my grandpa--really bad news--smokers please read UPDATED--he's in heaven now

here we go again.

i put my beloved cat abu to sleep last week and just started getting over the hurt.

on the way home from work today i got a frantic call from my aunt telling me to get to the hospital immediately but she wouldn't say why. but i knew.

my grandpa has stage 4 lung cancer and emphysema. he is dying. it may be hours, it may be days, but all i know is it is the most painful thing i've ever gone through. i'm going to work tomorrow but i don't know how i'll make it through. his sister died on thanksgiving, my cat died 2 weeks later and now this.

my grandpa smoked for 40 years. he quit 20 years ago but the damage is done. even with seeing my grandpa the way he is, MY FATHER AND SISTER CONTINUE TO SMOKE!!! and my grandfather even had a big heart to heart with my sister about it and she promised to quit.

here's my public service announcement for the day:

smokers---please quit. if not for yourselves, do it for your family. do it for your kids and grandkids who aren't here yet. please. my grandpa regrets ever lighting up in the first place. those freaking cigarettes are stealing away the most important person in my life. they're just not worth it. watching him suffer over this past year is just awful, and seeing him today was traumatizing. please, please please, try to quit. not for me...for you and your loved ones. they'll thank you for it.

i'm sure i'll be updating this with the really bad news any day now.

ETA: I just got the call that my grandpa just died. he lost his breath and is gone. i don't know what i'm going to do.

i completely agree about the whole smoking thing... my grandfather smoked for years and died of lung cancer, too... i felt exactly the same way- it was heartbreaking and really makes you think about things.

So sorry to hear about your grandpa. I know exactly how you feel because I'm going through the same thing with my grandma. She too quit smoking like 30 years ago (she's 87) and was just diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. I am so close to my grandma and I don't even know how I'm going to handle her passing away. Let's just pray that your grandpa and my grandma don't suffer too much.

uh, sweetie, I am so sorry you are going thru this, I will say many prayers for your grandpa nd for you.

I also was extremeley close to my grandpa, I love him for then anything in the whole world, he passed away from cancer 8 years ago( he never smoked a day in his life) so I know what you are going thru, its hard to watch some one you love so much go thru so much pain.

I am so sorry you are going through this. My grandmother dies of lung cancer even though she had quit years before also.

My mother continues to smoke even though I have asked her repeatedly to quit. I know one day it will get the best of her, but I just deal with it for now.

My prayers go out to you and your family in this horrible time.

And I'm so sorry to hear about your cat. I know how you feel... this September, within a few weeks, we found out my Grandpa had Lou Gherig's disease, and we had to put our dog down... I know how you feel. It was like a double punch in the gut. FM me if you need to talk or anything.

and I hear your message, so loud and so clear... but I'm not a smoker. I wish more smokers would take these things to heart... no nicotine high is worth that.

I am so sorry. Both of my parents are smokers and my grandfather died of cancer in October. I used to smoke, for over ten years, and have quit for over a year now so I know it can be done. You are in my prayers.

I am so sorry to hear what you are going through. I lost my grandfather from lung cancer a year ago and i know how devestating it can be.

So sorry for your loss. Lung cancer is SO tough and I hate smoking so much. My FFIL died this year from lung cancer. It is the MOST preventable kind of cancer and the most lethal, yet people continue to smoke. My FH was a smoker and quit before his father was diagnosed but it is still a risk we will always live with.

I am SO sorry for your loss and I wish you peace through the holidays.
