My mother did once and she looked TRASHY! They turned out nearly white. I think you're better off with the at home kits. I helped her with an at home kit once...Feria maybe? It had a wand thing to do the highlights.

Damn ...

And because my hair is so dark, the home kits end up just like orange stripes in my hair

Is trashy a bad way to start the new job?

If you leave the bleach on longer, would it turn more blonde? That was just one Lemon Tree, so it might not be all!

My aunt gets her hair colored at the Lemon tree & she looks good. She was surprised.

There is a highlighting kit for brunettes. . I think it is by Feria, called "Chestnut Changes" & it didn't make my hair orange. It makes med/light brown streaks in my dark brown hair.

I don't know where you live, but I would recommend Alan his salon is called Butterfly Garden. It is in Smithtown on Terry Rd. here is his number - 584-5388.

He is really reasonable and does a fab, fab job.

Re: How bad will it be to go to a Lemon Tree kinda place ...

the only reason i dont like going to those types of places is that i always seem to wind up paying a little less then i would in a regular salon. they always charge extra for the length of my hair and thickness of my hair.

I know there is a school...I think in Hauppaugue (sp?) where Okey Dokey's used to be by Rt 111....my friend went there when she was training to be a hairdresser. The students work on you...but there is a supervisor always around. They are really cheap...I don't know if you need an appointment.

Re: How bad will it be to go to a Lemon Tree kinda place ...

oh gosh dont do it, i went to a lemon tree type place and half my highlites were orange and some were white it was not good lol.. i then went to a professional and she did a fabulous job but for me the up keep is ridiculously expensive, so i bought an at home kit.. i use frost and glo or something like that its by revlon, i got the package for dark hair'd girls..and i keep it on for 45 minutes it comes out perfectly blonde!!!! if the at home dyes r leaving u orange that means it did not stay on long enough to thoroughly process... i have learned the details cause i have done it so many times, when left on past 45 mins the hair is whitish... fm me if u want more details :)

ETA: here is a pic of me and my hair, i look dumb so ignore that but as u can see the highlites have grown out a bit, i have very dark hair naturally but that blonde color is from the box, not bad if i do say so myself lol... i glop it on too and its sucha pain, use the inbox cap..and get someone to pull the hair threw it for you, i recruited my mom lol

Well, other than the ORANGE, I'm just really bad at placement ... I get bored during the process and end up just glopping it on!

I definitely need someone to do it for me!

Re: How bad will it be to go to a Lemon Tree kinda place ...

My mom does mine and it comes out awesome. Clairol frost and tip. It is like $15 for the kist and as long as you have someone to pull it through the cap, it never has failed me. I always get compliments and when I tell them it costs $15 they are in shock!

Re: How bad will it be to go to a Lemon Tree kinda place ...

To be totally honest, when it comes to coloring your hair, I would pay the extra $ b/c you really do get what you pay for...a bad haircut can be fixed, but bad coloring can damage your hair AND look awful - much harder to fix. I am the first one to save $ where I can, but I will splurge on highlights b/c I trust my hairdresser who has a good reputation; although it is a bit expensive/

Re: How bad will it be to go to a Lemon Tree kinda place ...

I just save my money and don't even bother getting my hair colored .. seems like one hassle & expense I certainly don't need in my life.

With that in mind, I obviously have no idea where to go or not go .. or what's expensive or not.

But I do think sometimes you can find gems in unlikely places .. there was a lady at a JC Penney salon who did a wonderful job cutting my hair for years .. then once while out of town, I was desparate for a trim .. and tried another JC Penney salon .. and had great success there, too.
