an hour from NYC.Although, I'm trying to get a postion on the Island. Do you have your Masters? If so, what did you get it in? I am undecided, and need some ideas! And I'm not sure what colleges offer what. I graduated from New Paltz (after switching my major). My finance lives in Suffolk County, so I would like to find something close by. Again, congrats-it must be a great feeling!

Hi Heather,
I know where Newburgh is! I have family living there. : ) Small world! I will be getting my master's on May 18th, but I finished my classes last week. It feels geat to be done!! I got my master's in liberal arts from SUNY Stony Brook ~ cheap!! I was originally interested in the education of the gifted child masters at CW Post, but it was a bit on the expensive side. If you are interested in that, I hear it's a great program!
I heard back from my friend who used JoVon. She was thrilled with her proofs, and felt that he was very unobtrusive, but her guests felt otherwise. He was like crowd control, constantly pushing people away on the dance floor to move them out of his shots. I don't feel comfortable saying these things about him in a public forum (it's just not nice!!), so if you'd like, email me, and I'll give you his name. (JayCee426@aol.com)
Good luck finding a teaching position on LI! It took me 2 years, so don't give up! : )

Ladies,
Not to sound stupid, but how do you go about obtaining a teaching position with out your Masters? I have a BA from Fordham University and would love to get into the education field.

Michelle,
In order to teach in a NY public school, you must have at least your BA in education, and pass two of the three written exams ( there are three written exams in all, and a video of your teaching). You may however be able to teach in private school, but I'm not sure. You can go back for your MA in education, but you must student teach, and pass all of the exams. Let me know if you need more info. Good luck!

Ditto to what Heather said, except that you can DEFINITELY get a job in a private/parochial school without an education degree.

You may be able to get something on the secondary level, they are always looking for Spanish teachers. If not, you could get your MA in education. If it's your dream, don't give up. I switched my major in my Jr. year of college, and I don't regret it one bit!Good luck.
