What does 'subscribe' mean?

What does 'subscribe' mean?

By accident I clicked that box - on top, next to new topic, etc. What does that mean & what did I just subscribe to

I believe it means that everytime someone replies to that certain thread, you get an email alerting you.

When you get that email you can unsubscribe to the thread by clicking on a link in the email.

i think it means that everytime someone responds to that post, you will get an email or something that there is a new response....
