Anyone go back to school to become a TEACHER after working in a corporate environment?
I have a masters degree in Finance and have been working for 8 years, and I often think about becoming a teacher. Ideally I would like to teach high school math on Long Island.Anyone else do something like this? How hard was it to go back to school for teaching? I worked full time and got my masters degree part time at night, so I've done the work/school thing. I'm good at what I do, and I like where I'm at, but I always wonder what the future holds for me. I always come back to teaching...
Any advice??

i did it, but not at the same time... i was working in the city and then got laid off... they started paying me to do freelance graphic design, so that was the perfect opportunity for me to go back to school to be an art teacher... best thing i ever did!!

Sometimes I think I have to wait for fate to step in, like in your case. But other times I think I should just jump in with both feet and get things moving on my own...But then the rent is due, car payment, credit cards, etc.... And reality sets in and I realize I need my paycheck too much and I can't afford to take even a temporary cut in pay!

you can at least look into it and find out exactly what you need to do to get certified... and that way maybe you can start working on it slowly one class at a time! I am a strong believer in everything happens for a reason, and what is meant to be will be and when one door closes an other opens, however, i also believe that sometimes you need to give fate a little nudge to make your life what you want it to be!

Re: Anyone go back to school to become a TEACHER after working in a corporate environment?
That is exactly what I did...I worked in business for 10 years as a legal secy & admin (ABC/Major League Baseball) & I loved it but felt something was missing. I went back to school at night & got my Masters in Early Childhood Ed. I've been teaching the last 4 years & absolutely LOVE it.However, in my area the island is FLOODED w/ teachers so I've been unable to find a job in public school & took a HUGE paycut to teach in Catholic school, but to me its worth it. I go home feeling so fulfilled (most days!!!)
I say, go for it. I know they are in need of math/science teachers especially.
fm me if you have any q's.

I did as well! I worked in Media for about 3 years. I left just before 9/11. It was the best decision that I ever made...but its hard to find a teaching job.

I worked in the corporate environment for 4 years and then began teaching math. It took me two years to get my education master's while working full time. I can honestly say that it was extremely taxing on me, but everyday I drive to work I am so happy I made the switch.p.s. - It is not hard at all to find a secondary math position on long island. I had four offers by march of last year for this past september.
Go for it !! Stop waiting for things to happen and make them happen yourself!!

Thanks for all your responses. I actually looked into Hofstra and Dowling for teaching before I even finished my Masters degree for Finance. Even then I wasn't sure if I should make the big jump. But everyone I talk to, including all of you, say how it was the best decision they ever made.
I guess I know what I want to do, I just need that defining moment to give me that extra push!
Thanks again!

That's what I wanted to hear!! I don't want to make the change and then find out that there aren't any positions open...or the market is saturated with math teachers looking for jobs!
As we all know, things change when we get married. We have another person to consider. I now want to do what's best for US, not just me. And if I do this, I want to do it before we have kids!

I did this. I worked in radio for about 3 years and did my masters while I worked full time. This is now my second year of being a teacher. I loved radio and I miss it but I love being a teacher. It is an entirely different life that I have now. FM me if there is anything else you want to know. I would be more than happy to share my experiences with you.

Re: Anyone go back to school to become a TEACHER after working in a corporate environment?
Did you ever hear of the NYC Teaching Fellows? It is a program that looks for people (who don't have any education experience) to teach in hard to staff (ie: inner city) schools. In exchange for doing this the program pays for a majority of your master's degree. Some of the high needs areas are Special Education, Bilingual education, math, and science.
I was accepted into the program in 2003 and have been teaching Special Ed since 2004. I have to say its a hard job. You are basically thrown into a situation that you are not prepared for. But, it is also very rewarding. More often than not I am glad I made the decision to teach.
Good Luck with your decision!!
