NWR: Venting about comments about the strike
I am soo pissed off right now with some of you brides making comments about the strike that you know nothing about, only what you hear on the news or read in the papers. Especially about fine all of them because they're azz'z or they should get fired and go on welfare. It's really disgusting what comes out of some peoples mouth. My FH works for transit and he is losing 2days pay everyday because of the union president and his executive board who make at least $90,000 a yaer voting to strike and the 33,000 MTA workers who are affected by it. When this is all over the workers and their families are the ones who will be hurt by this. Sure peolple have a hard time getting to work but you know what at least you're getting there, until this is over FH can't work!
That's all that I have to say.

I think alot of people just dont know the facts. I know what you mean, my SIL is so stressed. Shes not even working now cuz shes doing grad school f/t so they really depend on her husbands income.Everyone assumes because the MTA is on strike, all the employees are in favor of it, which isnt true.

Don't get upset... You shouldn't listen to anyone... Everyone has different opinions... and that's why sometimes these threads get a little out of hand... Just stay cool, and good luck to you and your FH...

Re: NWR: Venting about comments about the strike
People are frustrated about the city basically being shut down. I think everyone understands the plight of you and your FH.I don't think anyone actually blames the indvidual workers, more like you said the union president and the executives.
I for one feel for the workers who have no choice in the matter, although I did read an article that there were workers who decided to cross the picket line. I know that is really hard to do, no one wants the pi$$ the union off. Its a really hard situation for everyone, and like Bloomberg said, no one is a winner here.

Re: NWR: Venting about comments about the strike
I hear what you guys are all saying and every person has a valid point-my company is making it mandatory to come in which means to me that I am losing money and time on the commute-I am putting myself in danger by waiting for some sort of transportation to get into the city-only to be stuck here-and I am sicker than sick and can't stay home.
The strike is frustrating for everyone involved-does it really need to be debated all day long?

Re: NWR: Venting about comments about the strike
i think the majority if not all are mad at toussant (spelling
) and the higher ups for calling the strike, not the workers who want to work.. i have said myself there are many workers who dont want to strike which makes this situation even MORE ridiculous because then what is the strike really fighting for if many of the workers dont even want it?? its just a really ridiculous situation that millions of people are suffering from...

well if they all cross the picket line and pi$$ off the union.. what could the union do about it! they are paid by the workers, Unions are just CR@P in my opinion!

Listen, I feel for you and your FH. However, Toussaint is wrong here. The demands that he is making are outrageous. The city has been shut down, people who want to be at work can't be, and people that should be home aren't. I'm sorry, but it's very, very difficult to muster any sympathy. A strike was the worst thing that the Union should have done. The package they were offered was very fair - better than what I get, better than what my husband gets.
I won't be seeing my husband until this nightmare is over. He already works 4-12, so our hours are completely opposite. We were both looking forward to our first ever Christmas together. Now he's on 12 hour tours and all his days off have been canceled. He's in danger every day. One Christmas.

Re: NWR: Venting about comments about the strike
I understand that this is a sensitive issue for everyone. Especially for the people who are and/or related to transit workers. I'm sorry that your husband is losing a lot of money but I also can understand hwy many are really upset that the transit workers striked. My cousin is a doctor at Mt Sinai she also works for visiting docs. She travel all over the city to visit sick people in their homes and to give them medical attention. They are trying with all their power to get to everyone but its not possible. Her patients are getting sicker by the minute nad they lost 2 of their patients already.Again, Im sorry this hits so close to home but I would hope that you can see both sides of the issue. Good Luck!

That is beyond horrible that this strike has cost people their LIVES.

Re: NWR: Venting about comments about the strike
Ditto on the Unions.I don't have a contract, in fact most people don't have contracts with their employers. I'm not guaranteed a pension and only have the option of retiring at 55 if I can provide for myself for the rest of my life based upon my own savings and personal investments. In addition, I'd most likely be laughed at and then fired if I insisted on an 8% raise every year - even if it was only for 3 years, which I believe is their request.
So, in terms of the union's demands - I'm pretty darned annoyed and extremely frustrated.
In terms of the individuals - I wish them luck in getting what they want, but i don't see it turning out in their favor (just my own personal prediction).
I also walked 27 blocks to midtown after taking the PATH train from WTC to 33rd -which itself took over an hour today. So take everything i'm saying with a grain of salt.

Re: NWR: Venting about comments about the strike
I am sorry this is happening to your family. I know how difficult it is. My dad was an air traffic controller in 1981 when they striked. They were subsequently all fired by President Reagan, and they were left with nothing - no jobs. It had a huge impact on our family. We ended up moving from LI up to CT and my parents ended up divorcing. I know how hard it can be and I truely do sympathize.I don't think anyone is directly blaming the individuals, but this strike is effecting everyone. And people are frustrated and pissed, don't take it personal. I don't agree with the TWU and I think there demands are unrealistic, but I do not wish any ill will to your family or other families.
On a side note:
The news said that 800 crossed the line and were given work - cleaning and paperwork. So they can work if they choose.

You're comparing the private sector to the public sector, two very different things. The public sector typically has employment contracts, which provide pensions, raises, etc.
Typically - yes. But that doesn't mean they are required to give such high raises every year, pensions, healthcare, etc. And the TWU way of handling the negotiations by striking is ridiculous.

Thank you for posting this one. 'In my opinion'(which I can't stress that enough) people are just going by what they see, and hear on the news, and their frustrations of stuggling to get to work, and home. I too would be very upset if in that sitution, but they should also learn the facts before just singling out the workers, and making the comments that they are making. Some of them have been very rude, and inconsiderate.
To all of those who are effected by this I'm sorry you have to go through this, and I hope it works out.

Re: NWR: Venting about comments about the strike
Vanessa,Let me explain something to you, no one on here can know what you are going through unless they know someone personally. These brides on here are talking without much knowledge of the real situation. I myself do not know what is going on but I am sure no one wants to be out of work not getting paid.
So my point is SCREW what others say. Look at it and keep going because they are ignorant.

Yes-I understand I'm comparing public vs. private - and that typically they are different worlds. But my point is, regardless, the demands seem to be rather ridiculous to me.
